“EL ARBOL”

We cannot recommend El Arbol Strongly enough. Marjolein and Jan are splendid hosts, friendly, engaging and knowledgeable. They are available 24/7 with answers to all questions and gave the best directions to and from our major destinations with detailed expanation!
The place was amazing. The rooms were spotless and enchanting. Bathrooms were top rated and you had views into the jungle from the showers. We felt very safe and greatly enjoyed the fully stocked kitchen. There were fans available and options such as air conditioning and laundry. The mosquito nets definitely saved us as well! The place has everything you could ever need. The rooms are about 2 stories high and sitting on your personal deck you have a great view of the trees and various jungle plants. We often saw butterflies and lizards in the mornings and even saw a couple of monkeys on the property. They also had a ton of information on booking tours and adventures in the area.

We enjoyed a luxurious massage(the best massage either my husband or I had ever had) under the canopy of the jungle, surrounded by the lovely aroma of exotic flowers and sounds of costa rica wildlife. You can also book yoga sessions in the privacy of your own treehouse.
Location-wise, it's very near Manzanillo and about 10 kilometers from Puerto Viejo and Cahuita is not too much further. Beautiful beaches and lots of snorkeling and you can even rent bikes and leave your car at El Arbol. Tons of options for wildlife, beach, sodas, restaurants, and nightlife all within 13 kilometers of El Arbol (We are already dreaming of the endless great seafood/dining options nearby and the wonderful chocolate croissants at Panpay!) El Arbol is Paradise in the jungle! It is really the place to be!

My husband and I just got back from El Arbol, and we LOVED it...and miss it:(

Our hosts Marjolein and Jan were wonderful! They were very warm and friendly, and always around if we needed anything at all! They even invited us over for a poker game one night with there friends, and I won! :) Our "tree house" rental was in the jungle a bit, so we really got the experience the "true jungle", critters and all. If you bugs don't bother you, you can leave your doors and windows open, other wise I would recommend keeping them closed for the most part. Even then you may find a few that sneek in.We had 3 different kinds of monkeys pass by our house almost daily, as well as howler monkeys that woke me up at 4am a few times, but I didn't mind, I loved hearing them. The balcony was also amazing to sit on in the morning or evening, no need for music, as the jungle has it's own music! We were about a 15 min drive from the main town Puerto Viejo, lots of people got around by bikes, but we were definetly glad that we rented a vehicle. It gave us alot more freedom to do as we pleased without worrying about bus scheduals or biking distance. Overall our stay was amazing and I would definetly recommend it! You are just far enough out of town to be remote, but not too far that you have no amenities. I would definetly go back!!

Thanks again for a wonderful stay Marjolein and Jan!

We spent two nights at el Arbol and loved it. Our house was the highest elevated of the two and provided amazing views of the entire property. Beautifully decorated and stocked with everything you need. The deck was clean and well lit at night. The Jacuzzi is fun, but takes time to get going, so if your setting something up, prepare 20 minutes in advance to fill it with hot water. The kitchen is stocked with basics, so if your in town, grab a few more things to cook up. Especially if your use to eating late as things close pretty early. John knows where all the deals are and gives you enough information to travel less like a "tourist" while in Manzanillo. Everyone in Manzanillo is really laid back, chill, and welcoming. The most diverse area of Costa Rica in my opinion. You can get around pretty late and most drivers know where el Arbol is. After a night of fun, your wake-up alarm is a few howler monkeys and weird cricket bugs (forgot their names). There is a path on the side of the property that leads you to a private path. I swear those bugs got louder the father we went down it. Like a nature alarm. lol. Play with the dogs, kayak, bike, or just lounge around the beach. Its all available to you within minutes.

If your into nature, adventure, and a truley unique travel experience, you'll love this place.

Room Tip: I believe it depends on how many our in your group. The property on the right has 1 bedroom, a day b...

We were the first guests to visit “El Arbol”. We didn’t know what to expect, but it exceeded all of our expectations.
El Arbol is situated in the Gandoca Manzanillo wildlife refuge, this is right next to the Carribean Coast. The house we stayed in was beautifully decorated! The owners just finished building it. There is a great kitchen, an amazing bathroom with a big Jacuzzi, a bedroom with a good bed, a living room and last but not least there is a large porch where you can sit and experience the jungle from your hammock.
The house stands on poles, and you really have the idea you live among the trees. Every morning when you wake up you can hear the howler monkeys, and with a bit of luck you can see them through your window. Believe us, this house is complete luxury in the jungle.

There is enough to do. You can visit the national parks, visit the beach, go snorkeling of scubadiving, visit the small town nearby. And you deffo have to eat at el Refugio, a small restaurant near the road that leads to el Arbol. Best food ever!

El Arbol is set a couple kilometers off the main road to Manzanillo, placing it in what seems a world away from civilization, yet still featuring all of the comforts one needs for an enjoyable holiday. I was there with seven other friends and we rented both available houses.

The houses themselves are an architectural pleasure, with many thoughtful details throughout. The main level provides over 180 degrees of nearly uninterrupted view of the surrounding jungle, with a porch to match.

The kitchen provides everything one needs to create full meals at home, which my group of friends and I did numerous times. But for those lazier moments, pizza (and tasty pizza, at that!) can be delivered from nearby Manzanillo.

In the week that my group was there, we saw toucans, capybara, poison dart frogs, howler monkeys and numerous colorful reptiles and insects on the grounds of El Arbol (and thankfully, none of them were in the houses!)

Our group rented bicycles in Manzanillo and used them as our primary transportation during our stay, which proved to be a very pleasurable and peaceful way to get around the area. Manzanillo and its spectacular beach were about 10 minutes away, while the many other beaches and Puerto Viejo were between 15 minutes and an hour from El Arbol by bicycle, all along a mostly flat road with very little traffic.

The grounds and the houses themselves were kept very clean, with maid service every other day. Air conditioning is available, but my group found it unnecessary, as the houses remained quite cool throughout the day.

The hosts John and Marilyn could not have been friendlier or more accommodating. And what else would you expect from people who live on their own little slice of paradise?

We really loved our 2 weeks stay at El Arbol, it was a unique experience that I recommend to anybody who wants to live the jungle with very limited compromises on comfort. We were with our 2 young kids and had plenty of space. Almost everyday, we saw monkeys, very special butterflies and a lot of other species right from our very beautiful and large terrasse. All the house is made from beautiful woods and has a unique architecture. We had a blast taking a jacuzzi with jungle view to clean the sand from our time at the beach.

The hosts are just very nice, helpful and knowledgeable of the region. For example, they borrowed their BBQ so we could grill the fresh seafood we bought during the day.

The only thing is that you have to take your car to go to the each, but this is also an advantage because you are just far enough to garantee total peace.

We will definitely come back here again !
