El Arbol is a gem. If what you are hoping for is a relaxing stay surrounded by the sounds and views of the jungle, then you will find it here. In the first 30mins of our stay, we spied some gorgeous blue morpho butterflies, a gecko and an Agouti! The house is located in Manzanillo, a sleepy beach town with a gorgeous strip of golden sand. We spent many hours on this beach and it took less then 20 mins to walk there from the house. The kitchen is fully equipped to make meals at home, if you so wish, so we stocked up on groceries at El Duende Gourmet Grocery store in Punta Uva (less than a 10mins drive away) and made most of our meals at El Arbol. What I can't stop raving about however, is the bed at El Arbol. I slept as soundly as I do in my own home, and that is a true testament of comfort while travelling. Jan and Marjolein were very welcoming from the very start and we cannot thank them enough for making our trip to Costa Rica so memorable. Thank you both!

Recently got back from a trip in central america and stopped off in Costa Rica. Booked El Arbol before we came after reading some of their reviews. Have to say that the reviews did not do justice to this place - it is so beautiful. Very private and homely houses with views into the jungle. Lots of wildlife to be seen. The owners of the houses are very friendly and helped us decide what to do and see while there. The area itself, to me, was the nicest place to visit in CR. The houses had everything we needed and more. I never felt so relaxed whilst sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine. We were lucky with the weather and thought we might get more rain but it was bright sunshine every day. Beaches were pretty empty and very clean. Got to see howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, humming birds etc etc etc. Fantastic place and would recommend it to anyone thinking about going.

Waking up in our tree house every morning was like waking up in paradise. The sounds of the tropical birds and the dazzling greens surrounding you as you drink your morning coffee stay with you long after you're back in the ¨real world¨. Marilyn and Jan couldn't have been nicer and after spending nearly 2 weeks with them, my partner and I consider them more than gracious hosts, but lifelong friends. If you like your jungle to come with the comforts of home and the best beaches in the world a short walk away, then this is the place for you. El Arbol was pure magic.

From your gracious hosts to the tucked away tree houses....nothing beats the experience of this jungle paradise. You feel as if you have truly escaped to paradise found, when in reality you are only a nice walk to an amazing beach and charming Caribbean village. For those that don't care to venture into town, your tree house has all of the amenities one an ask for! Time will escape while you relax on the deck catching glimpses of colorful birds and butterflies and you will be delighted not to need your ipod as the symphony of jungle sounds surround you in full stereo. You will feel transposed to a luxury jungle paradise that not even Tarzan & Jane could of imagined. Very romantic, great for couples and we enjoyed it so much we returned a month later with family who were just as spellbound! El Arbol is a must!!

My husband, 13 month old and I spent an incredible week April 2012 nestled amongst the jungle wilds at El Arbol. As their photos illustrate, the houses were created with excellent attention to colors, shapes and sightlines – the architecture is a beautiful blend of luxury jungle tree house and well-equipped home base. We cooked multiple meals every day that we enjoyed out on the porch, always in anticipation of the daily monkey parade overhead! We also strolled daily to the nearby Manzanillo beach or further into the refuge to more remote areas for great solitary swims. A hike up the path to the ridge affords a canopy view of monkeys, birds and the ocean – well worth the climb even with a sleeping toddler on your back!

We appreciated our hosts’ incredible hospitality – excellent pre-trip communication, helping assuage safety concerns and assure adequate facilities and adventures with our very mobile 13 month old. Jan and Maroleijn went above and beyond to help us baby proof the space and ensure safety, including a custom built stair cage they had used for their own kids which helped keep our spider monkey from climbing the spiral staircase, a crib equip with mosquito netting for his naps and an extra mattress to sleep with him on the lower level – not really needed because we were well spread out in the kingsize bed upstairs. They provided fantastic recommendations on local beaches, hikes and outings (incl. the Jaguar Rescue Centre which is well work a visit!). Even booked us a local guide for our trio alone (highly recommended with an unpredictable little one). Our guide Omar’s wealth of flora/fauna knowledge – especially culinary and medicinal plants still used by his family, is matched by his political passion and emphasis on ecotourism in a complex economy such as Costa Rica ☺.

Overall, El Arbol is a fantastic stay with great hosts in a brilliant location – very highly recommended!

El Arbol was the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. We absolutely loved staying on the Caribbean side and Manzanillo was one of our favorite spots. Manzanillo is quiet and small, but incredibly picturesque. The jungle house is stunning with every amenity you could ask for. The deck offered perfect views into the jungle. We saw a toucan, spider monkeys, blue morpho butterflies and lightning bugs. We cooked breakfast and dinner at the house just to soak it all in. The jungle is truly alive at night and if it rains it is very loud. I personally don't mind being awakened by howler monkeys! We rented bikes in Manzanillo but truthfully next time we would just walk and take the local bus to explore Puerto Viejo and the other beach towns. The tour with Florentino was awesome (we saw 3 sloths) - but eat a big breakfast and bring snacks. You will need the energy! We did not get to eat at El Refugio since it was closed that week but we heard it was amazing. We are already planning to go back next year and El Arbol is on our list of places to stay. When you want to experience your own private jungle, head to El Arbol. Maybe next time we visit, they will have two hammocks :) Thanks to Marilyn - she was extremely helpful to us.

Room Tip: There are two jungle houses...you can't go wrong with either.

My wife and I stayed at El Arbol in March 2012 to celebrate our 15-year anniversary. All/most of the reviews were very positive, so we felt safe about the choice. While our expectations were high, El Arbol exceeded them!

The house was nestled into the rainforest where we saw spider monkeys every morning! It was amazing. Marilyn and Jan were amazing hosts. Helped us with everything we asked. They have reliable and safe connections on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. We highly recommend taking a guided tour with their contact, Tino. It was a tour we'll remember forever.
Also, Marilyn highly recommended getting a massage in our rooms by Kelly. Wow! We were blown away by her talent.

Just an amazing trip overall.
