Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Established in 1987 in an abandoned cacao farm the botanical garden is a permaculture farm with a mature collection of fruit and spice trees in production and lots of tropical flowers. Corridors of rainforest make it into a fascinating nature park. Visitors will be able to try a fresh fruit drink, taste fruits in season, sample homemade natural chocolate, and learn about medicinals and ethnobotanicals. Finca la Isla is a working farm producing black pepper, fruits, and ornamental plants in commercial quantities. Besides the opportunity to see very rare tropical plants visitors will learn about tropical crops like bananas, black pepper, and nutmeg. The botanical garden is one of the very best places in Costa Rica to see frogs in the wild. Our rainforest will provide the chance to see four different kinds of poison dart frogs, reptiles, toucans and many other birds, sloths, and the marvel of symbiosis and diversity that is the tropical rainforest. Visitors are guaranteed to see the red poison dart frog in the wild.

“Good Tropical taste”

I loved seeing the red posion frog it's all around. If you love nature you sould go, alot of new things you can see there. You are your own guide in the garden and you can wonder around as long as you want but Alan the guy in the reception was great he showed me a red posion frog and when I came back from the tour he gave me taste of the tropical fruit that grows inside the garden that you were in. Olso he showed me and tould me about the cacao process, he's really smart! Loved that I was alone in the garden just wondering around and seeing new things. Alot of cool things there! recomend it for everyone :)

“An interesting visit...”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

An interesting place to visit if in the area and one of the more cost effective "tour" things to do at USD per person. It's a farm with self guided trails in which the reception provides a map and booklet. The poison dart frogs are througnhout the farm but are most commonly seen in the covered bromeliad nursery. The end part was the most interesting as we were able to sample fruits and cacao. We were the only people there besides the workers at the time of our visit. I recommend to bring good walking shoes and be aware that it is not the easiest place to find...by luck we happened to see the faded sign on the road when we had to slow down for a cyclist or we would have totally missed it!

“Intro to the Jungle 101”
Reviewed 23 April 2014

Loved seeing lots and lots of red poison dart frogs! Saw one green and black poison dart frog too. At $6/pp, a self-guided tour with the provided booklet is one of the safest, prettiest, and cheapest ways to get into nature in the area and learn about it. This was a great way to introduce our children to the jungle before our more costly guided trek through Manzanillo. The variety of trees and plants is breathtaking!

“Interesting self-guided tour”
Reviewed 6 April 2014

Nice bit of a nature walk. We got to see howler monkeys and poison dart frogs in the wild and there were all sorts of medicinal and edible plants and trees. At the end you get small tastes of a few fruits and juice. We tasted bananas and rambutans and the juice actually seemed like powdered lemonade mix but who knows. Overall a good experience, but maybe don't expect too much out of the end.
