“Great steak, the ambiance: not so much”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 June 2014

Let me start off by saying I was raised in Argentina, and this is really great argentinean steak. The steaks come with some grilled vegetables (carrots, green beans) and about 2 little potatoes, so order a side dish if you are extra hungry. I did, scalloped potatoes, and they were delicious. Now to the ambiance: dudes, is it really that difficult to put up some citronella torches all over the open patio seating to try to make your guests comfortable and not an all you can eat buffet for mosquitoes? And the ants have free run of the place, so they will be all over your table. I understand this is the jungle, but other restaurants have found ways to keep the bugs at bay. If they can accomplish this, so can Malbec. You're paying $18 a steak, so you'd think you can do so without being paranoid that ants are climbing on your plate. The one thing that really bothered me was the owner lady's total nonchalant and mocking tone when she would see us swatting a bug away or switching chairs, she literally would laugh at us! lol. she would ask "what? what is it? what are you doing?" and we'd say "oh nothing, it's just the mosquitoes are crazy over here," and she would just laugh at us like we were idiots. so freaking rude lol. still, the steak is so good and the options are so slim here in the jungle that i give it 4 stars and we will visit again, strictly for the food. Oh, I also want to add that she was also rushing us (even though we were the ONLY couple there) and when I asked her for scalloped potatoes after I saw the two tiny potatoes that came on the plate, she goes "why didn't you tell me before?!" i mean seriously!? LOL

“Great small "steakhouse"”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2014

Malbec is a small, family-run Argentine-style steakhouse just down the road from the Le Cameleon hotel (on the way to Playa Chiquita). The place is very small, so reservations are important if you have your heart set on eating here.

The ambiance is neat, like an intimate dinner with friends on someone´s front porch. The food is high quality, but it is not a super-fancy place (like much of Puerto Viejo ;-) ). Service is friendly, fairly prompt and not overly formal.

The night we were there they had run out of skirt steak, as well as one of the wines we wanted to try. (I blame TripAdvisor.) Some ingredients/ products are hard to source, so don´t get your heart set on one particular dish.
The parillada mixta that we shared more than made up for it though. If you are into offal (sweetbreads, intestines, blood sausage), you will love it. Everything is very tasty and simply prepared.

It is a good idea to bring cash, if you can. This is still a small business, so while they can accept credit cards, they pass the extra fee on to the customer.
