“way overpriced”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2011

Well ,we ignored all the poor reviews of this place because we thought those people were complainers. Found out the hard way we agree with several complaints. The price seemed steep but after we got there I was floored that they had the nerve to charge $230.00 usd a night for what we had. They do say it is a retreat so the lack of ammenities in the rooms was not a suprise and was outlined on the website. But there wasn't even a clock in the room so how do you meet any schedualed tours? I brought a travel alarm clock so that problem solved myself.
We scheduled a morning bird watching tour and had to meet a car at 5:15 a.m. for the kilometer long driveway trip downhill to the main road. Well ...the car never showed and the tour never happened.Later that morning when inquiring about the no show we were told that the driver had slept in. Nothing more was done or said and it was left at that.
The staff don't really seem to care and it is too painfully obvious they are not formally trained in the hospitality industry. It is a rainforest but the lack of warning from staff and the room booklet do not prepare the people who are not in the know. There are red poison dart frogs all over the property and not one warning about not to touch them! We had to be mindfull about other things after we found a scorpion on the bathroom floor. That would have been a painfull nightime find for a bare foot in the dark.
That much money and the food was buffet ,how many people have memorable buffet meals? The owners of this place have to be making a killing for what they charge and what they provide.
Never again would I even imagine staying here.

Pros: Great location high up in the mountain. I was traveling on my own and it's a great place to meet people. Really enjoyed the twice-daily yoga class. Food is really good!
Cons: A bit pricey if you're not sharing a room. Some of the staff were a bit surly. Getting into town (Porto Viejo) can be a bit of a hassle, but there is daily 10:00 shuttle. The lack of WiFi was a problem for me as I was trying to research and book the rest of my trip. (There is one netbook w/ slow connection available for rent. And plenty of Internet cafes Puerto Viejo.)

Samasati exceeded all my hopes and expectations: A beautiful and relaxing place that delivered as advertised. The individual staff members were as wonderful as the place itself. Both the massage/Ayurvedic therapist and the yoga teacher were exceptional, dedicated and talented practitioners. The food was pure and delicious. (I woke up the other day dreaming of the coconut flan!) There were a number of possible excursions (as desired) or you could spend hours just soaking up the sights and sounds of the rainforest... just what I needed. I would - and hope to - spend time there again.

I stayed at Samasati in August as part of a yoga teacher training group and loved it! The food was excellent - I mean, really delicious. The ladies in the kitchen are so wonderful and pleasant and incredibly hard-working. The only reason I put the sleep quality at less than excellent is because it's the jungle and it can be loud. You get used to it, but at first, it can be a bit difficult to sleep. Other than that, I loved this place. I only left the property once during my two week stay, but it was a fairly easy jaunt into town. The beaches there are fine - nothing spectacular. I enjoyed the view of the ocean from Samasati a bit more than I did the view from the shore.

The grounds are lovely and there is something very special about the place. Lots of good healing energy resides there.

We enjoyed an amazing time at Samasati for the ShivaShakti Yoga Teacher Training. The staff took such amazing care of us, the food was delicious and healthy and the location is peaceful- perfect setting for a 22 day yoga training. Loved seeing all the wildlife- howler monkeys, cotes, morpho butterflies, toucans, etc. The weather was great during late October. I certainly recommend this retreat center.
