The Balinese-style cabins are all discretely located among the beautiful jungle gardens. The bathroom is a real surprise - each one is a mosaic work of art. The main restaurant/sitting area has a very nice ambiance and whole place makes you feel incredibly relaxed. The food is superb with a French bias. The sea is 5 mintues walk away down a level private footpath.

Absolutely perfect choice for our last 4 days in Costa Rica. Just the right combination of rustic and elegant.
Everything was excellent:
Location- a five minutes' drive from Puerto Viejo, just the perfect combination of seclusion and privacy yet still easily accessible and a one minute walk from the beautiful beach
Staff- EVERYONE is constantly smiling and helpful, from the elegant and gracious lady who owns the hotel to the receptionist and gardener. Either they really like working there or they're Oscar level actors...
Restaurant: great healthy breakfast each morning and a wonderful choice for dinner
Grounds- again, perfect. Just the right combination of grooming so you don't feel you need a machete to get to your room but still preserving the beautiful natural ecosystem
Wildlife- we saw just outside our bungalow a family of aguitis, howler monkeys, a green/black dart frog and the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica- a 30 minute encounter with a wild SLOTH from 3 feet away.

We rented just 1 km down the road and stopped in here to dine our first night before we had time to fill up the fridge (all the stores close down early). They cheerfully accommodated us and served us a nice meal. Note that you pay same prices as in U.S. and quality not always as good as U.S. But we appreciated that the chef did not over-salt the food here, which is what we found many places. The staff were delightful and the highlight of the evening was the absolutely lovely enormous covered porch we sat on, which reminded me of something you would see in Cambodia or Thailand. Plentiful parking.

During a 3 week tour of CR we spent 8 nights here at the end of our trip. This was by far the best place we stayed. The individual wooden bungalows are beautiful. The staff are sooo friendly and can't do enough for you and the food is immense (caribbean/french). We saw lots of wildlife in the grounds including frogs, birds, wild guinea pigs and a sloth. Would def recommend. (If I had to offer advice for improvement I would request tea/coffee making facilities in the room.)

This is a truly amazing place. If you're after somewhere in the jungle but with a bit of luxury - as we were - then this is for you.

You are in your own beautiful wooden lodge in the rainforest surrounded by massive trees and wildlife (tucans, frogs, howler monkeys, wild guinea pigs to name but a few animals you see or hear in the grounds) yet experiencing luxury! From the grounds of the hotel lodges you are a 5 minute walk down a secluded path to the beach - beautiful!

The lodge is spacious - it has a 4 poster bed and amazingly big, mosaic tiled bathroom. Showers are hot and powerful, products are nice (and organic!) and there's even a mini hairdryer in your room! The room has mosquito nets as windows and a big roof fan to keep you cool (and to keep any mosquitoes off!) you also have your own balcony with a hammock and sofa - perfect for a doze and you often spot (and hear!) wildlife while relaxing.

Breakfast was also good - massive plate of fresh fruit followed by freshly made eggs (fried or scrambled), toast and jams.

Overall, a great stay and we'd definitely recommend. One thing to note though if staying here - you are about a 10 minute drive from the main town centre of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. We loved this and think it's ideal (quieter, more secluded and nearer to wildlife) particularly as we had a hire car which you might want to consider while staying here.

My husband and I loved this hotel. The bungalows are very private and furnished very nicely. We loved the fact that the windows were covered with just grates so we could hear monkeys and wildlife at night. Honestly, our kids thought it was a bit too rustic (I thought I had raised more adventurous travelers!). We also loved the atmosphere and food at the restaurant. Overall, loved this hotel and would highly recommend! Go to the Sloth Sanctuary...it's great!

My husband and I were in a pickle, having driven over four hours from where we were staying in Escazu, and after wandering our way down the southern coast looking for beaches to explore...we realized we'd never make it back to Escazu without having to cross the mountains in the dark...so we decided to stay overnight...

We happened upon Shawandha Lodge looking for a room for the night, and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised! They happened to have one room available for one night, it was the day before Christmas Eve, and we were thrilled with the impeccable bungalow, and the price was amazingly reasonable.

We had a wonderful meal in the restaurant that was as good or better than many places I've been in my home in NYC, and my husband and I have already decided to book for next year so we can dig-in and stay in this area for a bit.

Room Tip: It's in the middle of the jungle. You will hear howling monkeys, the ocean, and all sorts of rea...
