We have been long time guests at the Hotel Totem, which merged with Cariblue. There are some pros and cons, but overall, it is a wash.

Cons - the breakfast - we absolutely loved the Hotel Totem breakfast better - bring back the banana pancakes!!!
Walking - everything is more spaced out, so we had a looong walk for anything we needed at the front desk, to get to breakfast, and the pool. People near the front desk had a long walk to the beach.

Pros - security - they really beefed up security, I never felt unsafe there.
Cariblue pool - the pool area is really nice.

We had issues with the wireless internet, the entire time of our 5 night stay.

We liked our stay, but miss the old Hotel Totem. We will probably look for another place for next time...

I want to start by warning you that the hotel is having serious problems with over bookings. We have been planning our month long trip to Costa Rica for 3 months and chose the Cariblue because of its location and previous good reviews. Be warned however that they are currently taking reservations via bookings.com without availability. When we checked in on the 22nd of February, we were informed that we could only stay for 2 nights evening though we were booked for 6. They informed us that bookings.com would not allow them to contact us to tell us the problem- however, I have since been in contact with bookings.com and they have denied this and have tried on our behalf to get us compensation- to which the Cariblue declined. We also booked the luxury detached bungalow, however they placed us in a box room semi bungalow- nothing like the picture on there website- we didn't even have bedside lamps and once our suitcases were in the room it was like a matchbox. They tried to offer us alternative lodgings, however being high season, they were ranked almost bottom on trip advisor and off course declined. I was as you can imagine rather angry and upset with this situation and when they wouldn't even let me use there internet to search for accommodation myself, I was ready to explode- my partner who hates confrontation had to walk away to calm down and leave me to argue, until finally they let me use there computer. ( wi fi does not work at this hotel as stated) During the 2 days at this hotel we met numerous other hotel guests who were in the same situation- some of which demanded that they will not be moving out as they had made the reservation- we so wish now we had done the same as at this time in the season everything in good location with good reviews are booked.
I will however complement the waiting general staff, who were always polite and did there best to make our short stay memorable.

Room Tip: Ensure you get what you book and pay for!!!!

We feel so sorry about what happened with three overbooking reservations in our hotel.

Some changes in the systems of internet services, made occur the overbooking errors that affected our reservations systems, not allowing us closing dates properly.

Knowing this, we set out to do everything possible to lessen the impact on the situation, unfortunately, these three reservations were affected by the technical problem we had.

We want to inform to all our respectful clients, that we did all our best to minimize the effect on the quality of the products we offer, but unfortunately, there were some of these customers that were affected, this because our high occupancy that is almost always 100 %; didn't give us the availability of rooms to be able to offer another option to our affected customers, causing the need to move the Guests to another accommodation option; some customers let us help them to book their rooms and some decided doing it themselves.

Regarding rates, we did charge only the nights that the customers stayed with us (We did not make any previously chargers).

Our Wireless Internet services certainly have been failing lately; our technicians constantly have been working on it, trying to get these back to work as quicker as possible for our customer satisfaction, now this matter is completely solved.

We appreciate our customer's understanding ànd we hope to keep serving you all as always.

Cordially,

Hotel Cariblue

The hotel with the rooms, garden, restaurant, pool bar is really nice. The service ok, sometimes it takes a long time to get what you want - Costa Rica time then.
We really enjoyed the near beach which is only to cross the road. To go to the center of Puerto Viejo you can rent also in the hotel a bike.
The only thing we did not really like was the dinner on New Years Eve - it was too expensive for what you get.

We have just returned from a full week at Cariblue, and we absolutely loved staying here. First of all, whoever decided to build this lovely little place in the middle of the jungle was a genius. The grounds are stunning, with huge 100 foot trees all around, and lots of ferns and many, many plants all throughout. Our family of 8, my wife and I, our four kids and two grandparents were all comfortably accommodated in the jungle house and a superior bungalow.

The staff were very nice, but not overly so, like most Ticos. Never did we feel pressured into tipping, ordering, booking, or anything really. It is an incredibly relaxed place.

The pro's:
• The location is excellent. In the jungle, which keeps it cool with lots to look at. However Playa Cocles is across the street (which means a small road, takes about 10 seconds to cross). Puerto Viejo is a short 5 minute cycle ride, or 20 minute walk. Also very pleasant. Hotel is well located to get to all the local tours and attractions
• The hotel has all modern conveniences. A fantastic pool, which is excellent for small children. One of the best small pools our family has benefitted from. Nice restaurant. Wifi. Good breakfast buffet. TV if you like. Access to bicycles. A spa. You can charge everything to the room. Everything really.
• Staff are excellent. The cleaning staff were outstanding. Restaurant staff work very hard, and are always bustling around.
• The grounds are impeccable. Very clean, just gorgeous.
• Service was very good. All needs were taken care of.
• Breakfast was plentiful and good. Fresh eggs, pancakes. Buffet style pastries, gallo pinto, other foods, fruits were fantastic. Juice and coffee all day.
• We ate at the restaurant one night. Also good.

Cons:
• Pricey for the area, but you get what you pay for.
• Pool bar was rarely staffed, very hard to get a drink. Which is frustrating. For the management, why not consider table/lounger service around the pool, I am sure guests would love it, and I am sure lots more drinks would be solved. We had to leave the pool, sopping wet, try to catch a restaurant workers eye and ask for service. Kinda pointless having a swim up bar in this case.
• We had constant issues with our safes. However, on the plus side, the staff responded immediately and always fixed the issue.
• Bikes were significantly more to rent than in town, we felt a bit gouged by that.

Overall, I would say Cariblue is fantastic, and was a big factor in possibly the best vacation we've ever taken. It is one of the fancier places in Puerto Viejo area, so expect to pay a bit more, but like I said you get what you pay for. We just loved this place and were very, very well taken care of.

¡Pura Vida!

Room Tip: Superior bungalows and jungle home are further into the jungle, so cooler and more private. The other rooms are closer to the beach and less expensive.
