“Disapointed”
Reviewed 27 March 2014

Stayed 4 nights here, unfortunately prepaid. Maybe my standards are too high, but the place needs more than just a bit of love to regain some ground.

The room was clean but very basic, small and quite bomb-sheltery. The wifi did not work; there was signal, that is not the problem, but after they told me they would look into it, nothing. Well, we went in the lobby like everyone.

The gardens are very nice though. The pool was nice BUT cloudy. One afternoon, they weedwacked for hours, even with people a few meters from them. Very annoying.

We were out of water for 4-5 hours one evening and when it came back, it smelled like the pool. It was night, no water truck came ( called pipa there, you know when they are close because they are quite noisy ) and I went out to see after my shower. The staff was suspiciously working with a pump and pipes. Quite disgusting.

Restaurant is overpriced; breakfast is alright, coffee is AWFULL. To be so close to great coffee plantations, and drink such bad coffee. A shame!

Won't go back!

People who give this hotel 5 stars have clearly not stayed in good hotels. Let's get a few things straight. It is one of the best hotels in Puerto Viejo but at best it is a 3 star property. Rooms are basic, beds, linen etc. old, worn and in some cases threadbare. Nice staff who do the best they can. I am not saying don't come here, but just be prepared.

Spent 3 nights at this wonderful hotel in the jungle. Beautiful grounds with lots of birds to watch. Our cabin was very comfortable and clean, the pool is lovely, and the staff friendly. The breakfasts we had were delicious and we ate two dinners in the restaurant which were also excellent. We walked to town and also to the Jaguar Rescue Centre. If you don't like a long walk there are bikes to rent. The only recommendation I could make is to put a small iron and ironing board in the rooms. Would be happy to stay here again.

Our room at the Totem was spacious and very comfortable. We had a private pool right outside our patio door and the beach was just a few steps away. The grounds are beautiful and the staff were very helpful. The breakfast was fresh with a lot of variety. I was very pleased with my stay and wished I stayed a few more nights.

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Cariblue that just rescently combined with Totem Hotel. We ate at the Totem Beach Bar and just loved it. We were told that Cariblue is eventually going to eliminate the menu at Totem Beach Bar. BIG mistake and I hope the owners are listening. The menu has so many different things to pick from and the food was great. I feel give people more of a selection at the 2 restaurants. Leave Totem Beach Bar alone.

Darlene and I stayed here from March 8-15. It is a long day to get here but is WELL worth the trip. Hotel Cariblue is set in a jungle setting with Playa Cocles beach right across the street. I cannot say enough about how beautiful this place is. Totally different than an all inclusive although it did include breakfast. There is a great restaurant with a bar, pool and swim up bar. Very small and relaxing. We stayed in a bungalow. The one downside was the shower that we complained about but we were told that it is the dry season and they have problems then. There was enough pressure but it was either very hot or cold. We just could not mix it together. Some other people also complained about this. Then again you are in Costa Rica. That was the only problem otherwise it was amazing. There were monkeys in the trees and exotic birds flying over head. Food and drinks were excellent. The pool temp was perfect. The town of Puerto Viejo nearby is a GREAT party town. And yes we did. I love it when a place exceeds my expectations.

I really enjoyed this hotel. They seemed a little confused about our reservation when we checked in, but they gave us two beautiful rooms that were very spacious (would be super for a family travelling here)! We were next to the main road and had a beautiful swimming pool that was just like having a private pool right outside our back door! We could also go out our back door, through the back gate, cross the road and be at the beach which was very clean compared to the beaches closer to town. Breakfast is really good, actually all our breakfasts in Costa Rica were better than any continental breakfast elsewhere! We also ate dinner at the hotel restaurant and this was one of the best places we ate. You might also try Maxi's in Manzanillo. Rooms are clean and very comfortable.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the rooms right along the road, by the back bar. Quiet and private area. It does requir...
