“Delightful Relief”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

We had traveled by car all over Costa Rica. We stayed in local places everywhere with varying results. Without question, Coco Loco was the best. it is located a few blocks from the beach so everything is walkable but quiet. Our bungalow was immaculate. In fact, everything was immaculate. The bungalows offer privacy while the footpaths and the open-air lobby allow you to meet your fellow travelers. If you're just lazing about, lying on your hammock but need entertainment, they have a library. The staff, especially a gentleman in his prime, were helpful and gave excellent advice.

If you're traveling in CR, I'm sure you've heard repeatedly about parking your car in a secured area. Although they take no responsibility, this was the first and only time we felt entirely comfortable leaving the contraption.

The most sound sleep we had.

Room Tip: If you want to meet people, ask to be on the east side, a bit more privacy the west.

We stayed at Coco Loco for 4 nights in May 2014 (couple in our late 20s). The staff was really friendly and helpful upon arrival. Our private bungalow was fantastic! Everything we had hoped it to be. We opted out of the A/C and didn't need it at all. There is a large fan on the wall pointing at the bed and that is all that we needed. There was a tv in the room, but since we were in paradise we never turned it on. We had one issue with the shower handle, but it was fixed first thing in the morning after we reported the problem. There is a mini fridge in the room which was nice to keep fruit and beverages in. It was truly splendid lounging on our deck with the hammock during our down time. The location of Coco Loco lodge is perfect. Just about 3 blocks walk to the main center of town where all the action happens at night, 2 blocks from the public bus stop and 1 bock from a super market. It was also tucked away nicely so that if you chose to stay in, you don't hear the noise of the lively town. We went out to the bars almost every night of our stay and felt completely safe walking around. If we had any questions, the staff was there to help. While you are in Puerto Viejo, everyone will tell you to never leave anything unattended on the beach. You should really listen to them. We were naive and buried our bag in the sand while we went surfing. And of course, when we returned to it, it was dug up and gone. The only thing of value was an iphone and our lodging keys. The staff at Coco Loco were really nice about the situation (us losing our keys). Of course we had to pay to have the locks changed on our unit but that was to be expected for our idiocy. Oh! I would say that one of the best perks of the bungalow was the safe deposit box. Though we are very trusting, it was so nice to be reassured that our passports, credit cards and cash were secured away while we played in Puerto Viejo. Lastly, pay the full deposit in cash when you check in/out...you will should get a 20% discount! That was definitly a pleasant surprise.

We stayed here five nights in May showed up without a reso and they were able to accommodate us! We did two nights no AC and then three nights with AC, we were comfortable without it but since we didn't have a reso we had to change rooms so we splurged! The rooms were clean, gorgeous little cabins with so much privacy. You have your own patio with hammock and they include mosquito coils which made it delightful to sit outside at night and have a beer. All the rooms had a fridge and tv but you won't need the tv. It's a 2 second walk to everything from here yet it's tucked in the corner which gives you the sense of being further- no noise at night from the bars and busy street. Yet everything just outside your door, restaurants, beech, bars, superstore. Definitely better value then a lot of hone other places which charges $40 /night, the others just can't compare to this place. We looked at seven other hotels in the area around the same price(actually went and looked at the rooms and grounds) this is by far the best cleanest value for your money in the $35-50/night range.

We would highly recommend others to stay here. Clean rooms, nice bathroom, comfortable bed, nice patio and great kitchen, beautiful gardens and terrific staff. The staff booked all of our excursions and helped us out when our VISA didn't communicate properly. We found the property to be extremely quiet and very peaceful yet close to all amenities.

We would do 4.5 stars if we could because the negative things are not that big at all. We traveled with our two young kids (9 and 7) in Feb. The cabin was very clean and quite pretty, with super comfortable beds, excellent mosquito nets, hot water, and a fully stocked kitchen (even stocked with a few basics like salt, pepper, sugar). The porch overlooked some well-tended gardens and was very peaceful. The cabin was hot during the day as would be expected, but cooled off well during the night. We appreciated that the location was not in the midst of the revelries, so we slept well in the comfortable beds. Reviews complained that the road there was dangerous, but it really wasn't a problem at all. We were glad we had a small flashlight, but we never worried for our safety at all. It took 5 minutes to walk to the grocery store and Playa Negra. There was a great outdoor shower to "desand". Staff were very responsive to any and all needs we had, and were very interesting friendly people.

The only small negatives were that they advertised wifi, but it didn't reach the cabin we rented well enough. We skyped from the reception area, which may have been a problem if there had been other people hanging out there. Also, there was playground equipment and the kids ran to play on it. However, it was not in good condition at all. The kids got some splinters and part of the seesaw broke when sat upon (without any horseplay). The staff apologized profusely and fixed things, but I would recommend just not playing on the structure at all.

We (couple, 41 & 50) stayed at Coco Loco Lodgefor two nights in March 2014. We paid $55 for a room with a bathroom with a comfortable double bed, fan and cable TV. The room was hot during the day but we did not pay extra for air-conditioning. The bathroom was small but clean. There was a small refridgerator and coffee maker (no coffee) in the room and breakfast was available for $7. The hotel is located on a sketchy street but was quiet and had nice gardens. We read complaints about biting ants, but not see them. The hotel is 5 minutes away walking from the beach, restaurants, the bus stop, shops and ATMs. The wi-fi was virtually non-existent and the lobby computer rarely connected to the internet. Coco Loco Lodge is a good value and we would stay there again.

This hotel is pretty and clean but it lacks soul. I wouldn't stay here again, there are other places in Limon that are better.
The staff (and owner) wouldn't give you any tips of where to go or what to do, they just point you to a pile of brochures.
Overall it's fine, not great.

Thank you for your review and statement, I am sorry we did not fill your expectations in recommendations what to do in your vacations. I have to say that we are not a tour office or travel agency but usually we recommend our guests tours and we also organize them. We also explain our village map at check in and where to go in town. In high season we are very busy with check ins and outs or breakfast and maybe we recommended taking a look first at our folders to choose what you want because there are so many tours and we cannot know what kind every single client wants in the first place. I hope the next hotel you choose will fill your terms.
