Jacaranda Hotel and Jungle Garden
Reviewed 5 January 2009

We arrived at Jacaranda through a mix-up, and at first we loved it. That lasted for all of two days when the owner started controlling everything we were doing and telling us what we could and could not cook in a passive agressive manner. We became stressed out by the owner´s disprectfulness towards us and the way that her staff began treating us as well. The first room we had was accurately priced, but the second room we had was grossly overpriced and junky. We did not enjoy our time there the second half of our stay at all. The garden and ability to use the kitchen were the only highlights. We would definitely not recommend staying here simply because the owner proved to be overly disprespectful and full of attitude. If you´re looking for a budget option, go to the Oro Seafood Restaurant down the block where rooms are clean and simple, costing only 2500 colones per person per night owned by a really nice local Tico family.

When we walked into Cabinas Jacaranda we were immediately taken with the beautiful gardens that Vera has cultivated there. She really has it set up so you feel as if you are in a very tropical area which although partly true, is less so than other places in Costa Rica.

Unfortunately, when we went to the town, apparently Puerto Viejo was having problems with water supply so Vera was unable to offer laundry service. Luckily there was a laundromat just a block away from the hotel, which we used.

Our room was all wood, simply decorated, with some nice touches (there were paintings of flowers on the walls), and there was a hammock outside if we wanted to use it.

There are no screens on the windows/doors, so there are mosquito nets over the beds. Everything was clean.

There are a couple of foot baths in the garden for when you are returning to your room all sandy, which was a nice touch as well.

Some people might find Vera a bit brash, but my companion liked that about her, I think to each their own!!

Some one told us about this little hotel and we decided to go there. It seemed to me a little far from the beach first, but after all it was better that way couse we were away from noise at night and to walk was good after all. The rooms were a little small, and ours was particullary dark, I imagine there are some better ones. The town was amazing, and the beach is just incredible!!! The hotel was fun, good if you are looking for a good price and you don't mind to be a few blocks away from the beach.

Cabinas Jacaranda was a really cute place that made us feel welcome in Puerto Viejo. Vera (the ownder) and the other lady working at the front desk made big efforts to ensure our room was ready for us and really tried to make our stay as comfortable and easy as possible. Vera was especially warm and welcoming!

There is a large central garden with beautiful plants, and a small central area with two hammocks that were great to rest in. The tiled floor, artwork, and handpainted decorations made this place absoultely charming.

The shared bathroom was no problem at all- conveniently located outside of our room. Our room had its own shower as well but the hot water didn't work- we didn't even miss it though because it was so hot outside. We were thankful for the mosquito net over the bed! Aside from a lizard and some bugs that got inside, the room was clean, hand painted, and just the right size. The main gate is locked at night and each guest is provided with a key to access it at night for extra security.

A side note- there were fireworks constantly going off during the middle of the night because it was close to New Year's and dogs barked all night too. This was a bit disruptive but the Vera (the owner) was well aware of this and provided us with earplugs.

Once you enter Cabinas Jacaranda, you're in another world! Beautiful garden surrounds the arty cabinas complete with colourful murals and luscious flowers. Hammocks abound and there's a restaurant and a yoga area. It's also quite near to the main drag, so you don't end up walking down those badly lit roads on your tod in the dark late at night.

The owner was very friendly and accomodating, though she did tell me the only room available was for 4 people, pricey for a lone traveller, but I took it as I was spellbound by the place, after a few hours of chilling in paradise lodge, I did in fact realise, there were loads of empty smaller rooms on sight. maybe they were reserved for later on that day? After all, she told me she hated charging so much for a single person....nope, they were still empty next morn. Bad move lady. So, ended up paying more than was necessary, which made me move on to a more honest place the following day.
