“Family of 4 Loved it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2012

The bungalows, grounds and the pool were better than we thought it was going to be. Puerto Viejo, Cahuita and Mazanillo are all amazing too. The bungalow itself was large, spacious and had a great bathroom - it felt like you were showers outside. No need for A/C - it really cooled off at night. Right outside out bungalow was a 3 toed sloth. The grounds had great landscaping and it attracted a lot of really cool birds. The pool was perfect. There are only 8 bungalows so you feel like you have the place to yourself. The breakfast in the morning was very good - lots of fruit and good coffee. The location was nice - away from Puerto Viejo but still within waliking distance. We walked to the town everynight and back with no problems. RIght across the street is a great beach. We have nothing but great things to say about Azania and would stay there again!

Room Tip: One of the best places to stay in the area. Right between Cahuita and Manzanillo.

Our first stop on a recent visit to Costa Rica was Azania Bungalows, at Cocles Beach, near Puerto Viejo on the southern end of Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. We loved the location, with private bungalows set in a beautiful tropical garden. The birdlife was prolific, and we also saw some mammals, including a sloth in a tree at the entrance (see photo). The bungalow was spacious and comfortable, and the staff were very accommodating. The breakfast was most enjoyable, we also ate dinner there on 2 of the 3 nights. Lovely garden setting and good food. The beach was just across the road, so no need for driving. Good value.

Nice location close to town. The rooms were suprisingly bug-free and comfortable for sleeping. The room was about as clean as you'd expect when 1/3 of the wall space is made up of screens. One highlight was being able to see hummingbirds outside from the shower. The staff was fine, not overly great, but by no means rude. Breakfast every morning was great.

During our stay, not all the staff was friendly. Shower is OK, although water wasn't that hot, but refreshing. Breakfast, swimmingpool was OK. Dinner we took at a restaurant 5 minutes walk (when leaving Azania on your left) "El Sol de la Caribe". Good food, reasonable prices. Friendly.

We stayed here a few days ago. it was nice but still feel over priced at $100 a night... in keeping with our general feeling of being over charged for food and accommodation throughout Costa Rica. Having said that there were only 2 of us and a bungaow would sleep 4 so $100 between 4 ppl would not be too bad. no air con or tv. rooms were airy and cool though with 2 over head fans. 2 min walk across rd to cocles beach. we had a car so location suited us fine. but with no car you would very much be relying on taxi, bike or a long walk to get to PV town. rooms clean enough, not quite European standards however...again this can be applied to all places we stayed. only 10 bungalows and all with good privacy. lovely pool. Breakfast only went to 9:30 so as we were on holidays we were having a lie on and it was too early so Cant comment on the food. Drinks by the pool were $2 for a beer which was reasonable...they were nearly twice that in the cariblue hotel next door.

Having previously stayed at the bungalows for a couple of years, my husband and I did so again last month (Jan 2012). As we were interested in retiring to the area, Azania was perfectly situated for us to hone in on the nuances of the 'neighborhoods'. Unfortunately, our future took a significant turn, when we were attacked while we were staying there by a man with a machete. The event happened in mid-afternoon (1:30pm) while we were riding bicycles that we had rented from Azania. We were on the main road headed towards Manzanillo (to the right from Azania).

We were leisurely riding the bikes, about to go up a hill, when all of a sudden, a man with a black-hood charged after us, coming out of the jungle. He stole everything we had - all of our cash, credit cards, driver's licenses, passports, car keys, iphones, camera, etc. I was terribly injured. The whole incident took about a minute an 1/2.

We waved down a car that happened to come along about 2 minutes later and they called the police, who then showed up about 45minutes later. The whole incident was an absolute nightmare, as we were given no help (I was bleeding profusely from my arm and leg and was offered no water to clean, no bandage, NOTHING). After filing a report, we made out way back to Azania, having no identification, no money. We desperately asked the management (the owner) there for help. We were asked how we expected to pay the $10 for the bicycle rental (we had no money - EVERYTHING was STOLEN). We were told they could not help us at all. All they could do was charge our credit card (which had been stolen) for our room and food that we purchased at Azania. They could not help us otherwise. Our next few days were spent trying to make our way back to the embassy in SJ. It was an traumatic experience and made even worse so by the entire staff at the Azania.

The only person who helped us was a wonderful woman back in San Jose. Her name is Carla Franco, and she is the manager of the Holiday Inn in San Jose. When we arrived and told her what had happened to us (and seeing how badly I had been damaged and still not cared for - having no money for peroxide, bandages or salve), she not only offered us dinner that night, but offered to take us to the embassy, herself, the following morning. I CANNOT say enough about Carla.

Needless to say, there is a lot more to this story. The main point of the story is, DO NOT ride bicycles to Manzanillo - no matter what time of day. DO NOT go beyond Cocles. DO NOT expect to receive any help from Anzania. They are heartless.

Room Tip: Do not lose your key - that's a $50 replacement charge.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 January 2012

Stayed Jan 4th to the 8th, 2012. Beautiful grounds, good breakfasts, better dinners. Some other posts I read were that staff was less than friendly. I am barely able to communicate in Spanish, but found that showing an interest in learning about the area and the people brought out a very warm and helpful aspect in everyone, from housekeeping (Doris) to the front desk (Katherine).

In spite of having two solid days of steady rain and sea conditions that were poor, we had a great time relaxing in the covered areas, playing cards and visiting. Staff was willing to prepare food and drinks if wanted, but no pressure to have us buy or move, Lots of interesting details, flora and fauna on the grounds. The last day the rains lifted, animals came out, there were two sloths that came down from their rainshelters to let folks discretely take photos.

Yes, the beach is better for EXPERIENCED surfers, so do not choose this area if you have folks who need milder water sports.

Lastly, the showers - Lorenzetti "heated" shower heads are very common in CR. They may not meet expectations for North Americans as they tend to not get really hot (in the tropics, who needs HOT). If you can not get the temp you want, check with a staff person on operation, many places in suffer poor electrical controls so the circut breaker may need to be reset.
