We stayed for two nights at Kaya's place. The paintings are really nice and the beds are good. The room is very dark. The fan on the room was nice. You can sit on a baboobed or take one of the hammocks to use the WIFI, that was really relaxing. The best WIFI signal is at the bar. The shared bathrooms were okay but some people don't now how to behave. The staff cleaned very well. I think that they ask a little to much for the rooms. The are locadet just out the busy center of PV so if you needed a more quite location this is a good place to stay

This is a place for backpackers. The décor is super funky and just plain weird. Shower and bathroom had rust and grime. It's way overpriced for what you get. Arrived late in the evening, so we ate in the hotel restaurant. I had pasta, which was undercooked and pretty bland. Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful.

Note: This place is on the outskirts of town. You have to walk over a bridge, where a lot of sketchy people hang out (think druggies and low-lifes) to get into town. It's not too far to walk into the main town, but as a woman, I would not do it alone at night. I walked in with my male travel partner.

We stayed here just one night on our way to Panama. On our way back thru town, we stayed closer to the center. Most places in the town are low-budget funky backpacker places. We noted later that there are much nicer places 10 - 15 mins drive south of town. Many of these places are on or near lovely deserted beaches and are a definite notch up from the places in town. Do yourself a favor. Take a taxi or use the local bus service and stay further south.

Scrambling to find a place to sleep at 8pm, we settled with this place over the phone. With AC we got a room for $57. It was a tiny room with one of those bathrooms that is part of the room (walls don't go all the way to the top). With window only on one side, the room smelled very moldy; the AC came in handy for that. The inside walls are painted golden yellow with Aztec motif; for such small space it was all too much. Next morning I strolled through the property (which overall has very nice yards/gardens), and noticed the ground floor rooms all have a small patio area in the front with table and chairs (so that was nice). La Playa de Negro is directly across the road from this place, so a stroll on the beach was easy. But the town otherwise is too far to walk to. We checked into town the next day.

Room Tip: AC highly recommended (extra $10).

I must say this hotel grew on me and I became quite attached. From the outside looks can be deceiving. I will tell you that this hotel is very comfortable, the staff is very friendly, and the location is very convenient for all things. I walked just 10 minutes to get to central Puerto Viejo daily to enjoy restaurants, cafes, bars and shop at the supermarket. I was even able to walk to the Bus Terminal on my last day with luggage without problems (15 mins). Also you would have access to Playa Negra directly across the road. Laundry service available on site for only $8 a load. I would say this is the best service I received in Costa Rica during my entire month stay. I liked it so much, I stayed an extra two days. I highly recommend this guesthouse/hotel because of its WiFi, location and comfort. The only thing I had an issue with was : the room being advertised as a room with an ocean view. That clearly was not true. You must got outside on the common balcony to see the ocean for all rooms.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for private in-suite bathroom, so worth it.

I loved the look of Kayas place from the street. The cool architecture, funky wall murals and cozy hammocks lining the balcony are what initially drew us in, but it was the wonderful staff and family atmosphere that made us fall completely in love with Kayas!
We rented the "Mango House" for 3 nights in December and my only complaint is that 3 nights just wasn't long enough!! The rooms are very clean, the landscaping is great, and as I touched on earlier, the staff (and other vacationers for that matter) instantly made us feel like we were a long-lost part of the huge family that is Kayas Place.
The BriBri Springs beer brewed onsite by JT is unique and so delicious and the evenings we spent in Luke's Tap House with Anthony and JT swapping stories and meeting new people were always fun.
Accommodation wise, there truly is something for everyone in every price-range at Kayas Place, small basic rooms, larger more spacious rooms, apartments with kitchens, and the adorable 2 bedroom house that we stayed in (all of these are VERY reasonably priced)
Do not be misled by all of the TripAdvisor disclaimers that "So-and-so is friends on FaceBook with Kayas Place" When you spend a little time here, you will probably realize that you too want to send them a friend request so you won't miss them so much when you have to leave! ~True story told from experience! ;) I now understand that the FaceBook friendships are not the cause of the great reviews, the great reviews are the reason for the FaceBook friendships!
Pura Vida, JT, Anthony and the rest of the staff! We can't wait until we see you all again! <3 Shannon & Wade

Hotel is basic, we paid $32 a night but if you want a/c it's $50. We opted for $32 because when we were there a/c wasn't needed. Room is basic but clean, but what made it good was the upstairs patio. You can just sit there and look out at the beach. There's also some hammocks hanging if you want. The staff is very helpful and nice. The downtown is a short 5 min walk, so the location is great. They have free wifi and a restaurant that offer an array of beers. I recommend this place if your goal is to enjoy the city rather than enjoy the room.

Close to town, but far enough away to be able to get a good nights sleep. The staff is great, especially Kendra the girl at the front desk!! I miss relaxing in one of the hammocks on the upstairs balcony overlooking the ocean!! It's basic accommodations but as long as you do not have unrealistic expectations about what you get for a $30 room, you won't be disappointed!! for $50 you can upgrade to a room with AC if the heat is too much for you, as long as there is availability. We stayed here one night on the way to Bocas del toro, Panama and on the way back. A special thanks to the owner TJ who was kind enough to let us keep our rental car parked on the property and most of our luggage in the office so we only had to bring a small bag with us on our side trip to Panama!!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Door is Always Open at Kaya's Place... Kaya's Place is a 26 room lodge on the stunning Black Beach in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. Built in the Afro-Caribbean "Rustico" style, the hotel is artistic and unique. Local woods and materials have been used in their natural state, making each room different and beautiful. Every space you encounter will be a pleasurable experience. The sound of the waves is always in the background, soothing and tranquil, guaranteed to take you away from the stress of everyday life. Inside the hotel, you will find many places to relax. The reception area is more like a living room, with a gigantic sofa, television, people to chat with and view of the ocean. The large deck upstairs has a wonderful ocean view with hammocks and sofas - perfect for reading or taking a siesta. In the back, gardens line the walkway, filled with local plants and flowers. A covered sitting area in the garden offers another opportunity to meet and enjoy the company of others while you stay with us. Our restaurant is spacious and open with view of the ocean and a small creek with fish, water lilies, crab and other water life. Located in Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean Coast, the area is blessed with natural beauty in the form of dense jungle with impressive flora and fauna and some of the world's most beautiful beaches. Kaya's Place is part of the growing eco-tourism industry that supports the preservation of almost 2 million square meters of primary rainforest. Taxes from this industry support the many national reserves and efforts to maintain the natural resources. We are dedicated to preserving these resources while sharing it with all the people that come to know this amazingly beautiful part of Costa Rica. Our recent renovation of Kaya's Place was completed with the same philosophy. No lumber or materials were taken from the primary rainforest. Much was recycled wood or dead fall from local farms and lumber that had washed up from the ocean and rivers. With these natural and renewable materials, we achieved a unique character with rustic and artistic designs. Also all the walls are painted by hand, with many details and awesome drawings.
