“Stay here, by far the best in the area!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2013

We just got done with a 4 day stay here at the resort, and it was amazing. The owner Colin greeted us and was around during the stay, and the staff was very accommodating. Here's a run down:
Location: About 1 mile outside Puerto Viejo, about 30 minutes by beach, or $4 by taxi. Basically you're in a place that's totally serene. About 100 ft. from the beach, it's perfect and there's drink service at the beach- including coffee at 5 am for the sunrise. Even though you're outside the city, it's a huge plus. As for getting food, Breakfast is included. Lunch and dinner are by menu, but seriously high quality food.
Rooms and Ambiance: Rooms were nice and decorated in the Caribbean way. Doors led to the outside with a balcony and hammock. Had a strong fan and mosquito net for those who want some more air circulation and leave the doors open. Fresh pool with fountain were right outside the rooms and everything was very relaxed on the resort property. The beach was perfect and quiet with no people selling anything or bothering you.
Food: Coffee was great, and always available at 5 am for those early risers. First night we had amazing fish and steak, with respective sauces. Lunches were good, just off the menu. Breakfasts were different everyday, and the Caribbean pancakes were to die for(bananas, toasted coconut, and pinapple sauce). We were more than happy to eat any meals at the resort.
A nice surprise was that they must have overhead us say it was for our anniversary, and the next day we had a bottle of wine, chocolate, and fruit waiting in our room. This was a nice touch and showed they know service. Bike rentals and bodyboard rentals were easily available. Staff all spoke excellent english(or were native english speakers), and very helpful.

Room Tip: Ocean suites were great, Howler room has the special tub and faces the ocean on two sides.

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay. The rooms are very comfortable and have hammocks on the balcony. And most of the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Overall it's just a very comfortable place to relax and enjoy yourself. And the semi-private beach is great too. You can easily spend your entire time just relaxing at the hotel but there's also plenty of adventures close to the hotel too.

Probably the biggest knock is that it's a long drive from San José to get there. We had the misfortune of coming in when the main highway was closed because of road damage. That was no fault of the hotel of course, but it did take us many hours of driving*. But it was worth the effort for us.

* If you drive, get a GPS or GPS app - I bought the iGo iphone app for Costa Rica and it worked great (the user interface is terrible but it got us to our destinations).

Room Tip: This would be a great place for a group or family to get multiple rooms together because the balconi...

I found the grounds of this property to be astonishing. Right on the beach and amazing vegetation. It is definitely not a 5 star hotel, (no AC and no maid folding your towels into the shape of monkeys or swans), but I still think it might be the best hotel in Puerto Viejo.

We stayed in the Howler suite for 4 days and really enjoyed ourselves. The staff was able to rent us bikes, and Ashton from their Gecko Adventures was helpful and very friendly. The kayak tour was pretty cool!.

My only 2 complaints (very small) is that there is not much privacy on the balconies. There is just a very thin pull out bamboo wall that separates you from your neighbor. The hotel is very quaint though, so we accepted it. The beach is damn near private, that is awesome! The bartender Roberto can use some fine tuning. He was never flat out rude, just seemed a little burnt out on his job, and bit agitated to serve you. I sighed one time and rolled his eyes. The rest of the staff was top notch though!

I would recommend this place and would stay here again. If you go here, have a drink down the street at the point. Tons of fun!

Room Tip: Howler suite will give you the best view of the beach.

The owner came to meet us on arrival , the staff were so friendly. The rooms were soo cozy and tropical and very clean . We stayed in the sloth cabana and the Dolphin suite , both highly recommended . We biked into town and walked the beach to town both 10-15 min , great sights . Keep your backpacks at resort and just take $$ in pocket as we were told bags can be swiped easy . The food at resort was excellent @ every meal and a good variety from sea bass with lime to wonderful vegetarian lasagna !! Recommend this place to everyone !!!

You can not go wrong if you choose to stay at The Banana Azul. We stayed in the Garden Suite and it was a very nice environment to spent your private leisure time. The owner Colin is a very gracious host and welcomes everyone that comes through the gate whether you are a guest, visitor staying at surrounding hotels or to any of the many local residents who stop to visit. Colin and his staff make sure everyone who enters is welcome and taken care of.

Colin has built a team of dedicated staff who are very focused on customer/guest services. The food at the hotel is excellent, the fruit drinks are refreshing, made only with the freshest ingredients. The restaurant staff were friendly, of special note was Kirlin, Roberto and Anarossa as well as chef Walter had the biggest smile to all guests. Joel on evenings and the ladies during the day shift on the front desk staff were extremely helpful and a wealth of information, what they didn't know they sought out. The housekeeping were very good at keeping our rooms spotless. Rick and the garden staff kept the ground immaculate and ensured the fish were fed daily. Jaikel, the massage therapist also offers facials. I had a 80 minute marine facial which was relaxing and my skill felt so wonderful following this. Jaikel is also seen giving Free hand massages on the beach, these were also very wonderful. We did not get the opportunity for a full body massage but other guests who did raved about them.

We cannot say enough about our wonderful stay at the Banana Azul, we look forward to returning sometime in the future. This is a little place on earth that you can forget about everything and truly "Chill out" and enjoy nature, the surf and the beach.

Of note, this hotel had a tip box at the reception which is forwarded to the housekeeping, gardeners and security staff. Be sure to slip them a little something to show your appreciation for their hard work.

Myself and my husband spent a week and a half travelling through Costa Rica for our honeymoon. After travelling to Arenal and Monteverde this was our last stop. Banana Azul and it's staff surpassed our expectation. We stayed in the Howler Room which I would recommend to all honeymooners! We enjoyed sleeping at night with both sets of doors open hearing the ocean as we fell asleep. The food was amazing and the staff went out of their way to ensure I could eat the meals as I have a food allergy.

How better to start your day than to have coffee on the beach at 5:30!! I recommend renting the bikes and taking your time to bike through the area. Given that this was our last stop we relaxed on the beach the majority of our 6 night stay. We also visited the Jaguar rescue Centre and pure jungle spa... I recommend both!

This place feels like a small family and Colin (from Canada yahhhh!) made our stay that much more enjoyable.

Can't wait to come back :)

Room Tip: Sorry there is no fitness centre I couldn't erase the rating. Howler Suite was beautiful and...

This hotel was gorgeous, comfortable, clean and in the perfect location. The staff was friendly and helpful and the food was so good we ate all of our meals at the restaurant! It was perfect for us and made our trip to Costa Rica even more amazing. Highly Recommended!
