“Good things happen to good people.......”
Reviewed 21 March 2010

It's all been said again and again about the professional and hospitality as well as the amazing location of this very special place. It's incredible value for our dollar (even if it is Canadian!!) but most of all this is about being around good people - good management, good staff, good food. The old adage ... good things happen to good people comes to mind and Colin and Roberto, you epitomize that for us. This was our second visit and next time we'll stay much longer our third time!

Take care.

We stayed at Banana Azul last month for a little over a week. When we first booked Banana, we thought that this would be plenty of time, but once we got there, we wanted to stay longer. This place is a true gem with it's warm hospitality, beautiful accomodations and attentive staff. While it is clearly not a B&B, they do serve a very good breakfast daily. Colin and Roberto have done a fabulous job by making sure that their guests experience the best that Costa Rica has to offer. We spent our 25th wedding anniversary here and are looking forward to spending many more.

Banana Azul is a really special place. The atmosphere is delightfully casual and pleasing. Our room was thoughtfully simple and attractive. We had wonderful views of the ocean and the beautiful tropical gardens from our porch. Everything you need for a comfortable stay is right there when you want it. We loved the food, which was well-prepared and nicely presented. We met so many really friendly people, of all different ages and backgrounds. It is such a welcoming place. We went between beach, pool, whirlpool, & restaurant/bar and just got lost in the relaxation. Colin and Roberto, the owners, took real interest in how we were doing and were always helpful when we needed help, as were the rest of the staff. Gecko Travel did a fantastic job of arranging all our transportation and outings. We also had Ayurvedic massages that were totally wonderful. We will definitely be back, as soon as possible.

The feeling here is warm and friendly and we met some great people. The restaurant and bar layout is really conducive to conversation and meeting other travelers. If you are the shy type you can hide out as well and just people watch. The grounds were what really WOW-ed me. They are stunning ~ absolutely gorgeous! Any landscape gardener would be in awe of their combination of color, texture, size etc. It was perfectly balanced - eye candy!
The beach behind the Hotel was also wonderful. They have hammocks everywhere as well as tables and chairs. Not many people actually write much about this beach, but we thought that it was spectacular! It seemed like a private beach, just for hotel guests so you felt very safe. And the bar was close by.
Another surprise was how close to PV it is. For some reason I expected it to be farther. That was a big bonus. PV is a great place to go during the day or for dinner but coming back to this little safe haven always felt good. It is also a great location if you want to go up to Cahuita or the Sloth Sanctuary.
It was sad to leave - but we will be back!

We had a very nice welcome from the owner (with drink); a fantastic room with large balcony, very romantic.
The only time we were a bit dissapointed was when we went to the restaurant a bit late (7.15) and almost all the food was eaten allready. Just go in time, the food is great.
Lovely hosts, great cocktails!

Thanks for your great review. We also appreciate your feedback.

Your mention about our restaurant running out of food at such an early hour is not the first time we have heard this recently.

It seems with the postive experiences regarding our quality and price of our meals, we have had more customers then usual and the kitchen staff has not adjusted for this change in number of persons anticpated for dinner.

We are currently reviewing our restaurant sales and talking with our kitchen in hopes of improving this issue.

We are glad that despite this, you had a good stay.

Our room (The Howler Suite) on the second floor sea-side corner of this enchanting little 14 room hotel on the Caribbean coast was cooled by gentle sea breezes. From our window and balcony we had views of both the swimming pool in the garden and the beach. The staff was wonderfully helpful accommodating. This hotel is off the beaten track but an easy five minutes from town via taxi or 20 minute walk along the beach. It was a great jumping off place from which to visit the Cahuita Nat'l Park and Manzanillo Refuge.
The on-site, Gecko Trail Adventures travel agency was an added bonus. Gecko Trail, particularly Maythe, was exceptional in helping us arrange the details of our two week vacation in Costa Rica.

Even though it rained almost the whole time I really enjoyed this place. Our sloth cabina was super cute, there was a great view, close to the beach, super yummy food and the staff was extremely friendly. I would love to go back!
