“My idea of a nightmare...”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2011

I am stumped by the other reviews. This place is my definition of hell.

Our bathroom was filthy with mould and hair on the complimentary soap. The shower and bathroom was very damp. I understand we are in the jungle but we stayed 2 weeks in this area and this is the only hotel where we had an issue.

The mosquito net had holes in it, the window screens were unsealed to up to 3cm and there was a gap between one of the outdoor walls and the roof which means we woke up every morning eaten up by mosquitoes and with bugs inside the mosquito net. This is not surprising as there was a lot of stagnating water outside our accommodation. I hope they will use the low season to fix this but I doubt it as the hotel is not managed by the owners anymore.

Maureen and Jake were very nice and did their best to make us enjoy our stay however, they do not know the region and do not speak spanish although they have been here for a few months and cannot recommend you places or help you book tours. I can see from more recent reviews that they seem to know the area now. At last!

The accommodations are also very close to loud local neighbours that were putting the radio at max volume from 7 AM.

I guess that the land around the hotel is a dream and so are the beaches but this place is not homely and really makes you feel like a tourist. I can recommend two other places in this area:
Korrigan lodge is amazing and a bit further away in Cahuita Coral Hills Bungalows is a very homely place.

I hesitated to write this negative review considering the very nasty reply from the owners of the last negative review back in March...

Room Tip: Do not take the butterfly room.

Hello,
We would like to introduce ourselves as the new owners of Tierra de Suenos Lodge. I have read your review and feel that it has put a very negative twist on what should be expected in the Jungle. I am from canada and my first visit to Costa Rica was a bit shocking as well. My Husband and I stayed at many places all across Costa Rica as we travelled to try to find an excellent location for us to purchase. In our travels we encountered a LARGE variety of species living within the lodges, houses and hotels that we stayed in. The Coach Roach otherwise know as the Blattaria or Blattodea were seen everywhere. If we look into the common areas at which one of these insects will live its in warm climates and wooded areas. Which is one of the main reasons you will find this insect in Costa Rica. So it is no surprise that you did encounter this insect at Tierra de Suensos Lodge which is surronded by and situated in a very large jungle area. I like many do not like to encounter them but fortunately and unfortunately this is one of the insects that you may encounter. I say fortunately as they are also a large reason why you may not see other insects in your room. They feed on insects that could be a pain like mosquitos. Mosquitos like living in Northern Ontario are just apart of the wooded, water area. Within our lodge we do have nets that are replaced often. The mosquitos will find a way in if they want, and they do. The netting is there to help but it to can be affected by the moisture of the climate.

As anyone who has visited Costa Rica the climate is moist and somedays extremely wet. This is what this amazing nature needs to stay as beautiful as it does. The nature in Costa Rica is one of its main drawing features to tourists from all across the world. The trees, flowers, animals and insects are why Costa Rica is one of the largest growing tourist destinations. So, if you are coming to Tierra de Suenos Lodge, or any lodge you can expect to feel moisture in your clothes, beds, towels and in general everywhere. However, we do our best to accomidate our cleints and offer fresh towels and sheets if they do not wish to follow the eco tourism policy we have inplace to help protect our enviornment.

Tierra de Suenos lodge is run by our family so this means that we are dedicated to making each cleints stay as comfortable as possible. As you can see by the many good reviews our staff are very knowledgeable of the area as they are from Puerto Viejo. They also speak English, Spanish, French and Arabic. So they can accomidate many people in some of the most common languages spoken who have travelled to our Lodge.

We apologize for you past experience and your run in with the Costa Rican habitat, but, I believe that everyone travelling to Costa Rica should be aware of the climates, nature and all of the hidden pleasures that it brings.

Pura Vida,
New Owners of Tierra de Suenos Lodge

My husband and I spent 4 nights here in the beginning of September. We had a GREAT time. The rooms were nice and clean, the hosts (Jake and Maureen) were wonderful - very friendly, accommodating, and helpful, with lots of suggestions on places to see/eat, etc. We loved being in the jungle among the sloths and howler monkeys! It was so nice to be so close to the beaches too…Punta Uva was definitely our favorite.

I’m not sure why some reviewers think the reception area is awkward with the hosts there most of the time (it is basically their office). We probably wore out our welcome hanging out in the reception area, we were there so much! It was fun visiting with the other guests, and Maureen & Jake. If anything I definitely thought it added to the experience!

We spent the next 3 nights of our trip in Panama (Bocas Del Toro). It was a fun experience as well (I am glad we checked it out), but I think if I were to visit again I’d stay in Puerto Viejo! Some of the activities we did in Costa Rica included the canopy tour, Jaguar Rescue center, and we also did a half day in Manzanillo and took a boat tour of the coast, it was soooo beautiful! Definitely recommend taking a boat tour!

Thanks again Jake & Maureen! We will be recommending Tierra de Suenos to all our family & friends back home :). We really appreciate the hospitality and hope we can come back to Costa Rica soon!

We stayed at this nice place mid September 2011. The place seems well run, clean, they made our rooms daily, breakfast was decent, Jake was helpful with his tips on surrounding beaches, etc.......The bungalows are nicely decorated, there is a mosquito net, which is a must in the jungle. The whole experience was very positive indeed. If there is any downside, the managament uses the cooking area for themselves, which can be somewhat akward if you need to prepare anything, but at the same time though it brings everyone together. If you like this sort of experience, highly recommendable!

We stayed here for 8 days in September for our honeymoon and couldn't have been happier with our choice! Jake and Maureen, along with Lorena & Alex really make your stay special and feel like you're at home- in the jungle. From their great breakfast every morning to tips on what to do and where to eat, its like having a personal guide to the area. We stayed in the Zen Garden and the second floor balcony makes for exceptional monkey & sloth viewing and there is a gorgeous beach just steps away from the property that even on a 'crowded' day, had less than 10 people within view.

You're definitely in the jungle there so be prepared for hot sun, high humidity, bugs and early wakeup calls by the howler monkeys & other jungle life- all of which adds to your experience of the area but if any of this sounds unappealing, it may not be the area for you.

While there, we did a few excursions & tours; Jaguar Rescue tour and Canopy tour are highly recommended. We also did the Bocas del Toro excursion (2 day) in Panama for snorkeling and that was fun but too short. In Panama, we stayed at the Playa Tortuga resort and did the 1 day dolphin/snorkeling tour but due to heavy rain, were unable to hit all of the sites (Red Frog Beach, Starfish Beach, etc.) yet still had a great time.

Jake and Maureen were extremely accommodating and as mentioned previously, had great suggestions for meals. There are several restaurants within walking distance of the property and we'd recommend Jungle Love, Pura Gula, Pita Bonita & Punta Uva Lounge for affordable and delicious meals. If you go into town (Puerto Viejo proper) Parcecito and El Dorado had great food as well. There are many options to choose from in the area and you wont be disappointed.

One thing to keep in mind when booking your trip is to take the travel time from SJO to the Caribbean coast into account- if you travel by car/bus it truly takes 5 hours, without stopping from the SJO airport to Puerto Viejo. If you plan to drive both ways, you may want to book 2 extra days for your overall trip to make up for the time spent getting to the area; we drove out there (transfer booked through Geko Trails) and ended up changing our transfer back to a charter plane because of the time it takes to drive. On a separate note, the charter plane with Carmon Air, from Limon to San Jose was amazing! It is worth the extra money for the time saved and experience, without a doubt.

There is so much more I could say about this property and overall area but will let you experience it for yourself. Highly recommended and we will be back!!

My husband and I stayed here for a week and had a great time. TDS is in Playa Chiquita which was by far our favorite beach out of the four we visited. The bungalows were very nice and it was so fun being in the jungle and going to sleep to true jungle noises every night. The hosts, Maureen and Jake, were so nice and helpful and fun to hang out with. They have two dogs who were so cute and friendly, and really helped me get my dog fix everyday!

My girlfriend and I stayed here for a week and couldn't have been happier. Jake and Maureen, the couple who run the place, were incredibly hospitable, inviting and they make a mean breakfast which I miss already.

We really like the bungalow too.

It's in the jungle so if you can't handle that you might want to look into other places. You are surrounded by beautiful rain forest and the grounds keeping is pretty immaculate.

Playa Chiquita, where they are located, is the best place to stay in the Puerto Viejo area too. It is walking distance to the best beaches and some great restaurants.

Can't say enough good things about this spot.

We miss it already and can’t wait to go back! My wife and I stayed for two weeks at Tierra De Suenos for our honeymoon. This was just what we needed after our wedding. We couldn’t have picked a more magical place. It felt like home. Very cozy.

We stayed in the Zen Garden two-story bungalow, which had a kitchen for convenience on those nights we chose not to bike into Puerto Viejo for food. Plus, being vegetarian we weren’t sure of the local cuisine, which we were surprised to find had a lot of options to eat out. We rented bikes while there which made it easier to get around. The owners and staff were very accommodating and friendly. The property was well taken care. You could tell they put a lot of love into maintaining the place. It was truly enchanting. Awakening to the howler monkeys every morning reminding you of the surrounding jungle was amazing. We looked forward to breakfast on the patio every morning. The food and coffee were delicious. The fresh fruit was the best we’ve ever tasted. After we returned from our morning adventures we found our bungalow always clean and the beds made. The first week it rained around sunset for an hour or two providing a much needed relief. We found the rain very refreshing after a hot humid day.

If you stay here you should go horseback riding with Bruce, who owns a stable just down the road called Playa Chiquita Riding Adventures. We did a nice sunset ride on the beach and he provided interesting conversation. There are also several restaurants within walking distance. We recommend eating at La Biela, La Botanica Organica and Jungle Love.

We found ourselves spending a lot of time in the hammocks on the second floor of our bungalow enjoying the beautiful surroundings after a day at the beach. This was a great time of the year for us, since we prefer less crowds. The beach was only a five minute walk and mostly deserted this time of year. The beach in Playa Chiquita was beautiful. We felt like we were on a deserted island. The jungle path led us right to the beach. Lots of crabs along the path too. There was just jungle, sand and water along the entire coast line. No big hotels to ruin the view. This is the perfect place for those who like to get away from the busy city life. We recommended this to all our friends and family.
