“Return Visit - Even Better”
Reviewed 3 December 2010

Visited Tierra de Suenos again after 2 years in which I visited many other locales and establishments. While Tierra de Suenos and Playa Chiquita have evolved (a great, bright, new Reception building; larger number of staff to assist guests; more restaurants and activities in the area), the fundamentals are still there - kind, personalized service; beautiful rooms in the jungle with all of nature's little blessings and challenges; gorgeous beaches; memorable activities; fantastic hosts and delicious breakfasts.

Looking forward to a third visit in 2011!

A small bit to add to a pretty comprehensive set of reviews:

The locations is ideal for outdoor adventures, very close to the best beaches, fair snorkeling and the highest rated eateries (other than the ones in Puerto Viejo). The location is ideally half way between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo, easily bike-able, although biking into Puerto Viejo for evening hours is a bit sketchy as the roads are narrow and poorly lit. The Jaguar Rescue center is nearby and the tour companies will pick up at the hotel. A small grocery next door has the essentials (cold beer), and a bigger comprehensive one is a ten minute bike ride further.

The units are beautiful and immaculate. My wife fell in love with the beautiful hardwood and 'theming,' (ours had butterfly motifs). We had no issues with bugs and saw none of the expected tropical creepy-crawlies. There is a room safe for valuables. The bathroom was nice and clean and offered plentiful hot water. Christian and the staff were very helpful and accommodating (even getting us an extra early wake-up for our departure). We came back via a Pacuare raft tour (a must-do in my opinion), which works out to be a great bargain as it included the transfer back to San Jose.

Within yards of the place (or on-property) we saw howler monkeys, two- and three-toed sloths, toucans and lots other great birds. The nature aspect won't disappoint. If you are the type that loves nature and shudders at the words "all-inclusive," you'll love this place.

You get what you sign up for here - which is a very authentic Caribbean feel for Costa Rica: no a/c, bugs, lots of rain, and very little commercialization. We LOVED it!

Breakfast was good but the coffee was so-so. The owners were friendly and helpful. Our cabin was a slice of jungle life. A couple of recommendations though -- because the cabins are fairly close to one another, small children, particularly babies and toddlers, should not be allowed. We were not too thrilled to be awoken by a baby when we were expecting monkeys to do so. Also, it'd help to have the sheets replaced daily as they get rather damp with all the humidity. That, or our sheets were replaced with clean wet ones!

I decided to travel to Costa Rica because I wanted a vacation that offered access to the beach as well as opportunities for adventure and exploration. Tierra de Suenos was the perfect place to stay for both.

Location:
The lodge sits on a main road in the town, which makes it easy to go into Puerto Viejo or to bike to some of the area's main attractions, like the Jaguar Wildlife Center or a number of great local restaurants. The lodge is also located a short walk or bike ride away from many of the Southern Caribbean coast's most beautiful beaches. This made it easy to go for a quick swim between activities without having it cut into the rest of my day.

Accommodations:
The lodge is best suited for those who want to be close to nature and really experience jungle life. Guests are housed in bungalows, many of which are named after the wildlife you will likely encounter during your stay. On my first night at the lodge, I fell asleep to the sounds of crickets chirping and rain pattering on my rooftop, and I felt more rested the next day than I had in weeks. Usually, hotels where I stay on vacation are just places to crash at the end of the day, but my stay at TdS definitely added to my overall Costa Rica experience.

Service:
The service was excellent. The staff cooked delicious meals and kept my bungalow clean and comfortable. Christian, the temporary manager, was very friendly and helpful during my stay. He gave me good advice on tours to book (I recommend the canopy ziplining tour) and places to eat (La Biela, which is right next door, is wonderful), and I never had trouble getting around or finding things to do/see.

Lovely little cottages, and freshly cooked breakfast everyday. The reception staff were helpful in suggesting activities and there is lots to pick from - yoga, rafting, day trips, chocolate factory, animal sanctuary, diving and surfing all near by! The hotel is well situated a short distance from town, enough to offer the relaxed oasis we so desperately needed but short enough to nip into town for a meal or drinks.

A friend and I spent five days at Tierra de Suenos this October, splitting the spacious and comfortable Casa Colibri ("Hummingbird," I learned). I'd never been to the area and was blown away by the natural beauty of the landscape and the wildlife. (We saw lizards, snakes, howler monkeys--who occasionally get a little loud during what humans might consider sleeping hours--and a variety of birds, not to mention the hotel's adorable dogs, Ginger and Cody.)

Tierra de Suenos is not a luxury resort by any means. No A/C, no TV. But we never had any problems with the showers or the bathrooms, and felt safe and comfortable both in our rooms and in the main areas. The daily breakfast was delicious, and it's an easy bike ride up the road to a grocery store if you want other food (there is a small refrigerator in Casa Colibri) and a lovely 30-minute ride into Puerto Viejo for more varied options. The beaches are a 3 minute walk from your door, and they are pristine.

I'd go back in a minute. And unless you're looking to be waited on hand and foot, I'd recommend the place to anyone.

Tierra del Suenos was the perfect choice. Great accommodations and staff with a beautiful beach right across the street. There's no better place to stay in the area.
