We reseved a private bath and room for only 40 USD per night two weeks ahead of
arrival and were delighted to get a prompt and very nice answer. Communication
in advance with owner Almut was always friendly and we were really excited to
get there. At arrival they let us park our rental car inside the patio so it
would be safe. They also were very helpful and arranged an earlier pick-up for
the car with the alamo station in San José since they were fluent in spanish
and we were not. They had enough to handle on that one and we felt very much
taking care off. The place altough not beachfronted is very nice and clean. It
has an open patio an terrace with hammocks to rest in and a seperate smoking
area. The owners as well as the receptionist were always polite and directly
explained everything including the area of Viejo to us. We felt very safe even
in this sometimes not so safe described town. Also we cannot agree with some of
the reviews since there were guests from the US, South America and other
countries we must say that every guest even the ones that were declined a room
only due to the full occupancy of the hotel were treated equally and always
friendly. Of course every hotel has its rules, without them it would be anarchy
or better said if you like no rules you should go to other places but should be
warned that it might be noisy all night and you will definitely get mugged
then. We never had the feeling to be treated as kids, but to be taking care of
in a very friendly and outgoing way. The room was spotless, the bathroom
beautiful and all was renovated. It s probably the best and safest place to
stay in Viejo and you will enjoy a good nights sleep because of its location.
It never harms to walk 5 minutes in your life to get to town and walk them back
as long as you know you will get a quiet night for this in return. We recommend
this place to anyone who can stick up to some very usual not overly uptight
rules and who enjoys a very friendly atmosphere as well as a good night sleep.
We will definitely come back.

Hotel Pura Vida is gorgeous and very well-kept. My boyfriend and I (33 and 26) went toward the end of January and stayed 5 nights in one of the $40 private bathroom/balcony rooms. For the cleanliness of the place and the helpfulness of the staff, this was a steal.

Yes, there are a couple of rules to follow, but that's because the owners live on the premises and you are essentially being welcomed into their home. They make an effort to take care of their home for you and for themselves, so we saw this as a plus. Example: no shoes on the wooden stairs or hallways - this is to ensure the beauty and life of the wood (if you saw the wood you would understand - it's beautiful and they'd like to keep it around for as long as possible). This is the same reason you are not allowed to hang towels on the railings. They kindly provide covered clotheslines for you to dry your things (which is better anyway since it rains so often). Almut, one of the owners, was incredibly welcoming and showed us how to get anywhere we wanted and provided us with maps. She spoke perfect English which was super helpful. She also let us store our rented bikes inside the locked driveway during the day and at night. We saw less of Luis, the other owner, but my boyfriend tells me he was very friendly as well. The laundry service was awesome. Have your clothes to them by 8 in the morning and they would be done and in your room by 2 in the afternoon, folded and everything. The location was fine with us. It was on a dark street that was a few blocks away from the main drag, but not dangerous by any means. We loved this hotel and would definitely go back.

If you're spoiled rotten and above respecting other peoples' property and rules, then you should probably find a ritzier place anyway. This place is for the laid back, grateful type.

After we did Not get a Room at The place we had planned, we where almost disappionted. But than He have us The Tip of pura vida. And we loved it from The beginning. We had a very nice, spacious Room with a Lot of light and a Shared bathroom, to Be Shared with One Other Room, which was Not a Big deal For us. The Whole atmosphere is very nice at pura vida. We immidiately felt Welcome and that didn't Change over The Next days as we always Extended our stay. We relaxed in The hemmocks, walked though town and rented Bikes, sat at The Beach and always came back to this Beautiful Place everytime We needed some quiet. We really enjoyed our stay Thanks to Almut and Luis!

My friend and I (mid 20's) decided to stay here instead of one of the hostels nearby. We were very impressed with the lobby and the rooms; we opted for the $40 a night room with the private bathroom and it was nice and very clean. The beds were made and new towels were given each day, which was nice, and the people at the desk were very helpful with things to do in the area.
My only complaints:
1) There were a lot of rules here, and I didn't appreciate the few times they were pointed out to us; they were not explained in the beginning and when the owners saw us breaking them they chastised us and made us feel like children doing something we shouldn't be doing. The woman owner was quite nice, but her husband was not very friendly and only spoke to us when he was chastising us about their many rules.
2) The window in the shower is just mesh wire with half of it covered, but when you are showering the covered part doesn't quite go high enough and we both felt very uncomfortable showering since people could definitely see us showering if they looked at the right moment.
Overall, however, it was a nice hotel and worth the price. Good location too, off the main street so you could get some sleep at night.

(Travel group was 3 Americans in our late 20s). We rented 2 rooms at the hotel, each had a double bed and single bed with mosquito nets. There is a choice of ensuite bathroom or shared bathroom. The hotel is very clean and quiet (except for a nearby rooster, but this occurs at most hotels around town). Hotel has free wi-fi, plenty of hammocks for lounging, breakfast (for low charge). It is 2 blocks away from the main street in town, 5 minutes to the beach, across the street from a soccer field.

Recommend for couples, families, backpackers who want a clean, nice place to stay for little more than cost of hostel. Renting a bike is recommended as a fun and convenient way to travel to beaches like Cocles.

We've spent 3 nights here and just loved it! Had a double room which was georgous, with Moskito - nets on the beds. We had a shared bathroom which was clean and spotless, there are doubles with private bathroom, too. For an extra fee u can have an excellent breakfast. The owners are very helpful, they speak german, english and spanish, and can advice u the best spots to see in Puerto Viejo. Moreover, the place was quiet, and, as it is fenced, also a safe place to stay!!

Location: 3 (short) blocks from "downtown" but that made it quiet.
Honesty: Superior - I left $110 in my laundry and it was handed back to me.
Facility: Locked in with keys for in/out access. Felt very safe.
Atmosphere: Felt like we were invading their privacy. Don't move furniture cushions or try to eat at the "sacred table" or you'll get a time out. I gave it a very good rating but Americans were distinctly treated in a less friendly manner than Europeans and Canadians by the owners - night staff was friendly. That's not just us, an American couple we talked with there felt the same. No place for teenagers.
