“Fabulous setting away from it all though rooms smaller than elsewhere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2013

We enjoyed being away from town in this lodge but I agree you do have to bear in mind the cost to and from town by boat and a little bit of hanging around for a boat. That said we loved having the pool to cool off in and my 2 teenage boys enjoyed the kayaks for a bit of exploring. There were tree frogs and "blue jeans" frogs and a tarantula visible daily 3-4metres from our room! Food was typically Costa Rican, generous, with good service. The room for 4 of us was smaller than elsewhere in CR and a bit dark. The separate cabins looked nicer if there are only 2 of you.
We used Abel Dioz Bonge as our guide who was charming, knowledgeable and fun- Tortugueroguide@mail.com or abelDioz1978@Hotmail.com- we saw much more with a guide on canoe and on foot than we would otherwise have done.

The Rana Roja Lodge is one of the better options if you want to experience the forest. The rooms are simple with net windows. The rooms are clean, but being that you are staying in the middle of the forest it is to be expected that you'll have some insect critter friends to deal with. There is a fan in the room, but no A/C. The property is lovely and surrounded by forest and wildlife. We saw birds, a sloth, butterflies, and some really neat plants. The food at the lodge is average and pricey. Breakfast was included but lunch and dinner were $15 each per person. The breakfast fare was decent with tasty fresh fruit and coffee, but lunch and dinner were average (and that is being kind). I think they charge you $15 because it's a $3 per person taxi ride to the village so if you're traveling as a couple just to get to the village and back is $12. On the other hand, to help compensate for blah food, they do allow you to use rubber boots and kayaks at no charge. The rubber boots are requirement to get into the national park so you save some cash on not having to rent the rubber boots. As I mentioned earlier the property the lodge is on is pretty great so you can't leave without checking out the trail that's on the property. We enjoyed it more than the trail at the national park.

If I'm fair our experience at Rana Roja was pleasant but I must mention our 2 biggest gripes - which is why were not as generous with our rating. The mattresses are really flimsy and sink in which caused my partner some back pain. The water pressure is pretty much nonexistent. You have to press yourself on the wall to get the water on you. The water temperature was good though - not too hot, not too cold. My partner feels that the rooms at Rana Roja are "over glorified hostel type rooms in the middle of the jungle." If you're expecting a hotel or resort type experience then consider staying elsewhere. If you want a nature experience but not have to deal with camping than this is as good as it gets!

Room Tip: There are free-standing bungalows and there are regular rooms. The bungalows are more expensive so b...

Spacious, clean and lovely cabinas surrounded by what seems to be a secondary forest, with cappucin monkeys and many frogs around you. We spotted 3 different frog species just near our cabina, and there are probably more.
The breakfast was good and generous.
The service was very warm and patiant, even when dealing with a mistake in our reservation.
The place is located outside the VERY little town of Tortuguero, so it's more peaceful and no loud music or people around. But, the only way to get to the village is to take a taxi-boat (3$ per person one way). The ride takes only a couple of minutes and is quite fun, but it adds at least 6$ per person a day. We really enjoyed our stay, so it was worth it.

When coming to Tortuguero, you can ask the captain of the boat from La pavona to drop you off in Rana Roja, instead of going to the village and taking a taxiboat.

Stayed here for two days. I found the setting really beautiful. Property is well maintained. Pool area is fantastic. Food was basic and ok. No fine dining here. Free wifi. I thought the trip was well worth it. Takes a good 3 hrs from Siquirres (van/ 1.5 hr boat ride)! A short boat ride to Tortugero town. I wouldn't have booked it had I known it wasn't turtle nesting season...which in my opinion is the highlight of going to Tortugero...but definitely worth it for the experience and canal setting.

I have nothing but great things to say about this little lodge. A beautiful spot with charming little cabins, nice extras (like free boots, kayaks,a swimming pool, etc.), and a great opportunity to spot local wildlife - we saw frogs, lizards, monkeys, sloths, anteaters and birds of all variety. Staff was warm, courteous, and very helpful. Our room was well maintained, and I appreciated the fresh towels after bathing or swimming.

The only thing I would recommend is a few more hangers or pegs to allow things to dry in the cabins. It would also be great to have a clothes line near the sunny pool area - just to dry things out after a brief rain shower.

Excellent surprise in the middle of the rainforest. Simple and clean accomodations where you can fall asleep listening to all the nature sounds (cabins have no glass windows, only nets). In lodge area you can find lots of monkeys, sloths and the "rana roja". That said, if you are not into nature, maybe not your kind of place. You need to take a taxi boat to Tortuguero village (3 min).

We stayed for four nights/three days in January.
It started excellently with a chilled watermelon drink and warm welcome from Daniel on arrival.

I can echo what everyone has said about the location and wildlife in the grounds - lots of monkeys, including howlers on the roof and capuchins on the walkways, toucans in the trees, hummers, trogans, a red-eyed tree frog etc.Fabulous. Yes a lovely pool too.

We also had a great day taking a couple of the hotel kayaks up the river to San Francisco and would have used them more had we stayed longer. We did not use other tours booked from the hotel so cannot comment on these.

The cabins are very nice and the only bug we found inside was a huge ant. No mossies. Luckily the song of the jungle blocked out some of the noise from the bar, but room 32 is very close to the amenities and because of the mesh windows, you can basically hear everything. On our last night is was if the band was in the bedroom and in the mornings noise from the kitchen (pots)and dining room (scraping chairs) was loud too. Luckily the howlers drowned it out most of the time. If you get to choose I think I eyed up cabin 35 as being the most desirably located in terms of peace (from human noises!)

I would say the service was very patchy. There was a day when our room was not cleaned - which could happen anywhere. What really grated was the attitude of the cleaner who was very rude and utterly denied it when we told the manager. Mistakes happen, but rudeness is not a great thing in a hotel. The managers, Chris in particular and Daniel were couteous and helpful (particularly in drying our stinky wet shoes and clothes after a rainy rainforest trip) as was Miguel at the bar. However the level of staffing is low. We had a key problem one night and basically by 7.30pm Miguel and the night watchman appeared to be the only staff on site.

We had dinner the first night and were very disappointed - how they justify US$15 per head for spaghetti you serve yourself I do not know. The dining room has no atmosphere and with prompt service swapping our dinner plates for pudding - a small inedible cake - dinner was over in a scant 15 minutes. Maybe we weren't helped by two of us being seated at a round table for 6-8 beside the kitchen area (Fluorescent lights) and buffet. Nevertheless apart from breakfast (which was fine) we did not eat there again. Even with the water taxi fare (US$3 per person each way so US$12) we could have a couple of beers and a delicious meal in the village for less than the US$30 two hotel dinners would cost (plus US$4 for each beer at the pool bar...). It is a shame the food and drink feels like a rip off - we had much much better food in roadside cafes! Unremarkable food is acceptable if the price matches but it didn't. If they could get this balance right it would be a so much nicer place to stay.

Room Tip: Room 32 is right next to the pool bar and restaurant
