As I told the manager at Tortuga Lodge, the properties were even more beautiful than the website portrayed. Everything was so well-maintained, clean, and delightful. We were amazed that, with all of the humidity, there was no mildew smell or signs of deterioration anywhere. Everything looked brand new and perfect. We were surprised and delighted by the little touches, like the fruit drinks brought to us as we stepped off the boat from the tour, and the glasses of wine for us in our room the night before we left Tortuga, etc. The staff was very professional and kind, making sure that we were well taken care of.

We planned our trip with Costa Rica Expeditions which did a fantastic job in every respect. After a wonderful raft trip, we spent three nights at Tortuga Lodge in early February 2012 where the staff, lodging, food and naturalist experirnces with Angelo as our guide were perfect. We saw many new birds and some who migrated from New England. It was a great start to our trip. We cannot recommend Tortuga Lodge and its friiendly, knowledgeable staff highly enough.

Tortuga Lodge, set right on the river and just across the airstrip from the beach, is just a magical place to stay. All of the staff were very accomodating. Naturalist boat drivers were outstanding - thanks Angelo and Luis. What an outstanding spot for our last 2 days in costa rica!

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms have better cooling breeze!

I just read the previous review and remember the family of 7. I recall watching Sylvia and the rest of the staff watching the 2 year old while the family was gone and was so impressed with the way the child was treated. Tortuga Lodge was a delightful way to begin our 10 day visit to Costa Rica. The food and accommodations were wonderful and I'll never forget my first sightings of toucans and a sloth from my balcony. To wake up to the sound of howler monkeys is an unforgettable experience. We arrived by boat and were immediately sat down for lunch when a strong wind and rain arrived. It was so impressive to watch the staff react to this mild crisis and everyone just joined in and made the best of it. A few minutes later everything was back to normal. I am vegetarian and worried about what awaited me but I was so thrilled with the food that was presented at every meal. It was a much better experience than I've had here in the U.S. They were creative and very understanding about it and I never even had to mention it once. Costa Rica Expeditions had arranged that all ahead of time.

Room Tip: We loved our room on the upper floor.

After arriving at the airstrip, we were greeted by the hotel staff for the 2 min journey across the river to the lodge. Fresh fruit cocktails greet you each time you arrive at the dockside.
The staff at the lodge are really nice - always helpful, genuine and friendly.
We had two rooms and preferred the one on the first floor which was more private. Lovely maid and laundry service.
The food and drinks were great and we loved the proximity to the river.
We had two private kayak sessions and one private boat trip - all were excellent and we would recommend not going in a group as the silence and personal proximity to nature is an important part of the experience. Try to walk behind the lodge - so many poison dart frogs - truly amazing - just remember the deet under your clothes as the Mosquitos get everywhere! Also see the sloth, birds and iguanas in the gardens - a real treat!

Room Tip: Try a first floor room rather than ground floor - more private and view is better

My family of Seven (five children ranging from 2-13) had the pleasure of staying at Tortuga Lodge for three unforgettable nights. From start to finish the experience was amazing. We read great reviews of the lodge from Tripadvisor. we were not let down in the least. In fact, the lodge exceeded our expectations.

We took a beautiful plane ride from San Jose to the landing strip just across the river to the Lodge. We were warmly greeted by the Hotel staff who were amazing to all of us for our entire stay.

The meals are excellent. They proposed children meals but our kids loved the meals served for adults. It was fresh local food and delicious!

The setting is truly spectacular. You are in the middle of the rain forest! There is a nature trail on the grounds with outstanding wildlife. The birds, iguanas, monkeys, frogs are all seen on the grounds.

The tours that the hotel offers are equally wonderful. The guides are all very knowledgeable. We really enjoyed Luis, our tour guide who was great with the kids.

We also went to the local school to help with an English class. It was a great experience for the whole family. Natalie, the English teacher is very good and really enjoys when guests, particularly children are interested in volunteering.

Of course, our two year old was not able to do all activities with us. This was no problem. Sylvia, the assistant manager who is wonderful with children watched him for us.

Thank you to all the wonderful staff for giving our family memories that will last a life time.

Dear eeggkrings,

Your review of Tortuga Lodge & Gardens made me smile! I am delighted that you and your family had such a special experience at the lodge.

I was especially happy to see how much you got out o the Word Adventure experience. Did you know that when we first started the program we only had 9 students? Today there are 43 students ages ranging from 7-23. The program has been so successful that we know of cases where kids are have actually moved from other towns so that they can participate.

You mentioned Silvia taking care of your youngest. Our Assistant Manager, Silvia Rankin is the granddaughter of one of the original founders of the village of Tortuguero, the local midwife. She offers a wealth of knowledge about the history and culture of Tortuguero. As you experienced, Tortuguero is definitely the village the raises the children.

We loved having you and your family at Tortuga Lodge and hope that you will visit us again.

Sincerely,

Natalie Ewing

Let me begin by saying, I like my comforts. I went to Tortuguero because my travel companions wanted to go. I liked the idea of living "in the jungle" and being up close to nature, but, was very leery regarding what the accommodations would be like.

Was I surprised!!! Everything was beautiful, clean, and bug-free. The plumbing worked better than the plumbing at home. The food was delicious (I have special dietary needs, and the staff was very responsive to them).

The staff could not have been nicer, or more attentive. For example, when my husband and I wanted to go on a hike into the forest, they provided boots to wear through the muddy muck. Unfortunately, my husband had not brought socks with him. No problems, they located a pair of clean socks for him to wear.

We had a second floor room, which was very pleasant. The raised ceiling gave it a very open feeling.

We arrived by car, and here too I was surprised by the trip. The car portion of the journey from San Jose was very informative and enjoyable, with frequent stops for animal sightings and fruit samples. The boat ride to Tortuga Lodge was an adventure, including a tropical rain shower (ponchos were distributed at the first drops of rain). All in all, it was not a long, boring trip, but a wonderful journey.

We took a plane back to San Jose, which also was a pleasure - smooth, comfortable and not at all small plane scary. Again, I was surprised. All of the transfers, excursions and logistics were handled by Costa Rica Expeditions. They did an outstanding job. Everything was well planned out and worked very smoothly. I would not think twice about doing another excursion with them.

Room Tip: Go for the second floor
