Food freshly cooked and great quality. Staff exceptionally friendly, Rooms superb.its a pleasant luxury not a plastic one. They go the extra yard to make you feel welcome, remembering your names.
The road trip was very bumpy for about an hour to get to the dock for the 1.5hr boat trip to reach the hotel. I would probably go that way in and fly out to save half a day.

My wife and I traveled to Tortuguero and the Hotel Manatus as our first stop on a two-week trip to Costa Rica that began on February 25th. It was my wife’s first trip to Costa Rica and my fourth. We also stayed at El Silencio Lodge, Hotel Punta Islita, and Hotel Grano Del Oro, all of which I will review subsequently.

We flew into San Jose on AA and opted to pay the extra $200 per ticket for business class. This was a very smart move. The flight was perfect and an excellent value. The time went by quickly and we arrived refreshed from New York around 9 pm local time. We stayed at the airport hotel and were at Nature Air the next morning at 6 am for our flight to Tortuguero. We arrived at 6:30 and were whisked to our hotel by boat for a three-night stay.

My first question upon arrival was whether there was a pharmacy in town. It turned out that there wasn't one. Despite carefully counting out my numerous diabetes medications before traveling, I somehow failed to pack two of them. This could have been a personal disaster, but instead, Rafa, who was the hotel manager that morning, called a connection in San Jose. Five minutes later, he informed me that the meds I was missing would arrive on the incoming flight the next morning. This service literally saved my life, and it only got better from there!

Since it was now 7 am or so and check-in was not until noon, we had breakfast, and then Rafa asked us to use a room above the office to relax and unwind until our room would be ready. We were very impressed with this, however once we saw that the room was actually his personal accommodations, we returned downstairs and let him know that we couldn't intrude on his personal space adding that the offer was truly remarkable.

We went to the balcony above the boathouse and stretched out in the fresh air until our room was ready. I think it is very important for visitors to Tortuguero to realize just how remote this location actually is. Access is by boat or plane only, and you are not going to find Five Star Luxury accommodations here. That being said, I can tell you I have been to Tortuguero before, and the difference between other properties and the Manatus Hotel is rather staggering.

The room was lovely and air-conditioned. To my knowledge, this is the only air conditioned hotel in the area. The beds were very comfortable and we were very pleased. There wasn't really anything that needed improvement.

The food at the hotel was also excellent when you take into consideration that everything is prepared to order. Again, this sets Hotel Manatus apart from other places to stay in Tortuguero. All the other properties serve buffets for all meals. Over the course of our three days we got to know our servers, Sergio, Jayson, and Moises. They were truly fun, and they made sure everything was prepared to our liking. They even offered and arranged for us to have a special dinner on our last night, based on the typical casado. It was truly impressive, so flavorful, and completely authentic, complete with a fried egg over rice! Don’t knock it until you try it—totally delicious! In short, we knew we weren't in Manhattan, and we loved the food and service!

Since things were going so well, we decided to have massages in our room. We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and it was also an excellent value. Loved it and would have done another if we had more time!

Now for the boat tours of the rivers and canals. I really can't add to all of the other reviews about how beautiful the nature is in Tortuguero in general. Our boat tours were outstanding and it was nice to be on boats that limited the number of passengers to eight. This allowed our guides (Chico and Ray) to give us personal service and answer all of our questions. It was just great!

You should not miss Tortuguero if you go to Costa Rica. It is truly God’s country and will be a highlight of your trip especially if you are there during the turtle nestings during the rainy season. Hotel Manatus is by far your best choice!

Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Roberto and Juanita

Room Tip: All the rooms are the same. We liked our river view.

Our second destination on our Costa Rican tour and it was very memorable. Being transported by river boats to our small hotel and being warmly greeted with a welcome drink on our arrival. The staff were all very friendly especially in the dining area were they went out of there way to accommodate special requests from the menu which was quite varied considering the location. The rooms in the individual cottages were comfortable and set amongst the colourful resort grounds. We saw such a lot on our guided river tours.Sloths, Monkeys, lots of different Lizards,Green Iguanas Tucans, Anhingas etc etc .. an amazing experience to remember always..... I think my only slight criticism would be that the Managers who were regularly seen around the resort and especially in the restaurant in the evening, never introduced themselves or enquired if the stay was going well. Just a personal touch that is always appreciated.

This intimate hotel was nice but the staff and jungle friends set it apart. The dining room team seemed like a comedy crew. Always cheerful, fun and attentive. The food was decent and they had enough options to meet varied tastes. We also really enjoyed our guide Ray, who took us on tours and introduced us to the resident sloth, as well as many other local treasures. Then in the morning we enjoyed wake ups from the howler monkeys. There are limited things to do in this area but it was a very pleasant few days.

We had 2 very enjoyable nights at Manatus Lodge. Everything was very well arranged from the transfer in by combi and boat to the boat trips into the reserve and the room and food. Surprisingly good food for a relatively remote location with no road connection to the outside world. The room was very comfortable with both a shower in the bathroom and one outside (private). Very pleasant staff. We would recommend this hotel to friends and would stay here again ourselves. A good choice by Imagine Latin America and San Germain Tours.

In the north east of Costa Rica, access by boat...no cars! Lovely people who were very friendly and helpful. Food terrific. Saw lots of wildlife there and on trips from there. Monkeys (White faced, Howler and Spider), Cayman, Crocs, poison dart frog, eyelash viper, sloths. This was the best stay of our whole trip.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the river

The first day on our first trip to Costa Rica was greeted with friendly transfer staff from the bus in San Jose right through to the fabulous entrance into Tortuguero by the hotel river boat.....wow!
A friendly greeting with a refreshing drink set us up for a wonderful couple of days to explore the wildlife and relax with friendly staff, good food and a wonderful outlook. A minor hitch with the plumbing was attended to quickly. Thanks to all for a great time!
