You shouldn't expect the Ritz or the Waldorf when you're in the jungle. What we expected was a clean place in an exotic and breathtaking setting, and that is what we got. Lovely pools, decent restaurant, rooms OK (wasn't that hot as we went in early April, but I can imagine it would be stifling in July!) Surrounded by nature--animals (an iguana visited us on our porch!) and greenery. Excellent boat safaris--2 nights and then move on to civilization. Big disappointment was the snippy attitudinal desk clerk who had a hissy fit when we learned at checkout that we had been overcharged at the bar and refused to pay until it had been rectified. Hey, this is the hospitality industry, not the attitudinal industry. Other than that, memorable experience.

Room tip: Think twice about going in the hot season--no AC

The Laguna Lodge caters to organized groups, to the extent that the tables in the dining room are divided by groups, thought the pretty standard but perfectly reasonable food is the same. Service is efficient and courteous. The rooms are clean, good shower and the ceiling fans do their job in the very hot and humid climate.
The grounds offer great attractions, like the oropendola's hanging nets, frogs, iguanas, etc. The beach is 50 meters away is. Don't go into the ocean, was the generalized advise, colored with all kind of horror stories, but just in case, don't. It's not even attractive. We didn't go turtle watching because the chances of seing one was low and the mosquitoes are active. The excursions from the lodge into the canals was great. In general, Laguna Lodge offers what it promisses and is an exelent way for visiting an amazing natural park.

It is a 90 minute boat ride to get to Tortuguero, but the Laguna Lodge is surprisingly well kept for being so far from civilization. They have two nice swimming pools and are only a couple hundred feet from the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean was quite rough, but the pools were great. No A/C or cute little soap and shampoo bottles, but you are surrounded by jungle. The jungle cruises and turtle watching are the reasons to go here.

Room tip: All the rooms seemed pretty much the same. They are one story buildings with about 8 rooms in each building.

Stayed here 2 nights on a tour. I walked around the grounds during the day and was able to view, crocodiles, toucans, iguanas and many other birds. At night was able to see some awsome frogs. The rooms are very rustic but the fan was enough to keep me cool.
