My boyfriend and I went on a daytime canal tour and an evening jungle tour led by Mao, and both were great! I noticed that a previous reviewer mentioned some issues with timeliness and organization, and though it worthwhile to counter with my own experience (we were here for several weeks and went on numerous guided excursions) - It is true that Mao wasn't the most professional operation in terms of punctuality and formality, but I had a much better time (and learned more) on these tours than I did with some of the more sophisticated outfits.
Mao has a real passion for sharing what he knows about the plants and animals in Tortuguero, and as a native of the town, has a lot of interesting background information that gives context to the development of the national park. He's also just a fun guy, with a great sense of humor and a fantastic command of English. The combination of knowledge, language, and comedy makes for a fun day.
For those of you interested in learning about the wildlife in this area, I'd highly recommend Mao. From what I could gather, he seemed to be the best guide there.
(Note: Rainforest Life asked for an upfront deposit to reserve a space in the tour - just wanted to mention this so that readers will be prepared & don't get dissuaded by the request - which was honored when we showed for the actual tour, no problem.)
