“An awesome tor guide”
Reviewed 21 October 2012

Willis was the last tour guide we took during our amazing trip to Costa Rica. Before we called him, we heard excellent recommendations and all the words were true! He's very professional and combines it with being a very funny person! The tour we took from Moin to Tortuguero, the stay at the lodge, the food and the place itself is paradise, but Willis made this adventure the best ending to our amazing time in Costa Rica!

We recently stayed at the All Rankin Lodge as part of a tour of Costa Rica and thought the location was amazing. The view from the open dining area is stunning and great for watching wildlife from the hammocks. The rooms here are ok, the beds are pretty uncomfortable but the white sheets are clean. It's a budget place in the rainforest so it's what you'd expect. The best thing about it (and the thing that makes the ok accommodation worth it) is Willis who leads wildlife boat tours. He is such a lovely guy and his ability to spot a sloth from an impossible distance means you get to see things that would completely pass you by otherwise. He is very knowledgeable and has a great respect for the amazing place in which he lives. Turtles nest within spitting distance of the lodge which makes this place a great location for a wildlife tour. Great.

If you're looking for a fantastic trip to Tortuguero at a great value, look no further than "All Rankin's Tours and Cabinas". We recently traveled to CR with a very loose itinerary, not having any reservations for any adventure.
Knowing we wanted to travel up the canal to Tortuguero, we simply drove to the boat docks in Mion hoping to secure a ride north. Finding the dock was easy and many boat captains were relaxing and socializing near their boats. We were immediately engaged by several of these captains vying for our business, but since we had arrived in the afternoon, they were unwilling to take us to Tortuguero that day at the normal rate of about $50 roundtrip until the next morning, knowing they could fill the boat with more passengers. We had planned on spending two nights there, but planned on finding a hotel once we arrived in the village. Thankfully, Myron (Birdy) approached us and offered to take us to Tortuguero that afternoon if we were willing to accept a two night package that included roundtrip boat ride, lodging, meals, jungle/canal tour and turtle watch beach hike. Cost $170 per person, total $340. We accepted not really knowing what to expect.
It all seemed so informal, handing over such a large sum of cash to a
complete stranger. After committing to the deal, our luggage was loaded
onto the boat and we headed out. After a few minutes of travel, Birdy
informed us that he was going to drop us off at a soda/bar on the river
bank while he went to fill the boat with gas. As we dined on a delicious
plate of rice, beans and chicken, we couldn't help but wonder if we'd ever see him again, but our concerns were unwarranted, Birdy returned to share lunch and a beer with us and we were on our way, heading north on one of the most exotic rivers I've ever experienced. As we traveled north on our three hour ride, we began to journal, listing every animal or bird we sited. Birdy was so skilled at spotting animals we actually ran out of space on our page after writing down so many critters...Caiman, Howler Monkeys, Whiteface Monkeys, birds, Toucans, Jesus Christ Lizards...the list goes on and on. About 3/4 of the way to our destination we stopped at a riverside bar/resort to cool down with an ice cold beer and at the same time Birdy delivered a container of fuel to his friend there (a way of life on the river, everyone helps one another). An hour later we arrived at our camp where the open air restaurant welcomed us near the rivers edge, with the cabinas set father back on the property yards away from the Caribbean/Atlantic ocean, opposite of the river. We were escorted to our simple, but adequate quarters, a three bed cabina with one large area for the bedroom, a bathroom and an attached porch facing the ocean.
Although it was quite hot, the breeze from the ocean was soothing. This
camp is a family run operation and everyone has their duties, and we were treated to a delicious meal of fish, rice, beans and fried plantains
prepared by one of the family members. We dined with a couple from
Canada and several others from CR. After a dreamy nights sleep, we began our boat nature tour the next morning after a wonderful breakfast of eggs, fruit and, yes, beans and rice. Later that afternoon we hiked the mountain near the camp seeing some amazing things, such as a large Green snake feeding on a lizard, along with Poison Arrow Frogs. We ended the evening with a boat ride to the village of Tortuguero to do some souvenir shopping. Our host and guide Donny lead us on a turtle watch hike that last evening, and although we were unsuccessful in spotting any nesting sea turtles, we will never forget the night hike on such a beautiful beach with the full moon lighting our way along with the waves crashing onto the black sand as we walked.
In closing, I cannot think of one moment I'd change about our adventure, it still feels like a dream.
