Surfing with Harley, yoga with Femke and horseriding with Wilbert.
It is such a nice place to relax in a hammock or at the patio. I will defenetly come back to this place if i ever come back to Costa Rica. Thank you Femke and Marijn you guys are the best!!

in a place that has a postcard paradise setting, there's much room for improvement. Trying to manufacturer a 'community' feel, one has to wait for everyone to arrive at the table before eating, sure. a blow of the conch shell signals dinner but when everyone arrives and only speaks dutch, 'community' is not really the vibe.
be prepared to feel a cold shoulder or even feel like an outcast for walking around outside the ranch to seek out your own food instead of paying for theirs.

Apparently theres a waterfall there, maybe you need to be in a group or pay a premium to see it, I surely did not get to see it. after this experience i would never go back

I should start saying I’m from Riviera Maya, Mexico and been in the tourism business all my life, from Luxury boutique resorts to jungle lofts Riviera Maya has it all.
The reason I say this it’s because being use to this kind of environment I was very surprised to find such an epic piece of territory down there at Rancho Burica, Nature at its best, there’s monkeys at the property, slobs, and excellent surf point right in front of the property with no surfers other than your friends staying at the Rancho.
I had a fantastic experience while my energy and my mind where healing from the stressing sounds and images of regular life… jungle sounds, birds, monkeys, waves, frogs; It’s amazing to meet people able to listen to a frog and know what kind of frog it is and then go find it for you… I’m just saying activities are really into the jungle and nature, you are there and you slowly become the environment where you are, so YES definitely a place to stay longer.
A big plus is that Rancho Burica it’s the last property in town and then there is a Reserve that goes all the way to Panama, so really you are where you want to be if you already spend your money and time to go to a green country such as Costa Rica.
The property, kitchen, rooms, bathroom, gardens and general areas are really clean, that place is lucky to be owned by a group of Duch people which enhance the vibe of the place and really preserve the good environment with the staff and local people.
The managers Maijin and Fem are a couple of Duch locals hanging at Punta Banco and Pavones with the community as they are part of it; this increases the experience so much since anywhere you go people welcome you just because your with them, every one so friendly and so nice you really make friends at every place you go. Not as a customer but as Pura Vida like they like to say when they think you’re a really nice person…
The food its schedule for breakfast at 9am all like family, with 3 options of meals at lunch and dinner time around 9pm also as family, it’s just the way the Rancho is. Once you get in schedule I think it’s a lot of food.
I stayed at the Jungle loft, upstairs, 2 beds a fan, a balcony, hammock, sound of monkeys and waves, perfect place to relax, and for the dollar, it’s a really excellent experience.
Things I learned from this trip… You can buy a really nice surf board at the Pavones surf shop for the cost of bring your own board… Next time I will give them a call and purchase one before my arrival to make sure I will have a nice board to surf and avoid the hassle of carrying my own…
If you can rent a car, it does provide for an easy way to move around and experience several surf spots, however thanks to Maijin and Fem I was able to go to different places with no car rental.
At the end fantastic experience, in love with the place and will definitely be back one day!!
Cheers!!!

Some places will stick with you forever. During traveling you always hope to find a place where you plan to stay a couple of days, but if you let them, could stay there for weeks.
This for me is one of them.

I visited the rancho at the end of my two months trip. During this trip I was hoping to find a place where I could stick a bit longer then a couple of days. A holiday in a holiday. I travelled in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, but did’t found a place that grabbed my attention. Sure, if found beautiful places with great waves and people. But somehow my attention faded away after a couple of days. I wasn't planning to go back in Costa Rica because of the prices there, but my flight was from Panama city so I needed an overlay. Through word-to-mouth I discovered the rancho in Pavanos and choose to stay there for my last 6 days.

Now looking back. This was for me the place that I was hoping to find.

Rancho Burica is literally located at the end of a road. It’s is easy to get there. I travelled all the way from San juan Nicaragua to the Ranch in 1,5 day. It was a long journey with in night in Golfito, but i wanted to go south as soon as possible. The ranch itself is right on the beach with an own beach break in front. So for the surfers, vision this: Easy pushing waves (when the tides are right), middle in the jungle, no locals AND not more then the visitors of the rancho in the water. For me, after been surfing in Puerto Viejo, Santa Theresa, Popoyo, Hermosa etc was an bless. I could really train my surf there and it felt like I was surfing with my friends. Btw they have enough boards for every taste.

I slept in the dormitory which consist of 8 beds. I was there in the low season so just had to share the dorm with two other guys. Slept like a baby after a good day of surfing especially with the sound of the waves on the background and in the morning the monkeys. Depending on the tides, you can do a morning session and afternoon one. I choose the backpackers deal. Did means $35 for a bed, breakfast and dinner. Lunch is $5 dollar extra and the board are 10 bucks. Not as cheap as in Nicaragua, but the food quality is really good and it’s still Costa Rica ;-). They do family style breakfast and dinner.

For the none surfers. I did a (4h) horse back riding tour. It was my first experience doing this and I didn’t expect to have so much fun. The horses where well fed and trained properly. this means for me as a rookie, I could climb muddy and steep hills (also descent ;)), galloping and experience the jungle from a horse. I saw a really poisonous snake, which killed by our guide Wilbert, two different types of monkeys, sloths and blue butterflys. The trip was amazing. Would do it again with the blink of an eye.

So. I could go on and one. But the for me the key is: If you want a great place to chill, surf enjoy your book, get sick of grumpy locals, want to practice your surf technique, meet great people and feel the warmth of the hosts Marijn en Femke. Go there and enjoy.

This place I build with love, not to make any profit. As it should be.

Joey
