“The best view in Jaco!!!”
Reviewed 7 December 2013

Hotel Villa Caletas was our first stop on our honeymoon. We stayed in room 16 (honeymoon suite). The views were absolutely breath taking! The room was beautiful, we had our own infinity pool looking over the Pacific which was beautiful! We saw the sunset every night and had breakfast in the amphitheater every morning. The sunsets were amazing, I recommend taking time to go see it every night you are there. There are bugs because it is the rainforest, but as long a you don't keep your bedroom doors open at night they won't make it into the room. There was a family of toucans outside of our balcony which was really cool! Eating at the hotel can get pretty pricey but the views, the food, the drinks and the service are all worth the price. Overall this is a wonderful hotel and we can't wait to visit again! Again, ROOM 16 is awesome!

Room Tip: "Room 16. Infinity pool looking over the pacific = amazing"

My wife and I stayed three nights at Villa Caletas in November 2013 in Room 12. We were both familiar with the area and had visited Jaco before, and my wife was familiar with Villa Caletas, but neither of us had stayed there before. Needless to say, we were both blown away. Our room was very private and had an incredible mountain view of the ocean (many places in the hotel from the beautiful infinity pool to the gym have wide panoramic views of the ocean). The Staff and service at the hotel were phenomenal - each hotel employee that we came across spoke perfect english. We ordered room service once and ate breakfast in one of the restaurants once and were impressed with the food both times. The rooms were cleaned daily and I didn't find even a spec of dust anywhere. Safety was not a concern for us, as each room is not only private, but the hotel is about a 1.5 km hike from the nearest main road. We will be staying here on our next trip to Costa Rica.

The hotel is nice, service is good and very friendly people , food is average. We stayed in the highest cat. room with private pool , number 19. We came to relax and never left the hotel. We only went to breakfast and diner most of the days. We stayed 7 nights in total. But I want to warn everyone that it is not safe to stay in the hotel. We had cash with us in usd, euro and gbp in our safe. We put this in the safe and the safe was closed for 7 days. When we checked out the last day we found that money has been stolen. The strange thing is they took money from every currency, half the USD, GBP and EURO. Asking the reception for camera pictures was not possible. The access to the room is with keys , no card or code for room 19. All the other rooms have cards and no keys.
As we hardly left the room for breakfast or diner (max 2 hours per day) it seems it was organized by the staff and when we were at breakfast or diner someone has been searching in my safe and took money away. We want to warn everyone do NOT leave anything in the safe box as staff can open this box easily. The manager claims he has only 1 key but we do not believe his story at all. We just hereby want to warn future visitors , Villa Caletas is not safe and don't put anything with value in the safe box but keep it with you...all day and night.

Dear Friend, thank you for your comment. I want to put things clear once and for all : "There is only one key for each safe in the hotel." Guest are warned during Check in that there is only one key to open their safe and that we will charge them $60.00 if it is misplaced. If a key is lost we have call a locksmith to drill the safe and install a new one. This operation is overlooked by me personally or by our Maintenance and Security Manager.

That being said, your theory of our staff conspired against you has no relevance at all. I remember you telling me " That the guy cleaning my pool was too friendly..he must be the one that stole my money". Costa Rican people are genuinely friendly and do not spend their time plotting against guests.

I hope you will realize the same way as when we all misplaced something at home and swear that "it was here" and then finding it after in a totally different place that an error was made here and that i and our staff were wrongly accused of some facts that never happened.

We stayed here, somewhat randomly, knowing that we wanted to stay around Jaco, in order to take the boat taxi across to Montezuma. It was an incredible stay. Even the view from the gym was breathtaking! Staff was extremely courteous. Food was delicious (especially breakfast), and again, the views are amazing from every point of the property.

We booked Villa Caletas randomly and were extremely pleased with our decision. The hotel is by far the best views in the area, just breath taking. The staff was very friendly and our room was amazing, far better then we expected! Our rooms were cleaned spotless and every morning the cleaning staff would make animals out of towels to leave on our bed, really made my day. Drinks by the pool were delicious, especially watching the sunset. The only negative thing I can think of is to avoid the hiking trail, there is a reason they make you sign a waiver- however they did warn us. Great place to stay, I'd recommend for sure!

Room Tip: Junior suites come with hot tubs, great for at night!

I am a big fan of Villa Caletas. In fact, i would give weekend certificates as presents to my closest relatives as it was a very nice boutique hotel in Costa Rica, very close to the capital, so it was the obvios weekend choice.

However, this last trip my partner and I did, we were left wanting more. It seems that the owner has lost its touch and has forgotten to invest a bit in the hotel.

We felt that the room was old and things were not working very well... As usual, no electrical sockets nearby... in this day and age... The TV has a long cable and was connected to a socket in the closet... not very tastefully done. The door to the Balcony was stuck... No hangers in the closet... and, given their sustainable policy, I do not know what they use to warm up the water... the thing is that I wanted to use the huge and amazing bathtub to take a nice and relaxing bath, but the water never got warm enough. I called reception and they said they would turn on the water tank to provide warm water. 1.5hours later, not warm enough so I moved on.

The service was good, however, some of the staff was treating us in very friendly terms, in spanish would be in "tu", which we do not use in Costa Rica and usually staff should treat guests in a respectful "usted". Just a small thing but something you except in good service.

breakfast is amazing, in their restaurant with their great view, highly recommended. We ordered room service one night and it was also very good. Bit pricy, but good.

The last thing was when we were going to check out, we were still in our room and the front desk called to asked if we wanted to stay another night, a very polite way of asking "are you leaving now" which i felt was a very good technique.. until the lady kept on explaining that if i am not staying another night, i have to be in the reception in 10mins otherwise my credit card will be "automatically" charged for one more night... That i hate! and I told her on the phone that i would not allow that and made me very mad that a hotel thinks they have the right to do so... even though in Costa Rican law that is not allowed.

Anyway it as a nice romantic weekend for my partner and I, in a hotel that used to be very good, I think it has lost its touch and should reinvest some money in the appearance of the rooms. I do not think i will go back in the near future and instead might try other hotels in the area.

However, if you are going to stay for just one or two nights, and you get a very good offer prices wise, then try it, but do not expect 4 star quality, but you will get your discounted price´s worth. And, the hotel is nice to see and the views are breathtaking. At least go for lunch!

This trip was for our nine-year anniversary and much postponed honeymoon. I have many friends and family that have been to Costa Rica, so my wife and I already had high expectations. Let me just say that our expectations were met and exceeded!
The hotel website states that rooms with ocean view are not guaranteed, but we had hopes. Our initial disappointment in being given Room 21 (actually a separate casa) with "only" a rain forest view was forgotten immediately when within minutes of unpacking and sitting on the patio, two pairs of scarlet Macaws and a pair of Toucans flew by. We also found many gorgeous views of the ocean, just steps from our front door. Our first night, we were able to catch the ocean sunset from the restaurant and it was amazing.
We had a challenging agenda all week long, with lots of physical activities: ATV riding, Canopy zip-lining, horseback riding up the mountain to a waterfall, walking tour of Manuel Antonio National Park and white water rafting. The isolated location of the hotel required lots of $20 cab rides to Jaco, or one and one-half hour tour van rides to Quepos, but the scenery and the guide’s description of the palm oil plantations and history of the area were worth it.
If you don’t mind climbing a few steps through the beautiful gardens to get from your room to the hotel reception or to the restaurant and Infinity pool, this is the place for a beautiful relaxing retreat. The rooms were nice and kept clean by the friendly staff. We had a few minor problems with the TV and hot water, and they were taken care of immediately.
The food is excellent and the restaurant staff are friendly, speak good English and provide top notch service. We ate many a meal in the hotel restaurant and had room service several times – always good!
If you want to step out of your hotel door and walk down a carpeted hall to an elevator that takes you to a typical lobby, then don’t come to the Villa Caletas. If you’re afraid of spiders, don’t come here. By the way, we never had any visitors in our room, but enjoyed watching the banana spiders webs glisten as they caught the setting sun’s rays.
After a week in many different locations and widely varying situations - from ultra nice hotels to beach bars - that the Costa Rican people are genuinely friendly and are proud of their beautiful country. We are already planning to come back for our tenth anniversary!
