“Eat at the restaurant, stay somewhere else.”
Reviewed 14 September 2006

We stayed there for a week. The room was dingy and uncomfortable. The staff was not helpful. We asked the desk to help us get transportation to the airport. They forgot and we almost had to pay $200 to get to the airport. To be fair, they finally found us an affordable ride but we had to stick around the hotel for hours trying to figure out the details.

The last night a group of frat boys stayed in the two rooms on either side of our room and brought back a prostitute at about 3 am. They were yelling and banging on our door and windows for another hour or two. (the balconies connect.) The hotel is not staffed at night so there wasn't much we could do but lay in bed and listen to them shout insults at the girl they had brought with them.

Internet was not free. The swim up bar was not staffed. The prices for excursions listed in the rooms and on the website are incorrect (actual prices are much, much higher) The doors are paper thin with a lock a child could break.

Overall, there are better places in Jaco for the money. Too bad we already had reservations.

The restaurant is fabulous, incredible, delicious.

Upon checking in I had to change rooms almost immediately because the room smelled so strongly of cigarettes and cleaning supplies that I had a headache. We were moved upstairs where the rooms were ugly and depressing. In the morning we moved back downstairs to another room which was decorated nicely but also smelled of cigarettes. It wasn't as bad as the first room and not as depressing as the second room so we stayed. Had we been able to get a refund, we definately would've left. In addition, no one bothered to tell us that we could use the internet for free and there was a sign above the computer which stated that it cost money. We were told that there would be no connection fee to use a calling card which was a lie as we discovered when we checked out. There was also something was a wrong with the phone in my room because everytime someone called me from the states, I would get a missed call slip in my room eventhough I had been there all morining. We also got a surprise parking fee when we checked out. Avoid Hotel Poseidon. You certainly do not get what you pay for. I feel mean writing this so I would like to add that the staff was polite. I needed band-aids and a hair dryer and they were able to provide me with these things but still.... The room change issue and the surprise chargers at the end left a bad taste in my mouth.

We just returned from Costa Rica and spent 3 nights at the Hotel Poseidon, which were the best nights of our trip! The rooms are being remodeled and we were one of the first ones to stay in a new room, and it was very nice! We paid $75 per night during the off-season, and we felt like we were in a Mariott hotel! It looks like they are working on upgrading the entire hotel and we look forward to seeing all the improvments the next time we return.

And you must try their restaurant! The large tuna steaks and filet mignon was the best food we had in all of CR! This was the last leg of our trip and we were so excited to have good food after all the rice and beans we had eaten. They also have a small sports bar on the 3rd floor which was air conditioned and a great place to watch all the NBA games. You can even order from the downstairs dinner menu while in the upstairs bar.

Thanks to all the great staff at the Hotel Poseidon! They really made the last part of our trip special and we hope to see them all when we return next year.

I have stayed at the Hotel Poseidon before, and the rooms have been greatly improved. The owners are in the process of remodeling all of the rooms and the one I stayed in was beautiful!! The matress was brand new so I had a great nights sleep. The bathroom lighting was very much improved as was the whole look of the bathroom and room. They are upgrading over time, so be sure to ask to stay in one of the "new" rooms.

The restaurant was still the best in Jaco!! Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all just incredable in their restaurant. And the staff is still very friendly and helpful with all the tours and other information.

I have read some of the other reviews here, and I really think the owners are listening to their guests because they are making a ton of improvements! It's a great small hotel if you want to stay somewhere that has personal service.

What a strange place this is. We were given a room containing 5 beds (none of them terribly comfortable) for the two of us. The room was just about clean but fairly tatty. The room had only one window, loooking out onto the open-air landing.

The hotel does have a small pool although not in the best condition.

The staff were great though. Very helpful and friendly. And the restaurant at the front was superb.

It's a quirky place but I'm still glad we went here rather than to some large faceless place. I probably wouldn't stay here again but I'd definately come back to the restaurant.

I stayed at the Hotel Poseidon for one week in February. I booked the Hotel for $95 a night including taxes through Expedia. Probably better just to call or email them directly, front desk speaks English as does most of the staff.

The Hotel Poseidon is a small hotel with 15 rooms and excellent restaurant. There is small courtyard between the restaurant and hotel rooms that has a small pool with lounge chairs. There are also rooms above the restaurant and a 3rd floor sky bar, which is nice but rarely used. The pool and courtyard due to high walls doesn't get to many hours of direct sunlight, nice to be outside but don't have to worry about being burned.

Our room had two double beds in decent condition for Costa Rica, one bed squeaked a little too much. The room came with TV, cable, DVD player, refrigerator, and decent AC.

The Poseidon is located in the center of town and a short walk to the beach. A great location if you don't need to be right on the beach.

The other guests were friendly and the staff was always very helpful.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the free continental breakfast, a nice mix of fruits & grains, Costa Rica coffee.

We had two rooms at the Poseidon Hotel for three nights. Around 11:00am in the morning on the second day of our stay, they turned off all the water to the hotel without any notice or explanation to the guests. We were unable to use the showers, toilets, or sinks. After inquiring about it, we were told the water was off in the entire town but throughout the day there was water at every other business we visited, there was even water at their own restaurant. We had to use the wastebasket in the room to get water out of the swimming pool to flush the toilet. We decided to cut our stay at the hotel short and checked out after two nights since it was obvious that they were keeping their water in their holding tanks for the restaurant and didn't care about the guests in the hotel. Upon checkout, they even had the nerve to charge us for the bottle of water that we needed to use from the minibar to brush our teeth in the morning. I understand problems arise beyond someones control and all it would have taken to keep us happy was a little prior notice that they were turning off the water, a bucket of water to flush the toilet and a couple bottles of water to clean up in the mornings, but even that was to much to ask from them. Customer satisfaction doesn't seem to be high on their priority list.
