Wonderful spot with 6 villas each with a private pool, I believe. (Ours had a small one, some were lap sized) we rented a side-by-side, which is basically a 4 wheeler with seat belts, and used it to explore the little spots and towns nearby. The roads are dirt and often washed out, making it a necessity. It was a great 5 days. Took a surf lesson, saw wonderful Pacific sunsets, everyone was very nice in the area, mostly surfers.

We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at Casa Chameleon! All of our villas have private pools for our guests enjoyment, some are dipping pools while others are infinity edge or wrap around (the villa) pools. Side-by-sides are a great way to explore Mal Pais and enjoy a little off-roading in the process! Hope to see you back at Casa Chameleon in the future! Pura Vida!

My husband and I stayed at Casa Chameleon for 8 days in the Villa Pochote. Although the steps to get to our villa were tiresome (106 to be exact), it was worth the view from your villa and plus, you burned calories. What makes this hotel a 5 star hotel is the food and employees working there. Unfortunately, we didn't have the pleasure of having Chef Rob as our chef, but honestly, I don't think it can get any better than Chef Will, which is who we had during our stay there.... He is an AMAZING chef and overall genuine person. We loved our stay because of the kindness of the chefs/waiters there. Lilly, Marlene, Rocio, and Will have such a good heart and treat you like family. I was craving snapper fish and Will went personally down to the fishermans market to get it for us and cooked it exactly how we wanted it. I highly recommend getting the breakfast every morning because it is wonderful and filling. I recommend the dinner as well, but if you are adventurous, like us, I would highly recommend renting a car and checking out the local spots as well (Umi Sushi, The Bakery, and other sodas in the area were some of our favorites). I would highly recommend this hotel if you are a honeymooner or just a couple looking for a adventurous/romantic vacation. We are already planning our trip for next year!

Room Tip: My husband and I stayed in the Villa Pochote. Although the steps to get to our villa were tiresome...

I cannot say enough about Casa Chameleon. From reservation booking to final goodbye it was a wonderful experience. I must add this - when booking through email do not fret over the time it takes to receive responses. It will all be done. I would recommend this way if you are reserving well in advance. Otherwise phone would be best for shorter notice arrangements.

The property is well off the beaten path, but has great accessibility via arranged transport. Be sure to do this. Regularly scheduled flights service to San Jose International airport, and we booked the puddle-jumper flight to the small airport in Tambor with Sansa Air. Then we made ground transport arrangements from Tambor airstrip to the resort through Casa Chameleon reservations. If you choose one of Casa Chameleon's inclusive packages these can and usually are included.

Beautiful surroundings, small and intimate resort (only six villas on property) and great service. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. The GM Alonso is a great pleasure to correspond with and he makes every effort to assure you have a seamless vacations no matter what your plans are.

The food is delicious at the on-property dining room and the view is incomparable. They serve breakfast and dinner, and the afternoon period is serviced by the bar area near the commons pool offering drinks and a light lunch menu. Virtually all the meals are prepared with fresh locally sourced ingredients, and at dinner, the catch of the day selection is just that - the local fisherman's catch of the day. Could be tuna, could be snapper, could be mahi.

The villas are wonderfully appointed with great space. The folding doors face the ocean and can be fully retracted to give you the open air layout. Plunge pool in every villa comes in handy for cooling off whenever, but the rooms do have A/C which takes a bit to cool the room but once there it is quite comfortable. Clean and well serviced daily with a nice folded towel/flower arrangement each day.

Mal Pais is an area known for its consistent surf, so the in-town feel is definitely very local and very surfer. I'm not one who partakes of this, but nevertheless the beach area (Playa Carmen) is rugged and beautiful and the water is warm.

This is a safe area but petty thievery will take those who present the opportunity so be aware of your surroundings and just use some common sense and you will be fine.

I highly recommend Casa Chameleon to all, especially couples and those who seek a truly off the beaten path resort.

Room Tip: The bigger villas are Pochote, Ultra and Estrella. The smaller villas are fine, but have a bit less...

We stayed in Villa Estrella and everything was absolutely amazing!!! Although it was a long walk to get to our villa the view was amazing the whole way down. The villa was very large and so comfy. After all of our adventures during the day we always came back to a clean room. Everyone who worked there made us feel like family. If we ever needed to change or add anything to our itinerary they were always able to accommodate. The food was absolutely amazing along with the service. Overall this was a 5 star honeymoon for us!

Room Tip: Villa Estrella is a honeymooners dream!

It was amazing. Best place for a honeymoon.
The private villa was spacious, clean, and the private pools was incredible. The perfect place to relax, if you don't have an activity planned for a day there is still plenty to do by just relaxing in your villa or heading up to the main pool for lunch or a drink.

Now.... the food. Where to begin. Rob and his crew are incredible. I am an incredibly picky eater and did not dislike a thing that was put on our plate. The level of cooking was on par with a 5star restaurant and was amazing. Rob's team of Marlene, Wilmer, and Anette were equally as amazing as him. If you have the opportunity to purchase a package it is worth every penny in the 3 course dinners and amazing breakfasts.
The breakfasts were always changing and accompanied by tons of fresh fruit, fresh fruit juice, coconut water and coffee. Rocio did a FANTASTIC job and we ended up not having breakfast room service because we enjoyed the team so much.

The people who helped with renting our vehicle were great. We did the activities of SUP and the Montezuma canopy tour. Both were incredible and the customer service at both were out of this world. Andy at Freedom Riding was a great instructor and I would highly recommend choosing their activity regardless of your level of experience with SUP.

An amazing trip, an amazing team, and an amazing property.

Room Tip: We had the ultra luxury villa which was incredible. However, you can see Pochote to your left. Not e...

My wife and I have traveled across several continents and in countless environments, but never have we run across a hotel quite this unique. The landscape is beautiful, and to go to Mal Pais is to truly "get away" as this is as remote an area of Costa Rica as you will find while still getting a 5 Star property like this. The town itself is amazing - the food choices from around the world are like nothing we've ever seen before. Italian, Israeli, French, Salvadoran, etc...all of it being AMAZING! Small shops, lots of outdoor eating...and it's very affordable.

As for Casa Chameleon - the resort is so small that it essentially feels like you're renting the place out all by yourself, even when it's at full capacity. The Chef is hands down the best in the country, and if he were working in the US he would be a James Beard award winner - yes he's that good. The meals aren't cheap, but they are made to order, in front of you, with food that was either pulled from the ocean that afternoon or came out of the ground from a farm close by. It's seriously legit.

The rooms are all amazing...private pools, amazing showers with glass walls looking over the hillside, and very comfortable beds. Very large patios and breakfast can be served on the patio every morning!

We took advantage of the surfing lessons, zip lining, the nature reserve hike, etc...and all of it's recommended. Lay by the hotel and sip frozen beverages for a while...but then get out and enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica, you won't regret it!

Casa Chameleon was a perfect honeymoon location for us. We dined in our room, at the bar, at the restaurant and offsite. The food was delicious. The breakfast and lunch chef is someone different from the dinner chef; both are amazing. We had typical Costa Rican flavors in the day, and everything from lobster to lamb at night. Food can be delivered to your room by the chef so you get to meet the person who prepares your meal. Rob was our chef and we loved meeting him and loved everything he prepared.
We are active people and loved the hike to the beach and appreciated the stairs that led to our room. We ate more in Costa Rica and found this extra exercise to be exactly what we needed to indulge in a hearty breakfast and a three course dinner.

Beyond the food, there is much to see in Costa Rica. The staff was extremely accommodating and we were able to book most of our activities directly through the hotel. We reserved a side by side (ATV) for 4 days so that we could adventure. Traveling by ATV is a lot of fun. We also headed to Montezuma twice and spent some time at the tidal pools nearby.

I highly recommend Casa Chameleon.
