First, I should start by stating we had just stayed at Villas Hermosas for 11 days, so we were spoiled :) Second, we were in the "Standard Room" at Moana Lodge. The higher priced offerings looked better, but were unfortunately full.

That being said, the "Standard Room" was mediocre at best. The appointments in the room were all clean and updated, no problems there. The room was smaller than we expected. We were only provided with a single sheet for the bed, an obvious attempt to save on AC costs. It wasn't a big deal, but definitely cheapened the experience.

The biggest problem with our room was noise. All the "Standard Rooms" are part of the same structure. We were stuck on the bottom floor. We could literally hear every step our upstairs neighbors took. At one point we actually heard them yawn! This wasn't their fault at all, the room is just extremely loud. Every single sound is magnified x 25. The first night we were woken up out of a dead sleep at around midnight and the second night I had to go upstairs and ask the guest to turn his music down. He thought I was crazy because it wasn't even loud.

The breakfast was excellent, but the portions are small. Dinner was great but they were unfortunately out of several menu items (which we weren't told about until we tried to order them). The restaurant does have an amazing view.

In summary, we wouldn't stay at Moana Lodge again.

After an hour and a half of dusty driving, Moana Lodge is a true oasis. Lodge keepers Vicky and Aiden have kept the dark African theme adorning all the amenities of a first class resort. Attention to detail is the goal here with new comfortable beds, up-to-date plumbing, efficient air conditioning and prompt, responsible service that kept us, not just satisfied, but continuously impressed. The climb to the Papaya Restaurant was something we relished each day, if not for the breathtaking view of the ocean and the Pacific dry forest, then for the great food which was always creative, fresh and savory. You would be well advised to plan a day or two of your vacation in Mal Pais just relaxing at the poolside bar and jacuzzi at Moana Lodge.

tips: ask for a room with oceanview if available; my room had no screens and i don't like a/c or bugs or lizards;beach is across dirt road and is not a sunbathing beach-lots of rocks & debris but pretty view of ocean & coast-need to go down road about a mile for sunbathing beach; no tv or wireless in my room:lots of steps up to restaurant & rooms with a view. comments: owner has done a very nice job-beautiful restaurant with great views, food delicious, nice bar & lounge, beautiful pool area, room was simple but nicely decorated,a nice romantic and cozy hotel tucked away in a hillside.owner needs to smile more but the rest of crew very affable and friendly.

Aidan and Vicky were excellent hosts. We found the Moana Lodge having read about it on Trip Advisor. we actually drove in, no reservations, after having a terrible experience somewhere else. They were very accomodating, we always felt at home, and their property we found to be very relaxing. They also were an excellent resource for all of the local places and things to do. The layout of the property, although they have 10 rooms, are separate enough so that you feel like you have the place to your self. Check out their newly opened restaurant "Papaya Restaurant and Lounge" at the top of the property. We had a great dinner their one nite, and got to experience Aidan's great bartending skills first hand. We had stayed at Casa Chameleon three years ago in Malpais, but we would recommend the Moana Lodge first. Pura Vida Aidan & Vicky

This review is very late, however this place has never been far from my mind.
It took us forever to get there the roads where so bad and just a cloud of dust.
When we rolled into town they locals were sweeping molasses on the roads to cut down on the dust. I remembered touching the jeep when I got out and having to wipe my hand on the bottom of my shoe. What did I care, I had just found paradise!!!!!
At that time there was only a few rooms and the expansion was planned for that spring I believe. God I hope you didn't spoil it too much.

The rooms were amazing, the scenery breath taking!!!!!! There wasn't any restaurant on site then when had to drive into town. We found something to eat everyday and never once any sickness of concern with eating local food. I felt so safe and so relaxed.. this is a place everyone needs to experince it truely is paradise.... I am coming back to Costa rica 2011 and I will visit again....

My wife and I stayed here for 1 week in February. We stayed in one of the junior suites. The view from the bedroom and balcony and outdoor shower was amazing - great ocean view!
Aidan and his wife have created a magical spot to relax and unwind. All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel has a great pool. The restaurant is fantastic - the food, the atmosphere and the view! My wife and I made a point of going to the bar at 5 pm every day to have a drink and watch the sunset.
The hotel is about a 5 minute drive from town where there is a bit of shopping, large stretches of quiet beach, snorkelling, deep sea fishing, zipline canopy tours and the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve.

The hotel is about a five hour drive from San Jose but is well worth the drive once you arrive. The new highway in out of San Jose can get you to the ferry in about 1 hour. The ferry is about 1-1.5 hours and once arriving at Paquera it is about 1.5-2 hours to Moana. highly recommend the GPS if driving - it was a life saver and lowers the stress level of the drive greatly.

If you are looking for a beautiful quiet place to relax, Moana Lodge is it!
