This was our fourth time in CR, and the second time in Malpais, lodging at the Moana Lodge.

Indeed, Malpais is famous because of its beaches and surfers...but moreover, Malpais is different because people and nature are simply living in harmony. Joy and peace are part of their DNA and so you are more than welcome to be “contaminated”.

Aiden and Vicky, owners of the Moana Lodge, have elected domicile in Malpais years ago and became passionate about sharing their discovery with excellence and style.

Luxury is not a matter of abundance and ostentation. Luxury is a matter of exclusivity and simplicity. This not in the reach of everyone to experiment at this level. But fortunately, it is more than affordable to lodge at the Moana Lodge.

Passion is never ending for the Moana Lodge: they have now two Junior Suites, a Master Suite, and a first class Restaurant with an astonishing view to the ocean.

Thank you Aiden, Vicky, Ruth and all your team and staff.

Hasta la proxima !

Without doubt this is one of the best places I have ever stayed on my many travels throughout the world. The rooms are exquisite, the pool and jacuzzi are beautiful, the food is delicious (my mouth waters as I think about it) and the views…well they will blow you away and I swear you won’t see sunsets like you do here anywhere else – best in town without a doubt. Vicky and Aidan are made to be hosts. They have great recommendations on the local area, can hook you up with trusted guides for just about anything you want to do and make you feel like you’re a family member staying at their home. The hotel is such a stylish, comfortable, oasis of calm that you’ll be left thinking you should stay there for your full trip in Costa Rica!

Moana Lodge is amazing; the owners, Aidan & Vicky, treated us like family and the staff was so friendly and warm. Everyone was so accomodating and helped us with anything we needed. The property is serene, gorgeous, secluded, and has incredible views from the suites and the restaurant. The restaurant serves fabulous food, and the best mojitos we've ever had. It's located just across the road from a beautiful pebble beach, where we watched many sunsets. The sandy beaches of Playa Carmen are just a short fifteen-minute walk away, but you hardly notice the time because there is so much to look at walking along the shore. We will definitely return to Moana Lodge in the future. We can't wait to go back!

We traveled over from Jaco beach hoping for a little nicer environment, it exceeded our hopes. The Moana Lodge was small (ten rooms) with a wonderful restaurant up above the canopy of rain forest as was our room by the way. The views and sunsets were fantastic and we have an ocean view from our home, so we don't take these views lightly. The service was top notch and personal. Felix who met us each evening for sunset cocktails and at dinner (there wasn't any reason to eat dinner elsewhere) greeted us by name and made us feel like we owned the place. I surfed each morning and was back in time to have a nice breakfast (included) with my wife who slept in as the place is quite save the sound of birds and rainforest sounds. We had a great time!!!!!
One side comment: You best be young enough to handle a number of stairs, that's why the views are so great.

This was by far the nicest place we stayed on our trip. They were nice enough to upgrade us to a deluxe room at the standard room rate since the standard room we requested had a broken air conditioner. The decor is very nice ( and this is coming from an interior designer!) and I like they layouts in the rooms. The restaurant had and amazing view of the sunset and great cocktails and dinner. It was also nice to be able to enjoy the view at breakfast. The only con was that it was far from the surf beach and town (a $4-6 cab ride). Otherwise we really enjoyed our stay here.

I wish I could give half stars cause i really wanted to rate this a 4.5. But I just couldn't put 5 stars. They did however seem to have a good crew working on improvements (not to the point of feeling like people were working around you or any noise). Great place in Malpais. The rooms are big with high ceilings. Unlike feedback from others, we didn't mind the decorations at all. The masks were cool. Updated bathroom. Bed was big and comfy but as previously mentioned there is only a single sheet to cover with. It was warm enough so more wasn't required...I'm just one of those that likes a few covers on them to be comfy in bed. Only issue I had with the room was there were 2 rooms in my building connected by a pretty thin sounding wall. Could hear the people next door when we were in our rooms at the same time. The pool looked nice but we spent our time in the ocean so didn't get a chance to use it in our 2 days here. Aidan and Vicky and Felix were very helpful with advice on local spots and set us up with a tour snorkeling Tortuga off of Montezuma beach. The restaurant and the view are the best part of this place. I think it has just been completed in the last year or so but it was excellent. Great breakfast in the morning that is included. Dinners were delicious and the service was great. A few stairs up depending where your room is, but the view of the beach and the ocean is excellent. If you walk across the street to the beach it is a rocky area of the beach but is a 15 minute walk along the shore to the sandiest part of the beach and where the town center is. It's about 1km. You can drive or walk down the road to the center as well. No its not the prettiest road, but compared to some of the main roads I took it wasn't bad. I took my headlamp in my pack and the walk home was fine in the dark. The beach walk actually felt faster. I saw some other places advertised that were right in the center...I wasn't in any of the rooms but none looked nicer than Moana. I didn't see the one rated #1 on this site so cannot compare. But the road in the center is just as dirty and nosier, but is closer to the nice section of the beach. About Malpais...We loved it here. It is a surfing town and yes there are alot of young surfers here but is a great town with a great vibe. If you are looking for rodeo drive on the beach and to get pampered outside of your hotel, this is not the place. But if you want a great beach town with an interesting crowd...you should check this place out. We went to Samara, Malpais and Montezuma and this was our favorite of the three.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights on our honeymoon, and it is a fantastic hotel. The rooms were clean and comfortable, with high ceilings and a large shower. Our favorite aspect was the new restaurant that has been built on the hill behind the hotel. We did not stay in one of the ocean view rooms, but after seeing the view from the view from the restaurant we wished we had. You get an expansive view of the whole coastline, and you see some spectacular sunsets. The food at the restaurant was outstanding, the chef is a true gem. Every dish was delicious and carefully arranged, and tasted like the ingredients had just been delivered that day. We would recommend people stay here for the food alone, but the room was also very comfortable. Our bed was nice and big, and the A/C cooled it down nicely at night. Vicky and Aidan, the owners, were very welcoming and helpful. They know the area well and could recommend great places for lunch, surf instructors and beaches. All the staff made the effort to get to know your name and say hello by name whenever they saw you, going that extra bit to make you feel welcome. Overall this is a fantastic hotel to stay at.
