“Our 25th Anniversary!”
Reviewed 10 July 2013

Roger & Heidi are wonderful hosts, and their two sons are just as enjoyable. We loved our villa and it was a nice place to plant ourselves for a few days. We did book some excursions outside of the hotel as it was much cheaper. This is not beachfront property, and there are many available in Mal Pais, so keep that in mind. You do have a beautiful ocean view. We really enjoyed the other guests there, the environment is very much like a small family. However, this changes at 4pm as the BBQ, bar and pool become open to the public. There were a couple of nights we opted not to stay there as the local crowd was pretty loud and invasive, so we all headed to Caracola's as they have terrific food and quiet, beachfront seating.

Room Tip: Villa #3 is the most isolated and has a terrific view.

Let me start by saying I found Vista de Olas becuase of Living Social and bought a package that was amazing! This was our first time in Costa Rica, and this would be the third hotel we stayed at during our visit, boy was it worth the wait. This place has bar none the most amazing view in all of Mal Pais, run by a cast of characters who love the country and what it has to offer as much as you will. Heidi was a blast, and a great host, the bar staff TJ and Randal were always there with smiles ready to get you what you needed. The breakfast was great a new surprise each day. This place is BEAUTIFUL! This place is intimate and small, which allows the opportunity to meet other people staying at the hotel, which was great, many of us hit it off and hung out together during our stay. That said if you want to be left alone, that is also completely an option, with only 5 bungalows you are likely to have some time to yourself. However the happy hour from 4-8, does open the pool and bar up to locals and people staying in nearby hotels, which at times was a disappointment as some people don't know how to act. A bit of a bummer. But don't let that keep you from staying here, I would totally come back. We meet great people and have amazing memories and photos of our time at Vista de Olas.

The night before my wife and I left for Costa Rica and Vista de Olas, I read a one star review of Vista on Trip Advisor and panicked. I'm happy to say that our experience wasn't the same as the other reviewer's. With Roger's constant communication (before, during and after our trip), the AMAZING view, and the off-beaten nature of the place, this was a wonderful experience. If you're looking for a large sea-side all inclusive hotel, this is not your place. If you love to travel to unique, off the-beaten-path destinations and really discover the land, this is your place.

Rather than write a longwinded paragraph, I've left a few bullet points why Vista deserves the 5 stars:

1. The view from the infinity pool is amazing, but the breeze on top of the hill is even better. Mal Pais can get a little muggy and humid (I could always notice the difference when we went into town or down on the beach). Roger did an excellent job in choosing where he wanted to build this villa, specifically choosing the hill for both the breeze and the view.

2. Because of the small number of villas, you're a name, not a hotel room #. You really feel that Roger takes the time to get to know his guests, and respond to all of their inquiries...

3. ...And Roger will dedicate the time to not only answer all the inquiries but set up whatever activity you want to do! From booking the fishing trip to Zip-lining (Zip-lining in Mal Pais offers an awesome view of the coastline), to even drawing personal maps or cutting our freshly caught fish into sushi, Roger took excellent care of us.

4. As everyone else has written, don't miss out on Roger's ATV tour! It's exhilarating (driving the ATV in the "jungle"), adventurous (cliff jumping at Montezuma falls), and relaxing (afternoon lunch or swimming on a Montezuma beach) all at once.

5. Lastly the entire design of the place rocks. The quality of the villas was excellent and spacious; the beds were great; I personally loved the outdoor showers; and the pool...!!!

Things to consider:

You may opt to rent a car to help explore the Nicoyan Peninsula, and to avoid the costs of the taxis to and from the airport.

The barbecue (as others have written) may not live up to a fully catered experience, but it can also be a cheap night in if you split a chicken and get salads. Also, if you do deep sea fishing, you can take advantage of the barbecue and enjoy cooking a fresh fish yourself, and Roger was also gracious enough to offer to make sushi from our fresh fish.

If you're interested in great restaurants, I would definitely recommend:

1. Habanero's for excellent gourmet Mexican food on the beach...

2. The Bakery. It lives up to its reputation.

3. Caracolas- a short walk from the hotel on the beach front. Great ambience and typical food.

Lastly, the frozen mojitos at Vista should definitely not be missed...

From our experience, we would wholeheartedly recommend Vista de Olas.

Room Tip: Villa # 3 has the greatest views; Villa # 4 the second best...

We came here for happy hour and it was well worth the trouble getting there (roads are a little tricky in this area and this hotel is way up on a hill). But the swim up bar, infinity pool is awesome and the drinks are delicious too.

Like most of the other reviewers, I had an incredible time at Vista de Olas. From Roger's hospitality and Jaime's attention to detail to make sure my best friend and I were well taken care of during our entire stay, to the sheer gorgeousness of the property and the unbelievably fun activities that we took part in (ATV'ing, waterfall jumping, fishing, and ziplining), I could not have had a better time in Mal Pais. This is a fantastic destination for couples or small groups of friends or family. The entire crew at the hotel is welcoming and accommodating. One of my favorite parts of the trip was getting an opportunity to meet and bond with the other couples staying in the other villas, and since the hotel is small, it's easy to do that. Fantastic experience!

From the day we booked our stay at Vista de Olas Roger and the Vista team was extremely accommodating. They truly made making arrangements during our stay easy. Staying at Vista de Olas was unreal. The Villas were exactly as pictured on the website, the infinity pool was beautiful and the staff was great! Vista de Olas is the only place to stay. We were sad to leave but looking forward to making it back someday. Roger, Heidi and family were awesome and made us feel at home while we were there.

This was probably one of the best vacations we have ever taken. At first I was hesitant being as the only form of communication is email, but Roger was awesome on being responsive. I probably emailed him about 20 times but he never made me feel I was bothersome. It was my first time to Costa Rica and I didn't know about all the extra trips (connecting flight from Sansa, and then 1 hour drive in a taxi) it took to get there so I was kinda nervous. We did pretty much everything there was to do, ATV Tour and Canopy Tour (ziplining) by far our favorite!!!! We also did fishing and horseback riding. What was nice was that after everything we did, there was still enough time to relax. Roger was great at setting everything up and making you feel at home. The place is absolutely beautiful and Loca, Sky, Sasha, Kung Fu & Panda are some new furry friends you'll meet. We definitely will be back!!
