“Great overall experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 March 2014

A big thank you to the staff at Hotel San Bada! In a moment I'll tell you why...

The hotel is located at the end of the road through Manuel Antonio, and adjacent to the entrance to the national park. The property is lovely - including a great pool and swim up bar (if you're in to that...) :-)

The rooms (ask for a high floor - it is only 5 stories) are airy, and all have a view toward the ocean which is about 300 yards away. The sunset from our 5th floor room was spectacular. And we had 2 iguanas hanging out on a three by our window for all three days we were there. They only appeared to move a few feet!

The service is where the hotel stands our for us. We left behind an item of little monetary value but great emotional value to us, and we didn't notice our mistake for a full 24 hours. We got in touch with the hotel and they handled this expertly and with poise and caring that we didn't expect. They recovered our item, sent us an email immediately after finding it, and finished off by sending it to us in Canada. Marylin at the front desk took the lead on this: Thank you to Marylin and your great staff!

Room Tip: Choose the 5th floor!

We stayed here one night with a Caravan tour and I was glad it was only one night. The highlight of the room was the quiet AC unit. Since the ceilings were high, at least the cold air didn't blow in your face. But the room was dark and the lighting poor, and we had a little "friend" on the patio door jam. The bummer was no minibar or refrigerator.

As for food, the buffet was okay. It was extremely warm at night, but had to enjoy eating in the open air (better than 20 below at home!)

We enjoyed our walk to the Park, along the beach area and to the small shops, which was convenient.

Dear Guest!

Thank you for visit and your recente stay at our Hotel!

We will address inmediately the maintanance issues encountered at your room, we will appreciate if you could send us an email to info@hotelsanbada.com that way our Manager can ask you specific details of the room in order to verify in the problem was solved.

It is very curious, but in Costa Rica we usually deposit the toilet paper into the trash bin, as many places uses septic tanks. Specifically in our case, we have a water treatment plant using bacterias, for that reason the company in charge of the function of the plant recommended us not to throw any toilet paper or harmful chemicals into the toilet, as it may kill the bacteria that decomposes the wastes. The result of this is that 99% of the water is clean and reused for gardening.

We hope that even thought there were some issues, the rest of your stay and hotel services such as the restaurante, frontdesk and location were of your satisfaction.

We hope to welcome you back in the near future, sincerely,

Your friends at Hotel San Bada

This hotel has a great location for entering the national. You are right at the gate and it's also very close to shops and the beach. The 6th floor observation deck and pool has wonderful views...a great place to watch the sunset. Rooms were fine but a little dated. Our only criticism was a strange odor in our room which was hard to identify...possibly chemical, but really have no idea. Pool area was great.

I stayed here one night with a Caravan tour. Room was dark and the lighting poor. Very large bathroom with large walk-in shower. It did have a deck that was backed up by the jungle, so quiet. AC nice...small, ceiling-mount and quiet. I didn't have a screen for the sliding doors, so the management sent up a maintenance guy and a screen and he installed it in minutes. Safe was difficult to use...other travelers complained. No minibar or fridge. Buffet dinner and breakfast were good. Sunset views from the top floor public terrace were spectacular. Location to beach and the Manuel Antonio Park is great. One gross thing...like other small local hotels in Costa Rica...you are not to flush toilet paper down the toilet, due to plumbing and ecological concerns. So, you deposit it into a small covered waste can next to the toilet.

Room Tip: Get an upper floor room. There are free computers on one of the upper floors

The room odor was as if we could have been housed over a huge septic tank. The bathroom was beautiful and the shower head reminded me of the Seinfeld show where Cramer bought the shower used to wash elephants.

The hotel, on the 6th floor (a floor with no guestrooms), offers a scenic view of the Pacific and visual treats such as colorful birds and lazy iguanas in the trees. Tiny bats sleep in a small area above the 6th floor elevator. There are lots of wonderful seating/lounging chairs up there. Great place to enjoy a drink and read a book.

There is no coffee maker in the room. They offer coffee on the 6th floor, starting at 6, but they did not have many cups available at that time. The Manuel Antonio National Park gates open at 7, so there were many people up there at 6 to get coffee before going to the park gate.

There was no clock in the room and no refrigerator. They did have a hairdryer. We had sliding glass doors there and many of us, upon checking in, found them unlocked. They also had a room safe. From conversations with others, all shower stalls were wheelchair accessible. There was no tub.

The buffet we had was offered through Caravan Tours, so I never saw a menu for others to order. The food was very good. The water in the restaurant is safe to drink, but I would recommend only bottled water in the room. The hotel provided two small bottles of water.

It is the nicest hotel at the entrance to the park. It takes about 20-23 minutes of trekking from the gate to get into the park paths and the beach. Go early. By 9 a.m., it starts to look crowded like Disneyland and gets hot. In the park, there are two restroom buildings and changing rooms for the beach. They are not lighted, so take a flashlight.

Room Tip: Maybe a higher floor (we were on the bottom floor) could escape the smell that our room had.

We stayed at this hotel as part of our Caravan Tour. We had a free cocktail hour on the 6 floor pool deck.
The tunnel to beach go to a alleyway that is lined with vendors stalls. Next you come across a beach road. Along this street is various shops included a small grocery store.
There was no coffee maker in the room. There was no frig in the room . Although free bottle water was available .
There was a breakfast buffet with a egg station for eggs your way.
There was a souvenir shop at the hotel.

We had a great one-night stay at this lovely hotel beside Manuel Antonio National Park as part of a Costa Rica tour. Our room was large, but there were some problems with the beside lighting not having individual controls. Food at our tour-included buffet was good but in no way exceptional.
We were on the back of the hotel, and we enjoyed seeing and hearing the howler monkeys from our balcony. But some people might prefer a less raucus awakening at 4:30 a.m. Wifi access was impossibly slow in my room, but there was a business center with two computers.
