“Great Stay!”
Reviewed 8 March 2014

My husband and I just returned from a one week stay at La Mansion. We had a great stay and would highly recommend. It's a small hotel so you feel like you're at home. No need to stake out a poolside chair early or wait for anything as there are no crowds..and you get to know the staff and other guests. It is situated on a high hill with breathtaking views of the ocean on both sides surrounded by lush tropical jungle. We saw monkeys, sloth and many tropical birds from our balcony, the pool terrace and dining room. Can't beat the view from nearly any vantage point at this hotel. Staff provided friendly and professional service from the front desk to the restaurant to housekeeping. The manager Robert took time to talk with us and all of the guests and make sure we were happy with everything throughout the week. The rooms are ok (could use updating…especially the shower) but the view from your own balcony is so amazing you won't really care. Make sure you ask for a room NOT facing the front parking area in front of the hotel. Our first night was facing the parking lot and they were happy to move us to a room with a better view for the rest of our stay. Also you can ask them to bring you your own mini fridge for your room so you can enjoy whatever beverages you like.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the parking area. Our room was in a newer area that took a bit of winding...

My wife and I checked in here on February 24th and spent the full week we had in Manuel Antonio at LA mansion inn. Their slogan is come as a guest, leave as a friend and they live up to it. Everyone here made us feel warm and welcome like a home away from home. Stevan and Paola at the front desk helped us make all of our arrangements for dinner and our activities for the day. I can't say enough about how wonderful our stay was and how helpful everyone was. When my wife became ill towards the end of the trip, they had every thing we needed to get her feeling well again. When she needed eye drops, they ordered it for us and had it delivered. They have gone above and beyond to make our stay here everything we hoped it would be.

I do gave to say that at first i was hesitant to stay so far away from the park. However, they offer a free shuttle service to and from the park so there is no problem there. If you have the opportunity to stay here, we highly recommend it.

Great room, great location, great staff, great property...Great time
Location is perfect. Close to beach and fun.
Service is top notch.
Views are stupendous and none are better in Manuel Antonio.
Staff is super especially Elizabeth and Robert. They see to it that your stay is as perfect as possible.
We got married here and we used Elizabeth as our wedding coordinator. Her attention to detail and her sincere personality made our stay so special.
We have done our fair share of traveling and La Mansion is definitely a jewel.

We stayed for a week and a half in January and found the accommodations to be comfortable and the staff to be gracious. The pool was never busy and the food at the pool bar was much better than typical fare for pool bars. The location is isolated, but that was what we were seeking. As mentioned by most reviewers, the view was breathtaking. Breakfasts and dinners were excellent. The chef turned a mixed bag of gamefish which I caught into a truly fabulous dinner.

I wrote 4 other reviews about places we visited in Costa Rica, all positive. I am sorry to report that our 3 night stay at La Mansion was very disappointing. Based on reviews we had read, we expected a top notch experience, and indeed the views were very good and our room was spacious and well-appointed. Unfortunately, the service was very sub-par, and it tainted almost all parts of our stay. We stayed at 3 other hotels in various parts of Costa Rica for similar durations, all of which were significantly less expensive than La Mansion, and received more attentive and gracious service at all of them. We would not pay the premium price to stay at La Mansion again.

The hotel is located on a peninsula about 100 meters above sea level, providing good views across Playa Manuel Antonio (southeast) as well as Playa Biesanz (north). But the hill in front of the hotel blocks the direct view of the sunset across the ocean, even from our top floor, west-facing room (#18). There is no place on the grounds from which you can directly see the setting sun; you need to go down to the beach for that. Make sure to request a west-facing room, though, as there are a number of rooms below the pool which have less interesting views.

We arrived at 3:50 p.m. There was only one person at the front desk, which was the case more than 50% of the time during our stay. We waited 15 min for the host to finish checking in the previous guest, as apparently no one else could be called to help. When we were shown to our room on the upper floor, the AC was off, and the room temp was in the mid 90s (35C). Our host turned on the AC, so he knew the issue--not wanting to stay in the room at that point, we dropped our bags and opted for a facility tour and eventually the pool. We got only an abbreviated, rushed tour, as our “guide” was still the only person covering the front desk. By 7:30, the room temp had gotten down to ~75 (24C); the wall AC unit just can’t cool a room that size quickly, although it’s more than adequate to maintain comfortable temps once you get the room there. This was our first exposure to lack of staff preparation.

The pool has a nice swim-up bar with 4 or 5 in-water stools, but it’s not a very big area. There are only 4 chaises poolside, and the pool itself can’t handle much more than 8-10 guests at a time. There are more chairs and umbrellas on the deck above the pool, but since that area isn’t naturally shaded, there aren’t enough shaded chairs/tables available for more than about 4 couples during the midday hours. And we rarely saw any servers strolling around to offer drinks – you had to go down and ask the bartender.

The next morning, we got up early for breakfast, as we were scheduled to meet a tour guide at 7:30. The restaurant opened at 6:30, and we were down at 6:40, which should have been plenty early. However, apparently there was a large tour group staying at the hotel who were checking out that day; and they all came down as a group right at 6:30 to ensure they could all sit together--they filled every table in the dining area. The staff had apparently not asked the tour coordinator when they would be checking out, and therefore had made no preparations for the space and serving staff issue that would create. I waited 10 min to speak to the desk person, as she was struggling to print a boarding pass for another guest. She basically gave us no options, telling us very curtly that the tour group had just as much right to dine as we did, and that we just hadn’t gotten up early enough. There were two other couples in the same boat as us waiting in the lobby – no attempt was made to take our orders, and no offer to pack “to go” boxes. We ended up cramming partial meals down in ~7 min so we could make our tour only ~10 min late. Strike two for lack of preparation and customer concern. The desk gal did come back later to apologize, and offered us a complimentary bottle of wine with our dinner. However, we met with another surprise at dinner, as apparently the offer was restricted to a bottle of house champagne, which was not really what we wanted with dinner. It took a fair amount of bartering to get approval for the cheapest bottle of merlot on the wine list—probably not much cost difference anyway.

We had our best time in the Bat Cave bar chatting with and being served by Diego. He was funny, a great bartender, and he literally traded the shirt off his back with me. He made it a great time –seek him out. Sadly, he was the only staff person who made a strongly positive memory during our stay.

Robert, the hotel manager, was back on site the next day, and I would say that the staff seemed to be more “on top of things” with him around. We spoke at length with him about the service issues we had encountered; he was very gracious and apologetic and told us that things would be discussed at the next staff meeting. Although we did not ask for any compensation, none was offered.

So, nice views, good accommodations, but you can do better for your money.

Room Tip: top floor, west facing rooms have best views, but call ahead at least 4 hours and make sure they tur...

Dear Dave:

Your review was throroughly discussed with our staff as were your comments when you where at the Mansion and I do apologize for any inconvenience. As you said yourself based on most other reviews you felt dissapointed. We have been extremely busy lately and while this is no excuse as you noticed we had a small wedding group. Our staffing is almost 2 employees for every available room which is normally is more then adequate. However, when we have a group we sometimes experience a "bottle neck". As part of our CST program we try to conserve energy and usually do not turn on the AC until the expected arrival time of our guests. It does not take 4 hours to cool a room and while we service each AC unit every 45 days as part of our preventive maintenance program - we did add fryon gas which solved the problem. We would have done this much earlier if you had notified us that the room was not cooling enough.

Concerning the pool area you are correct it is not a very big swimming pool of the hotel and for that reason we built a second pool at the Contempo area of the hotel which is available if we are experiencing a serious overcrowding problem. While you are correct that the small area directly in front of the pool holds 4 chaises - the areas to the left and right of the pool can accomodate more than 40 people in a combination of seating areas. Some chaises, some sofa's, some tables and chairs, etc. The group in question only occupied 11 rooms or 22 people out of 50 - As I am sure you noticed throughout the Mansion we have several areas that can accomodate that number of people.

Your comments about wait time, no being able to exchange your bottle of sparkling wine for a "cheap bottle of Melot", to go boxes, and other assumptions should have been easily be resolved and clarified if you had brought this to my (owner) or Robert's (manager) attention sooner. For that reason I live on property and for that reason I have Robert walking around all day doing what he does best; communicating with our guests. If he is not there - I am here - if I am not here we have a designated MOD. However, if people rather wait until after their departure and prefer to display their grievances in public there is hardly anything I can do other than invite them back to show that this is not the way we usually operate. Life to much too short for having to spend time on long detailed reviews when a short phone call would have remedied most everything.

We stayed in room 11, the Presidential Suite, the first week in February, and it was all the name suggests. Two large wonderful rooms, super ceiling air conditioners (one in each room with remote control), two separate bathrooms, built-in jacuzzi, very comfortable bed in the bedroom, overlooking a large balcony and view of the ocean bay of the Manuel Antonio beaches. This description doesn't do it justice. However, everywhere on the property, you can get a wonderful view of the sunrise from your unit.

The food for the included breakfast, lunch, as well as dinner, was as good as any of the several restaurants we tried in the area-a little more formal setting, but not fancy. Nice swimming pool with a bar, and a great deck overlooking the ocean on both sides of the peninsula. All the staff aimed to please, with special kudos to Robert (manager), Paolla (front desk with a smile always) and Jorge, very attentive at the pool bar. Your comfort is their priority.

Small inconvenience- parking is somewhat limited, but not a big deal, and it is hilly for walking so be prepared

Tips for travelers to the area:
Don't be afraid to drive from San Jose airport- all nicely paved highway, 3 hour drive, follow directions from www.manuelantonio.net/driving-directions, but stay on the toll road and keep driving on that highway (built since the directions), going through Jaco and beyond. Probably worth the extra money to buy "no liability insurance" if you do rent (they don't tell you how much it adds when you get the low-ball on line rate confirmation) and it eliminates much anxiety driving these two lane roads

They take U.S. currency (500 colon to the dollar) so bring a bunch of dollar bills for tolls and before you can get to an ATM (DON"T CHANGE MONEY IN THE AIRPORT)

Stop in Jaco at the Maxi Pali (big store next to the road, on your way) and buy a couple of folding beach chairs for beaches that don't rent them for the day (only about $15 each)

Check the tide times (listed in the local free magazine at the hotel) when you want to beach in Manuel Antonio area- it comes very high and wipes out the beach at Biesanz, which is down the road from La Mansion Inn- also, if you drive, there may be a guy asking for $4 to "watch your car"- it is income for some people with no job-- don't think he does any damage if you don't pay but....

restaurants- Ronnie's is local, informal, good food,, but down a long rutted road (don't need 4
wheel drive though)
El Gran Escape (Quepos marina) just ok, but nice setting
Z seafood- also just okay
Water here is fine to drink right out of the tap, and electricity is same as in the states
Everybody warns about speeding- if cop stops you, don't pay a bribe or "the fine" to him- he
may take the money and still process the ticket
DO GO to the street market in Quepos on Friday p.m. and Saturday (lasts all hours)- all kinds
of produce and souvenir items

If you don't rent a car, bring a flashlight with you, so that cars see you at night walking the road

DUTY FREE WARNING- If you are making a connection after landing in U.S., then put duty free liquor you buy at San Jose duty free, into your luggage before you recheck luggage for your connecting flight- otherwise, you cannot take it on the connecting flight with you

We spent 4 glorious days at the end of our vacation. The hotel is in an idyllic location with stunning views over the bay. The main beach is within a 20 minute walk and another lovely beach a 15 minute walk away. The hotel runs a shuttle service to the main resort which is very convenient! The pool is fab ( a must for me! ) deep , clean and just big enough if you want to do a few laps!!!The staff work very hard also.
The only very MINOR fault was that we wanted to get a beer one night at about 2130hrs and all the bars were closed!
Would I recommend? Absolutely YES!

I truly appreciate the nice comments and am investigating why the bar seems to have closed early. The Cave Bar is normally open until at least 11PM - drinks are "on the house" for your next stay~
