My parents have visited Costa Rica for several years and have always stayed in the same resort in Manuel Antonio. Ironically, they've never stayed at Tulemar but had heard so many positive things about it over time that they recommended my fiance (now wife) and I stay there for our honeymoon.

Long story short, we went a few weeks ago and weren't disappointed. We spent the majority of our time in the Villa Mot Mot, and enjoyed just about everything. We LOVED the fact that there was a fridge, coffee pot and "kitchen" sink in our bedroom (it helped us to eat out less) and thought that the view was phenomenal. The facilities were great as well, and the fact that Tulemar has a private beach with FREE boogie board and kayak rentals was the icing on the cake.

The thing that made Tulemar stand out most, however, was our concierge. From day one he handled just about everything -- he even bought us a bag of coffee! He was so helpful it was actually hard to get used to: if we were walking down the street and he happened to pass by, he'd always stop and ask if we needed anything. He also called every day and made sure we were OK...it was like having room service all day long! He definitely made our trip smoother and gave us all the info we needed day to day.

One thing we found lacking was the communication between our concierge and his boss. Granted, my wife and I constantly changed our plans and sometimes stayed in our place late (making it hard for them to schedule our maid service), but even still -- just about every day you could tell that the two had a hard time staying on the same page. This affected us a little here and there -- we were initially told to contact both of them if we needed anything and that quickly got confusing -- but over the course of several days, one emerged as our point of contact and he did all the coordinating with his boss. They didn't tell us that, though, so it was at times hard to know just who we were to ask what and when -- and once in a while, both of them would make different plans for us without telling the other person. In the end it didn't matter, though -- because everything always worked out and none of the communication issues ever caused anything to go wrong.

Other than that, I give Tulemar two thumbs up. We had a WONDERFUL time -- and don't worry travelers: just because its the "rainy" season in July doesn't mean that it rains all the time. It was about 5 or 6 days before we had a major rain storm, and in our 12 day honeymoon we really only had two of them that lasted more than a few minutes!

Room Tip: Villa Mot Mot was great (we were there for 6 days), but we stayed in the bungalow for the first 2 ni...

Our family of 6 stayed at Casa del Mar for a week in July, and we could not have been more pleased. The house was very comfortable, with gorgeous views of the beach and the surrounding trees (w/ monkeys!). We even casually inquired about buying, which I think says more than anything further I can write.

Mauricio (concierge) was great for us ... arranging tours (ATVs and Whitewater rafting strongly recommended, Zip Lining was fun but fairly tame), reservations, getting my newborn a high chair and playpen, supermarket trips, pharmacy runs. He was extremely helpful and made every effort to go above and beyond, really did make the trip more fun and relaxing.

The kids loved the beach and boogie boarding, while the pool was more relaxing. The food was not great, but very adequate for beach/pool environment.

We really loved it and I could not recommend it more highly.

My husband, three year old daughter and I spent four nights in a Tulemar bungalow with a beautiful view of the ocean and tropical lushness on all sides. This was the conclusion of a 2.5 week visit to Costa Rica and what a great way to end our first trip to the country!

We thoroughly enjoyed Tulemar. Favorite memories include swimming and lounging at the family pool (enjoying mixed drinks, super fresh fish sandwiches from the grill at lunchtime); hanging out at the lovely beach (using the kayaks, watching the squirrel monkeys cavort in the trees, spotting lizards and hermit crabs with my daughter); and our dinners at Kapi Kapi and Ronnie's place.

We went during the rainy season and expected daily rain, and were quite lucky to have some rain-free days and generally lovely weather. The grounds were lovely, we loved our occasional sitings of sloths, a coati, lizards, and monkeys. The staff were uniformly friendly, genuinely warm, and very helpful. Though all spoke English well, they were also happy to help me practice my Spanish.

Chris, our excellent concierge, drove me to the grocery store for provisions on our first day and helped with any and all details throughout the stay, setting up restaurant and taxi reservations, and checking in periodically to make sure we had all that we needed. And David, who manages the beach front, was very helpful and kind.

We hiked to the beach on the south trail on our second day and since my husband was carrying our daughter in the carrier, used the very convenient Tulemar shuttle van to take us down and back from then on.

We highly recommend Tulemar and hope to return in the not too distant future!

I have to say that I am truly baffled by the stellar reviews garnered by Tulemar. Although it is a lovely property with a beautiful beach and stunning views, the accommodations themselves (we spent three nights in Bungalow 113) were shabby, uncomfortable and extremely dated. For starters, the bungalow was extremely basic and straight out of the 1970's. The living room furniture consisted of a few hard wooden chairs and a hard-as-concrete daybed; the bedroom housed two beds and a cheap, chipped dresser. Both rooms had huge, impossibly loud air conditioning units that made it impossible to speak in a normal tone of voice. The small TV was circa 1975, with a terrible, grainy picture. Perhaps worst of all were the bedsheets, which were rough and pilled; the bottom sheets were so old that they no longer had any elastic in the corners, and so would not stay on the mattress. The staff was very nice but not particularly professional. Our concierge, for instance, promised repeatedly to come to our bungalow early on our last morning to check us out, but never showed up or called. One night we mistakenly left our room key in the door; someone (presumably security) removed it and returned it to the front desk, but never called to tell us that it was there, so we spent an hour the next morning tearing the bungalow apart looking for it. The most disturbing incident occurred on our last night, when a security guard (I assume) scared the life out of me by knocking at our front door at 1:00am, ostensibly to remind us to lock the door. Bizarre. Perhaps the house rentals are nicer or better run, but the bungalows are certainly not the luxury accommodations that they purport to be.

Hi Loveto Travel4242…..thanks for taking the time to post your comments on your recent stay in one of our Tulemar Bungalows……I’m sure the reason that you are baffled by our stellar reviews is because your stay did not match the majority of our guests…..and for that I am truly very, very sorry. Our bungalows are exactly like they appear in our photos and our description does say…. “These bungalows were built in the late 1980's and may seem a little dated, but they are clean and well maintained”. They are also described as “Rustic with a jungle, tropical design”. We are very upfront about all of our properties and what to expect. The Tulemar Bungalows, the Buena Vista Villas and all of our larger “Private Villas” in Tulemar are all different in age, design and style, but they should all provide a wonderful experience and yours was not. Our concierge clearly failed in their responsibilities and we will follow up to make sure that does not happen again. The linens and air conditioning will be checked as well. Looking back in the reviews, on July 23 Amy P also stayed in Bungalow #113 and left a wonderful review about her stay, owing in part to her concierge, Chris, I’m sure. A last comment about the door and keys; yes, our security guards did find the keys in your door late one night, removed them and sent them to the front office. Not knowing when you wake up, the front desk did not want to call your room until they were sure they wouldn’t disturb you. The last night the guard said he actually found your door OPEN (not just unlocked) and didn’t know whether you or anyone else was in the room, that was the reason for the knock; we wanted to make sure you were OK. Again, my apologies that you were not happy with your stay in the Bungalows. Tulemar Dave

Our family of 5 stayed at Cas Las Nubes for two weeks from the end of July and had a wonderful time. The views from the house were breath-taking. Just from the house we saw three kinds of monkeys, sloths, a 7 foot boa constrictor, a whale and dolphins (ok, they were specks but we saw them!) bats and a scorpion! Tulemar has rich wildlife and the walk to the beach from the house was fun with the monkeys! The family had a blast playing in the waves on the beach, very peaceful there and the burgers and tropical salad at the beach cafe are the best! Danielle and the bar staff are very friendly and made good cocktails. Diego, Bill and Vanessa were very efficient and well organized, planning trips for us, grocery shopping and making sure the house was in good working order and clean. We thoroughly enjoyed the rafting and canopy tours, as well as the visit to the wildlife sanctuary with the rescued monkeys, all arranged by Diego on our request. Chris the private chef was very good although there was plenty of food! The private infinity edge pool was big enough to have plenty of fun and enjoy the views. The house is beautifully designed but the age recommendation is wise as it would be hazardous for anyone under 10! Thanks for a great time everyone and hopefully we shall return one day.

We spent 3 of our 10 night Costa Rican vacation at Tulemar in Casa Panorama North and what a stay it was! Everything was just perfect--the house was gorgeous; the property is amazing; the beach was stunning. Our daughters (ages 14, 11 and 8) didn't want to leave (well, nor did their parents!). After traveling for the previous week with no a/c, no tv, no wi-fi, and constant activity, the luxury of Tulemar felt all the more special. We had planned to do some activities in the area, but we were so content relaxing on the beautiful beach, playing in the waves, hiking the trails, that we never left! We will most certainly be back!! Thanks to Diego, Bill and Vanessa for all their efforts!

I agree with the other reviewers: the houses in Tulemar are beautiful, stocked with everything you'll need, and extremely well maintained by an incredibly attentive, generous and patient staff. We stayed with two adolescent kids, a 6-month-old and three adults and it was perfect for everyone. A dear friend referred me to Tulemar and we're so happy we listened!

As far as service goes, I was a bit concerned that the nearest pharmacy, etc. was a bit far out of town, but when my baby needed acetaminophen because she was teething - I only had to call the front desk and they had someone deliver it. Mauricio knew we were having breakfast and came to deliver it to us personally. Unheard of anywhere these days.

An incredible stay and we hope to do it again.
