My boyfriend - now fiance - and I stayed in the beautiful Monkey Villa (304) from June 7-14 this year (3 days into our trip, we became engaged!)
Michael was a *superb* concierge. He definitely went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed, planned all our adventures, and patiently helped us reschedule when we changed our minds.
We also had the pleasure of having Marlon (the restaurant's head chef) prepare us private dinners for 4 of our nights, which was culinary heaven and a blessing for my Celiac disease. Notable dishes were the lobster and mushroom risotto. What a treat!
This villa also lived up to its name! We were greeted by squirrel monkeys on several occasions and once by white-faced capuchins. Honestly, this property is a dream in biodiversity - we saw more wildlife just hanging out than we did on our (still excellent) guided tour in the Manuel Antonio national park. The beach is gorgeous. Every time we left the property for some adventure, we were thrilled to come back and just hang out on the sand. Very romantic!

We just returned home from an amazing trip to Costa Rica and we absolutely loved Tulemar!
Everything about this place is fantastic. If you are thinking of going there-- you should!! You will LOVE it!

The location is unbelievable beautiful! We saw tons of monkeys which my kids loved! The monkeys really were everywhere and so fun to watch them jump around and play.

Our villa was beautiful - very spacious with a unbelievable view of the ocean and the surrounding landscape. We enjoyed our lunch and dinners at the restaurant and the drink/ food service at the beach was also great! (Janet was fantastic and we loved seeing her at dinner every night :))

There were 4 pools and every things was easy to get to and find - we liked walking because thats when we would run into a cute group of monkeys playing in the trees but if we were ever tired and didn't feel like walking we would call for a ride and one of the drivers would be to pick us up in 2-3 minutes. The drivers were great! So nice and would even stop and point out wildlife as we were driving around.

The people that work at the property really make this place so special! Everyone was so fantastic and greeted us by name when they saw us around the property. It really felt like a home away from home.

we can't wait for a trip back to Tulemar

Tulemar Villas is very near to the other upscale hotels in Manuel Antonio and a short, 5-minute drive to the National Park. Of all the small, octagonal villas in Tulemar, reviews seemed to peg Villa Mot Mot as the best for close-up monkey-viewing, since it's situated higher up on the hill and is even with the top of a forest canopy that serves as a sort of "monkey highway". There are probably other villas that also have a good chance of monkey visits and whether or not you get the advertised, Class-A experience depends in part on luck, as monkeys don't operate on any set schedule nor do they adhere to a predictable route. But in our case, 3 days/nights at Mot Mot delivered on its promise.

The first afternoon, a troop of spider monkeys was hanging out for about a half hour in the trees just in front of our deck. Howlers could be heard lower in the valley, but not seen. The next morning around dawn, a few white-faced capuchin monkeys ran across the roof. At Tulemar's beach (free access included in the rental), we had a capuchin troop passing through during our second afternoon. Finally, on our last morning, only about an hour before we were planning to leave, we got the BIG experience: a troop of capuchins spent 20 minutes romping on our deck and rolling around in the hammock as we sat there beside them in awe.

Villa Mot Mot best lived up to its name, though, when an actual mot mot showed-up on the railing and hung-out for about five minutes. A mot mot is a better-than-robin-sized, rather colorful bird, by the way. We also saw toucans several times on the grounds.

The interior of Mot Mot seemed either newly updated or simply well maintained. The toilet kept running and needed a jiggle of the handle. We mentioned that on the way out and it may be fixed by now. Otherwise, the two queen beds and trundle worked well for mom, dad and our teenaged son. The a/c was great, although once a month, they shut-off electricity in that part of the country from 8am - 2pm (for maintenance??) and lucky us, it occurred during our visit. The pool, fortunately, is only a short hike up the hill from Mot Mot, so after burning part of the "black-out" on a tour, we chewed-up another hour of it in the water. The pool isn't as expansive nor as luxurious as those at other Costa Rica luxury hotels, but it's not terrible. Oh yeah, no bug problem here from what we could see.

The villas are privately-owned investment properties, but the management team runs the place like a resort with all the attentiveness you'd expect of an upscale hotel. They'll set-up activities for you and recommend good local restaurants (although the food at the in-house, open-air, pool-side restaurant wasn't bad nor unreasonable and come to think of it, we had monkeys in the tree right beside our table up there once, too!). You might save a few bucks eating off-property as we did one night. They also left us fresh bananas and a big watermelon and pineapple as a gift when we arrived.

The team gets in touch with you and emails a list of activities as soon as you book. You generally deal with the same person via email leading-up to your arrival and the response time to any questions is very quick. In our case, we booked a mangrove swamp boat tour while we were there, with the help of our excellent personal concierge, Al. We were also advised to wait until we got to Costa Rica to book raft trips, as the water level on rivers fluctuates. This was good advice, because by the time we got there, we didn't feel like the rafting anymore and didn't have to wiggle out of a booking.

The difference with this property comes in the payment, which is due in full some something like a month or two ahead of arrival. We booked kind of late in the game and grabbed the last 3 available dates for the month and so our full payment was due immediately. This is pretty much the standard with renting people's houses, but those used to hotels with 24-hour cancellation policies need to look elsewhere.

There are trails to the beach, but like many of the better Costa Rica resorts, you're better off taking the staff up on a free shuttle ride to and from. This is place is arranged in the vertical so everybody has a nice view of the ocean---and a long, hard climb up from water's edge. We had driven a rental car to Manuel Antonio and opted to simply drive ourselves down the hill which was no problem since there was plenty of parking at the bottom near the entrance to the beach. Oh yeah, here's a nice touch: there is a ton of free gear available at the beach to Tulemar guests, including boogie boards and kayaks. There's also a tent set-up to serve snacks, as well as a bar and several nice, umbrella-covered tables under the trees. Order the cheesy tortilla chips (with chicken or beef). We got two for three people and could barely finish them. Very yum.

About the only thing I would warn you about involves the assertion by Tulemar staffers that there are tons of restaurants within walking distance of the front of the hotel. That may be true, but consider that any walking must by design also include a long, steep climb up from Mot Mot (even more of a hike from most of the other villas which are even farther down the mountainside). For us 50-somethings, this was not in the cards, especially in muggy, warm weather. We drove.

Overall, this was a great way to experience wildlife up close and personal. I wouldn't recommend just sitting around the room, however. Manuel Antonio National Park is right down the road and there is plenty of wildlife there as well. We watched with delight, squirrel monkeys in the trees there, raccoons on the beach and an uber-large crocodile that swam to within ten yards of the beach, forcing swimmers to head for land!

You can't be sure of of the monkey pay-off, but it seemed to us that Mot Mot probably does offer the best shot at the up-close monkey experience. If you're lucky, Mot Mot gives you a unique opportunity for indelible vacation memories.

Room Tip: Villa Mot Mot is renowned for its monkey experience and it appeared to us to be about the best of the villas for a chance at a close encounter. I would try to book this villa first when looking at Tulemar.

Hi pabirds.....thank you so much for the wonderful and detailed review of your stay in Villa Mot Mot in Tulemar.....now you know why this little villa is booked almost 6-8 months in advance.....except for little holes in the schedule like you found.......and thanks for your comment on the wildlife.....Tulemar is 33 acres and you're bound to see lots of wildlife during your stay with us.....along the roadways....on the hiking trails....at the beach or 4 pools....or even the restaurant......but not necessarily on the balcony of your villa......one of my favorite stories is a phone call I received a couple of years ago from a guest...."we're planning our day tomorrow and we wanted to know what time the monkeys will come by our bungalow so that we don't miss them?"......well....you are right....this is wildlife....they are not on a schedule.....and you just never know....but the location of Villa Mot Mot adds to possibility of getting to see lots of wildlife....right from your deck.....another note......remember.....we do provide shuttle service within the resort....less than half of our guests have a rental car.....it's an easy walk down to our beach.....and you can always take the resort shuttle back to your villa....or take the shuttle to our front gates.....where there really are over 10 restaurants within a two block radius of the front gates.....plus 2 ATM's and a grocery store.....thanks again for booking with us at tulemar.com and we'd love to have you back!

Casa Mirador exceeded our expectation in every way. The view from our terrace was so spectacular, we often brought dinner in so we could enjoy the breathtaking sunset, ocean and mountain views. The house itself was perfect....beautifully decorated, incredibly comfortable and immaculate. The surfing instructors/lessons were amazing, even our 8yr.old was riding waves like a pro by the end of his lesson! As for our guide when we visited Manuel Antonio Nat'l Park- fabulous. The rafting trip through Rafiki Safari was fantastic, the guides were incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and fun!! You and your staff truly go above and beyond to make sure your guest's stay is unforgettable-thank you! We will most definitely be back!!

Room Tip: Casa Mirador has the most breathtaking views of the ocean, and mountains!

Our family (myself, husband and our 8 year old daughter) spent three nights at Tulemar in Casa Panorama South and had an amazing visit. We highly recommend Tulemar, it has so much to offer. Kimberly and Tom were amazing in helong us plan our trip before arriving and then booking excursions for us while we were there. They know all of the guides and set us up with perfect people for horseback riding and a trip into Manuel Antonio park. And the monkeys and sloths really do come right through the property; we woke up every morning to the sounds of the howler monkeys. All of the staff are friendly and knowledgeable. We had a wonderful stay and highly recommend Tulemar and especially Casa Panorama! The private beach for guests is also a wonderful amenity, it is quite spectacular at low tide!
