My wife and I planned a sort of last minute trip to Costa Rica for our anniversary. We only decided to go about 8 weeks ahead of time after hearing only good things about other people's trips to this beautiful country. I had no idea where to stay or what part of the country to go to since we only had a week to spend. After doing a lot of research on Tripadvisor we decided to go to Manuel Antonio. I was very impressed with the reviews of Tulemar. Unfortunately because of our last minute plans, we could only get 4 nights at Tulemar but we took what we could get. A Tulemar Bungalow was available which is just what we wanted.
The Bungalow itself: My wife and I wanted something different. We've stayed in our share of 5 star hotels, but we wanted an adventure. The bungalows had 360 views of the ocean and the rainforest. It reminded us of a luxury cabin in the Adirondacks, rustic but with all the amenities. We were visited by a group of monkeys one morning making their way down to the beach. A monkey stared right at my wife through the window. The views were breathtaking. The bungalow had a great shower, nice kitchenette and was very comfortable. The bed was comfy too and sleeping was great, especially listening to the soothing rain one night. Only problem was a leaky a/c unit which was fixed promptly. The maids kept the room spotless. Internet was excellent.
The Beach: The private beach was fun. The staff was very helpful with setting up the lounges. We saw a sloth in the trees two days in a row and plenty of monkeys in the trees. Watched sand crabs and hermit crabs. The ocean was the warmest I had ever been in and the waves were lots of fun. Very clean. The food was ok. We only went to one pool, the one at the restaurant just down from my bungalow. It was very refreshing and got to watch the monkeys play on the roof of the lounge area one afternoon. Was never too crowded and the view from the pool area was great.
The Staff: I can't say enough about the staff. Ashley was our consierge and she was the best. She called everyday to ask us if we needed anything. She took my wife down to the store in the pouring rain the first night to buy food and snacks for the room. The day we checked out, we went on a tour in the morning. She got our bags from our bungalow while we were gone and held them for us until we got back. Her level of service was impeccable. Every employee was friendly and helpful, from the front office staff, to the shuttle drivers, to the restaurant staff to the beach staff....everyone was great
The property: It is built on a hill. The walking from the top where the office is to the beach is in most places steep. I was able to walk from our bungalow to the office without much problem, but the walk from the beach back to our bungalow was out of the question....too steep. The shuttle service was excellent. Call 10 minutes ahead of time and they'll pick you up and take you wherever you want to go on the property. Once outside the gate, walking was no problem. Not a lot of sidewalks, so you just have to be careful of the traffic in spots. Lots of restaurants within walking distance.
Weather: We went during rainy season, but no problems. Plan your activities in the morning and you'll be fine. It never rained the whole day. One day was rainless and the rest it would start raining about 3 in the afternoon and usually last for 2-3 hours. It only rained once the whole night.
Overall a wonderful experience that we'll never forget. Looking forward to our next visit
