“Great Small Hotel in Manuel Antonio!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 May 2014

We stayed here for our honeymoon and had the greatest stay! It is down a small road - which seems to be were most of the upscale hotels are located. It really feels like you are in the jungle, since the rooms are setup as bungalows, so only two rooms to each bungalow, one on the top and one on the bottom. It felt very secluded and private - with only twelve rooms in the "rainy" season, it felt like we almost had the place to ourselves! The rooms were very clean, no bugs even with leaving the doors open for about a 1/2 hour in the evening. The beds were very comfy and we are very picky about hotel beds. The view from room #9 was of jungle and the ocean - perfect! The tiny bachelor kitchen was nice - but we never used it. The staff were great - by the pool they were very accomodating and fun to talk to! The best part is they bring you breakfast to your room at no additional charge, and also bring snacks, lunch, dinner or even drinks to your room at no additional charge! Great for a honeymoon. The pool was perfect with a great view. Highly recommend to anyone.

We love Makanda by the Sea. We were very pleased with the location, the room, the food and the service. Marvelous Marvin was our favorite and took great care of us during the trip. I can understand why some are bothered by the walk and stairs, but we are fairly young and in shape, so it really did not phase us. We loved the walk down to the public beach and the private beach, and walked up the hill to the main road most every day for a stop at the supermarket or one of the many fantastic restaurants. On food, I must say that the food at Makanda is fantastic. The breakfast every morning was probably my favorite. Two words: French Toast. (My husband also loved the Huevos Rancheros, but I am love sweet stuff in the morning). The fresh juice they brought was always so fresh and unique. We had lunch there twice and thought it was great as well (great portions and so fresh). We stayed in Villa 10 and found it to be clean and comfortable with an incredible view. The amenities at this place are so well thought-out: huge closet, large bathroom, nice kitchen, ipod docking station, free reliable internet and phone. Most importantly, we felt very safe at Makanda. There was always someone at the front gate and they got to know us quickly. I felt like they paid attention to where we were going - if we were getting in a cab, etc. (Not is a weird way, just a respectful manner of taking care of their guests). Thanks to everyone at Makanda for making our first Costa Rica experience the one that we will never forget.

Room Tip: Travel agent suggest Villa 10 and we were very pleased. Great view. I am sure that they would all be...

The high review scores are well deserved. This hotel is set in the unspoiled jungle and each villa is large, private, luxurious and well equipped. There is a very nice private beach but be prepared to walk the 350 steps down to it. The pool and restaurant (by the side of the pool) is of the highest quality. The drinks and food is surprisingly inexpensive and of excellent quality. The views are superb from the villas and the restaurant/pool area.
Well worth the extra to ensure that you are just that little bit outside the rather busy centre of Manuel Antonio. An excellent venue for part of a honeymoon or romantic get away. We stayed for 3 nights but would to have stayed an extra couple of nights

Room Tip: We had villa 6 - very large and superb views

My wife and I stayed in a studio room for 6 nights in April.
It was the best hotel experience we've ever had.
Pros:
-stunning view, just incredible. You will never just get used to it.
-room was beautiful with floor to ceiling windows facing the ocean
-breakfast is personally delivered to your room after you order off menu by phone. Loved the privacy.
-Infinity pool/jacuzzi was incredible with amazing view overlooking forest and ocean. We never use the pool at hotels when there's an ocean nearby but it was so nice there we used it everyday. Mostly at night.
-the Drinks! Oh man. I had almost all of the tropical mixed drinks on the menu & they were all absolutely incredible! The staff would cut up fresh tropical fruit. God they were tasty. Daquiris, pina colada, caiprinha
-food was good, breakfast & dinner.
-the staff were incredible, very attentive & helpful. Usually I just write "staff was nice" in reviews but these people really show you what good customer service looks like

Cons:
You have to leave.

Where do I start? This was an amazing place to stay in the Quepos area, tucked away off a twisty road. My bf and I stayed in Villa 7 for 3 nights, which is right under the pool area. Granted there are a lotttt of steps, so I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone who is disabled or just plain lazy lol lucky for us we found a shortcut to the pool so we didn't have to climb as much everyday. Please note - this is less like a hotel and more like your own little private Villa minutes away from the beach, with your own concierge service. Once you arrive, there is a belhop who literally carried our heavy bags over his head to the check in area, and then to our room. The roads inside the hotel are made of gravel and they don't allow taxis inside, so to get a taxi you have to walk to the entrance.

Pool area was great. There are only 11 villas, so it was never crowded. Great negative edge and awesome poolside service. They have happy hour from 3:30 - 6:30 which was cool.

Villa was great - the bed was very comfortable and our balcony had an amazing ocean view. The bathroom was clean and the AC unit worked well. Breakfast was amazing, we always got the huevos rancheros with fruit. (Don't get the bacon, they don't cook it fully.) The cable worked great, and HBO, TBS, and maybe one other station was in English. This villa also comes with a hammock. We were awakened by the toucans and howler monkeys one morning at 5am, so my bf ran out by the balcony and was able to spot 3 of them. ( I missed it :(....le sigh), but I did get to spot the cappuccino monkeys one morning.

We ventured off the property our last night there to the seafood restaurant Mari Luna which had excellent, fresh food. They were busy with tourists at the tables, and locals at the bar area. The restaurant looks like it has a beautiful view, but it was too dark for me to tell. We took a taxi to and from the restaurant which was about $8 USD and was coordinated by the receptionist.

Overall, this was an amazing experience. I planned this entire trip so my bf was quite pleased with the Makanda which veered from our normal luxury hotel stay, and making it more of a jungle 5 star stay. Felt more authentic. We will be back.

FYI: use AnywhereCostaRica if you need help planning you trip.

We loved our room with a beautiful view of both the jungle and ocean. Loved the architectural details of the wood and glass doors you could throw open to the outside. The fans and air conditioning assured you were going to be comfortable. So did the bed and sofa and the hammock that had my name on it.
You do climb a lot of steps up and down to get from reception or restaurant/pool area to your room though and that can be taxing. Our room was always clean and the extra touches of fresh flowers was nice.Breakfast was brought to your room and even though we had an early excursion and check out time, someone was able to serve us. Choices were good and all included fresh fruit. There was a kitchen and you could cook if you so desired. Coffee staples were provided and appreciated. The food at the restaurant was good and the service excellent. Everyone was very helpful and friendly at the resort no matter what position they held.
Loved the pool. There was cable but we were on vacation and really didn't bother watching. . This was a very pleasant, peaceful time. We didn't venture into the downtown but stayed at the resort except for a excursion to the National Park. What a lovely beach Manuel Antonio is. We were glad out agent choose this as they do inspections of the properties and would not put us where they would not stay.

My wife and I stayed at Makanda for nine days. Our typical day started at 6:00 A.M. We would take a walk on the resorts property and wait see white faced monkeys coming down from the hill above. Just walk to the center of the property and listen, the monkeys make a lot of noise crashing through the trees. Occasionally we did not even have to leave or deck in the morning to see wild life. Next we would return from our morning walk to a wonderful breakfast delivered to our room. The breakfast was always well prepared sometimes a bit later than expected but who cares your on vacation. After breakfast we usually went exploring a for the morning, sometime on Makandas beach which we felt was the best in the area. Much quieter and no vendors bothering you. The walk to the beach is long and downhill but if you take your time is not too bad and if you go slow and pay attention you can see a variety of wild life. We went to the park one day but was way too crowded and only saw almost trained animals that are fed by people at the park. If you want to see wild life Makandas property was better than the park. The afternoon heat in Costa Rica is extreme and best spent by the pool. Let the pool and restaurant staff spoil you for the afternoon with complimentary sorbet. Javier and Marvin are always attentive to your needs. They are always there to refill your ice water and inform you of wild life on the property. One day we watched a mother sloth and her baby while having lunch. The view from the pool is beautiful. At 3:30 sharp happy hour starts. We usually had one of Makandas appetizers or a chargrilled pizza. The food at the hotel was better than most restaurants in town so save the cab fare or avoid driving at night in Quepos which is very dangerous as the cab driver do not respect normal driving rules. Our room was clean and very comfortable and we were never bothered by others at the resort because the buildings are separated and well built. We had a lower unit with a great view of the jungle and ocean. Yes there were many older guest including ourselves so if your looking for a wild time Mankanda may not be for you, but if you want to relax and unwind there is no better setting in the Quepos area. Remember there are only 11 units at the hotel. If you need anything just ask Darwin at the front desk or Javier at the pool, or leave a note for the house keeper. I really can not think of anything negative to say about our stay. We have traveled a lot in our lives and Makanda is one of the top experience we have ever had, I have worked in the hospitality business all my life and ran one of the top restaurants in the state of Wisconsin so I know what I am talking about. The next time we visit Makanda we will not be driving. There are flights from the airport to just outside Quepos and a taxi can be taken from there to the hotel. Driving in Costa Rica is nerve wracking, and dangerous for those who are used to normal driving regulations.

Room Tip: All the rooms a beautiful. We had a studio and were very pleased although I was jealous of the rooms...
