“Spacious, modern, comfortable - recommended”
Reviewed 22 August 2017 for a stay in August 2017

My family (children 7, 14, 16, 18) and I spent 4 nights at Casa Alta. The house is exceptionally comfortable, spacious and well equipped - it was the perfect choice for our time in Man Ant.

Several large decks and hammocks meant that everyone had their own space to spend quiet time, and all were sheltered and usable in heavy rain. And very nice modernised bathrooms were great to arrive home to after a day rafting or walking.

The house manager and cleaning were perfect, solving a couple of minor niggles immediately, and communication during the booking and pre-trip process was excellent.

Highly recommended!

Hi Phillip,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are always grateful for tips on how to make the villa better or improve our all round service. Always a pleasure to host guests from England (lived there 20 years). Olivier

“Great location and well designed home”

This was our second visit to CR (went to Puerto Viejo 3 yrs ago) and overall enjoyed our stay at Casa Alta and Manuel Antonio. The location is excellent and the house layout is good such that all our family had their separate areas (3 children - 16, 17 and 20). The Master bedroom area was really nice with great deck and excellent views. The kitchen/living area was well laid out and we really didn't find lack of AC in this area a problem. The outside pool / lounge area was relaxing with a nice balance of sun and shade. As mentioned in prior reviews Natalia was great and was a great help in many areas. Also nice to have the maid clean house every day. Most of the feedback on improvements has been mentioned in previous reviews but here are some suggestions:
- the kitchen area/appliances is dated and needs upgrading for this 20 yr old house (microwave, coffee pot, fridge, etc)
- the only dining table is outside which is great but a fan, citronella candles, or tiki torches would go a long way here if your group wants to be outside in the evening hours
- several reviews have already mentioned the "fishbowl" of the 2nd master bathroom which could be easily resolved by glazed glass or simple plantation shutters
- as I mentioned the kitchen/living area was great but screens on the doors or windows would allow you to open on both ends to create a nice "breeze" if needed

Much of stuff mentioned here can be easily remedied and I would have no hesitation in returning

Thank you John for pointing out some improvements. We try and provide improvements every year and sometimes we miss things out ! Although all bedrooms have AC , we plan on extending this to the lounge area. Thanks for taking the time to point out some things that have an easy solution.

“Great house - would've liked a better location”

Casa Alta is great. It is very spacious with plenty of separate and private sleeping rooms. The air conditioning in the bedrooms worked great - but remember there is no A/C in the common areas. This wasn't a problem, however with the breeze blowing through. I would recommend adding a dining table inside. As it was, there was only a small bar with barstools for dining inside. There was a large and nice dining table out on the patio, but mosquitoes were an issue at night.

Natalia was phenomenal! She communicated everything ahead of time and was great while in CR. She provided booking for our zip line tours and recommendations for others. As we were leaving, we even had a situation where we left some valuables at the house and she arranged for a driver to bring them to us - almost all the way to San Jose.

My only "regret" is that in the description of the house and the pics - it makes it look like the house is a bit more secluded and private. It is not! From our balcony off the master bedroom, we could see right down into the neighbors house, including their bedroom. Awkward! This house is VERY nice, but it is in a neighborhood with houses right next to it. Also, it is very far from the ocean - you can see it, but it's just past the water tanks on the neighbor's rooftops and the power lines, and cell towers, etc. - you get the picture! The pictures that are posted from the owner are taken from angles that don't really give you the true picture. It is not a big enough negative to not go back - I was just expecting something different.

“Absolutely Gorgeous”

From the bedrooms to the pool, the view from the balconies to the hammocks...this place was fantastic! The house is nicely updated with lots of extras, including a maid (who does laundry) and an in-house coordinator to help you organize your excursions. This place was relaxation in paradise. The house is within walking distance of several restaurants, bus stops, and even a small grocery store which will deliver for a fee. We were so excited to stay here!

A word of caution: if you have mobility issues, please know that this is a split level home with a steep incline to get to the house, as are most homes in Costa Rica. Lots of stairs!

Liked best: It's nicely updated and peaceful. There's plenty of space, too.
Liked least: The steep incline, but that can't be helped. The dogs next door are a bit loud, too.

“All we could have asked for in a vacation villa”

I stayed at Casa Alta with a group of 8 other friends for a week and it was everything I could have asked for in a vacation villa. It was spacious, clean, and comfortable. Even with that many people, I never felt crowded and had plenty of options to find a quiet space when I wanted one. The manager was very accommodating and checked in with us regularly to see if we wanted or needed anything. The housekeeper was very sweet and took great care of us and the villa when she came by. My favorite amenity was the pool and the patio area - it provided the perfect gathering spot for the entire group as well as a great spot to sit and watch the sunrise or the monkeys who visited a few times. Honestly there were no real negatives - the shower temperature was hard to control (hot and cold) but duck in at the right moment, take care of business, and it's fine. There are two hammocks on the upper level and I would have to say they take a close second to the pool. The villa is close to grocery stores (one of which also delivers to the villa) and within walking distance of several good restaurants and shops. I highly recommend this villa to anyone looking for a nice, comfortable place to stay while visiting Manuel Antonio.

“Very nice house, private, comfortable and a good value”

We are a family of 5, me my wife and three children ages 16, 13, and 9. We stayed at Casa Alta in June 2015. It is a very nice and well kept property. The property manager and housekeeper were very friendly and very accommodating. We had more than enough space inside the house and all the balconies and deck space was a nice bonus, far more than you'd get at a hotel or condo. My kids especially but all us enjoyed having the private pool. The location of the property was a little bit far for walking to and from most of the popular restaurants and the beach areas. However, the supermarket, bus stop and taxi stand was only about 100 yards away from the house. Once we learned the bus schedule it was very easy to get wherever we wanted to go fairly quick and without a lot of hastle. All in this property was a very good fit for my family and a good fit for our budget. Our stay at Casa Alta was a very positive and good experience and I would recommend Casa Alta as a good property for other families.
