We had such a great time here. We visited in the afternoon and rented chairs and an umbrella from Elizabeth. She is right next to the surfing lessons sign. She offered us 3 chairs for 4000 colones and she walked across the street to fetch cold drinks for us. She brought us batidos and frozen fruit juices. Excellent service and so friendly. The beach itself is amazing. Soft sand, gentle surf which is perfect for young kids and warm, warm water. So much nicer than the beaches in Hawaii. It was true paradise! The beach wasn't very crowded when we visited, which was really nice. Towards the end of the day, a group of young men started a soccer game right next to us, and that was really fun to watch.

One caution - we got ripped off by one of the guys in the yellow shirts who charged us 2000 colones to park our car on the street. He stopped us as we were parking our car and told us it was 2000 colones to park. I was surprised as it appeared to be a public street, but he showed us an official looking sign that he placed on our windshield and told us it was 2000 colones to park. I should have known better, but we fell for it. Lesson learned. Will be smarter next time.

We enjoyed our stay in Manuel Antonio, but I'm not sure I would go back. The park is very small and crowded and everything we saw we had seen elsewhere except for the up close white face monkeys. It's also a hike to get to thus area and there's not a lot to do. I much preferred La Fortuna/Arenal.

My husband and I did not hire a guide or go on a tour through the national park. The perk to having a guide is they are in this park every day and know where to look for animals. The guides also bring large telescopes so you can get a good, close-up view of a sloth, monkey, etc. It would have been fun to look through a telescope, but we didn't think it was necessary. We spotted things on our own, or would stop and look the direction that a guide was pointing.

The hike itself is easy on a gravel path. We saw some people with serious hiking boots and others with flip flops - wear what you're comfortable in. Definitely bring water - it's hot in there! And bring a swimsuit because the beaches at the end of the hike are the most beautiful in the area! There are changing rooms and restrooms at the end of the path just before you get to the beach area. We even saw people walking through the nature path with coolers - headed directly for the beach. I don't blame them.

It's just sad to see what could be an incredible place turned into a shallow tourist attraction! The area is also unclean, which is an unusual situation for Costa Rica, special if you are inside a national park!
The playa espadilla sur, that is a bit more away from the crowds is quit nice!

We rented chairs and an umbrella here two different days and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The best pina coladas of the whole trip!
