Fantastic hotel. Amazing room (deluxe suite), beautiful property, awesome pool, great staff. Only minor drawback was that the food was no more than decent although we were not expecting a gourmet/foodie experience so it wasn't really disappointing.

The Manuel Antonio area offers a wide variety of activities from beautiful beaches, to rainforest hiking with abundant wildlife, to zip lines, to mangrove tours.

Highly recommended!

My 17-year-old son and I had an incredible six-day stay at Gaia in June, 2009, and I recommend it highly to those wanting a Costa Rica vacation complete with tasteful and beautiful accomodations, incredible food, and an attentive and helpful staff. And all in a certified eco-friendly luxury hotel, no less! It was an unexpected treat that the hotel was adults only because somehow I had missed that on the website. (There was no problem in having my teenaged son with me, though, since he is mature, respectful, and an experienced traveler.) I was grateful that there were no large, loud groups and no families with small children who needed extra attention from the staff. (I love some loud people and many small children, but they do not contribute to my relaxation!)

We were also happy to be only about five minutes from the beach and always found the staff ready and willing to give us a ride down from Gaia, which is on the highest hill in the area and surrounded by lush, tropical forest. The beach area, which borders a road with sidewalk merchants and local businesses, was relatively crowded with tourists, including quite a few young college age Americans, so we were always happy that we had our lovely hotel on the hill to retreat to later each day. We noticed that there are no beach front hotels, which I consider a mark of good planning on the part of Costa Rican officials, but we also noticed that the hotels and motels closer to the beach looked crowded and difficult to access by car or foot, thanks to the traffic. Some of them were also very close together and looked almost on top of each other.

The restaurant staff were our favorite employees because they were so kind and attentive at every meal, and the wine list was excellent. Other staffers were also very helpful in making arrangments for our tour of the Manuel Antonio National Park and for a boat tour off the beach, complete with snorkeling. One of the owners was usually present on the grounds and checked in with us frequently to see if we had any unmet needs. He was even kind enough to give us a complementary ride back to San Jose when we had to leave because he was headed there to pick up a friend from the airport.

We enjoyed our entire stay at Gaia immensely and would not hesitate to recomment it to others. In fact, my daughter has just become engaged to be married, and one of the first things she mentioned was a possible honeymoon at Gaia in a few months. Apparently she was impressed by our descriptions of the stay and by our photos of this beautiful hotel in the rain forest!

Unfortunately my boyfriend and I are unable to visit Gaia Hotel & Reserve over this New Years due to a work conflict. Catalina from reservations was beyond accommodating and kindly credited our card back even though the reservation was non-refundable according to the hotel's policy (standard practice for Costa Rica hotels during high season).

Though we are unable to go this year, we are looking forward to traveling to Costa Rica next year and will certainly be staying there in 2011.

The Gaia is a small hotel, the style is very nice, modern and elegant.
The rooms are also very nice, modern, luxurious. Be aware that the studios are all located on the ground floor. The suites are spacious and the villas are huge. Of course the rooms have all amenities you expect from a luxury hotel.
The pool area is nice, but very small (yes you have 3 pools, but they are all small and the sun decks are small as well).
The restaurant is on the top floor and you have a great view on the coast. The food is really very delicious. And the servcie is great, all waiters are extremely friendly, they smile all the time, they care about you and do whatever they can to accomodate you. Sometimes you have to wait a bit long for the food, but you can excuse that because they are all so charming.
Also the other staff of the hotel (front desk etc.) are all extremely friendly and helpfull, so again when you have to wait sometimes a bit long, they make you still feel comfortable.
The gym is unfortunately a bit weak for a luxury hotel, it is located in a small bungalow which seems to be very old.
Another downside: the beaches are all 5-6 miles away, so you always have to catch the shuttle which is time-consuming and needs always to be organised.
Overall definitely one of the best hotels in Costa Rica, a true small luxury hotel!

My boyfriend and I went to Costa Rica for a long weekend and by chance booked at Gaia. It was great. Our room had a sitting room, bedroom and tub/shower that looked out over the rain forest. Amazing. The staff was vvery helpful with everything from room service to planning our daily trips. I love the open air restaurant and the food was very good. We would spend each evening sitting at the tiny bar chatting with other guests and the owners themselves. That was a nice treat and they are very friendly and sincerely interested in your feedback. We also has massages in the beautiful spa that were top notch. I enjoyed my stay so much that I took my teenage son back here again in 2008 and he enjoyed it as well. I'd highly recommend Gaia.

The property is lovely. The view and surroundings are stunning. That being said here is the rest of the story. The rooms (suites) are bland with oversized furntiure and poor taste in decor. The hotel staff tries hard but they need much more training to be considered good. ( there are a couple of great employees but far and few between). This property is several miles from the beach and the park. (although looking at the website the activities look much closer) The food is good ,,not great. Definetly did not meet or exceed or expectations in any form. If you are expecting a 5 star hotel this is not it.

We are surprised and somewhat sad that the review of this guest did not meet their expectations. All of our rooms can be seen on our web site and the design and layout have been carefully thought out with furniture custom made here in Costa Rica.
We are a seven minute drive to the beautiful beaches of Manuel Antonio and the National Park. We state this on the banner headline on our web site. And our chauffeur is available all day to take guests at their convenience and with our compliments.
I am not sure which employees did not meet with the guests expectations but all of our current staff have been here almost from the beginning and we are proud to include all of them in the Gaia family.
In any event, we thank our guest for sharing their feelings and look forward to the possibility of hosting them here again in an effort to correct their misgivings.

We had the most wonderful stay in Gaia . We are seasoned travelers, but we admit there is not much we would like to improve. The friendly and very helpful staff made an effort to make our stay exceptional. The staff was proactive and the service was very personal and service oriented trying to make your stay enjoyable. The waiter at the pool bar knew exactly when to come with a delicious fruit stick. The owners are very much present and are adding a personal touch to the Gaia experience. David is an adorable host who makes sure that every guest feels at home and is taking care of.The room or rather villa was spectacular. Its like a complete house with a roof terrace overlooking the forrest and the ocean. Providing you the space and environment to relax and enjoy your romantic holiday in privacy
We had a beautiful sunset from the Bar with music in the background, perfect...
The food in the restaurant was very good and most of the evenings we ate at the Gaia restaurant. One evening they even prepared the fish we caught the same day.
The tour in Manuel Antonio with William the biologist was very detailed and excellent, the beaches are beautiful and quiet ( at least the beginning of December)We strongly recommend this hotel and we are determined to come back soon.
