“Great location, cute rooms”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 January 2014

This hotel was the risk of our trip (as it had some mixed reviews on tripadvisor) but we really enjoyed it here! Lorena the manager was super friendly and helpful. The rooms were small, but cute and the pool was sufficient. The real benefit was the location, as it was right across from a supermarket and right next to the best restaurant in manuel antonio (la milagra). Also a good amount of bars are right in this area as well. It is a 5 minute cab ride down to the beach area (and national park) and it is super easy to get a cab. Best of all breakfast was made to order every morning by the pool which we really liked. Only negatives was the bed was slightly uncomfortable and the AC was very hard to regulate (either super hot in room or freezing). Other than that we really liked it here and definitely recommend it

Room Tip: Our room was "C" and was nice. Huge shower and working flatscreen TV

We had a great stay at this hotel. We stayed there for one night. We were upgraded to the Apt room which was very big for two people. The room was very comfortable and has a nice view of the ocean. The hotel is not walking distance to the beach. It is a short 5-10 minute drive. Walking is not recommended as coming back you will have to climb a steep hill. The staff was very friendly and the hotel also has a nice parking lot in the back. The breakfast was included in our stay and was decent.

We're a couple of Costa Ricans on the first trip to Manuel Antonio. It was great! Personnel at the hotel are very friendly and recommend places to go around that are good and at a right price. Next time I'm in here, I will book in this hotel whether I'm coming with family, couple or friends.

This was the 4 th time we stayed at Mandarina . We spent 2 weeks there this time from the end of nov, to the first week on December .. We like the place very much.. Sure , it's not a 5 star hotel..But who cares ! You're in Beautiful Manuel antonio ! Who wants to stay in a fancy resort !!! Mandarina is clean , the rooms are just fine , having a little fridge in the room helps too..the breakfast is good and served in a very nice area.. And yes , we have always seen monkeys there ! . The place his under new management I believe , . The manager Lorena is really great and very accommodating Also very professional . The ladies cooking the breakfast Ala and Marivel ( not sure that's the correct spelling ) are both very nice and pleasant . They were very accommodating with us.. The only minor issue was, the shower had very low pressure , not enough of an issue to tell the management .. We dealt with it just fine .. The rates for this hotel are really reasonable too. So there's nothing to complain about .. We will be back next year for sure . Can't wait !!

Room Tip: La Mandarina is very well located , close to a lot of good restaurants.. Bus stop is across the stre...

Hotel Mandarina had the perfect mix of reasonable price and location. It's a cute place with just twelve rooms, and you get a real key! It's like having your own apartment, and the standard was just as nice as the studio my friend had (my bathroom was a titch smaller).

Some people were complaining about the included breakfast. It's a first world problem to complain about walking ten steps out of your room to eat eggs, toast, papaya, pineapple, etc. and drink tea on a patio, surrounded by nature.

The staff was great, and gave very helpful advice on where to go and will arrange tours for you.

It's true that the wi-fi only truly works near the lobby, but there were times it worked in my room (which was F).

My only two dings were the water pressure in the shower (they gotta replace that showerhead, stat!) and that you can hear everyone walking by in the morning due to the way the rooms are situated near the main staircase.

But guess what? That doesn't matter because you're in PARADISE and monkeys are just a heartbeat away!!!

Staff are so nice and friendly at this hotel! They went out of the way to make us feel welcome! The breakfast was somewhat basic but better than no breakfast! The pool and patio both feel like being in the jungle.
Studios have a fridge, which is handy.
I gave 4 star ratings because updates are needed to make this place perfect. the wifi in the rooms is spotty at best....here one day ( with a so-so signal) and gone the next. I spent a lot of time sitting by the lobby to get internet. The air conditioners are older and noisy. And the toilet does not flush well and sink does not drain well.
These are minor complaints though...the hotel really is a great value!

Room Tip: If its low season, ask for a free upgrade to a studio.

I have spent two days on Mandarina and the overall experience was nice. The hotel is close to Manuel Antonio Park and many nice restaurants. The rooms are a bit old (air conditioning very noisy), but very close to nature and it has a nice pool. I missed internet in the room (only close to the pool and in the lobby). I also missed a better breakfast: guests could only choose one option among three and it left me hungry. All in all, I had a good rest and enjoyed Manuel Antonio as I expected.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hotel Mandarina is a small boutique hotel. It has a history in Manuel Antonio since the early 1990s. It has previously been known as Hotel El Dorado Mojado and Hotel Kekoldi. In 2007, the 12 unit hotel has been given the new name Hotel Mandarina. Mandarina is known as a small orange, like a tangerine, in Costa Rica. Hotel Mandarina is located in Manuel Antonio, just outside the small Pacific coast port town of Quepos. We are at the highest elevation on the main road about halfway between Quepos and Manuel Antonio National Park. If you choose to drive, you can park your rental car in our secure lot behind the reception building. Manuel Antonio is only 3 1/2 hours by car or bus from San Jose, so long as you take the shortest route. Faster yet is a 20 minute plane ride from San Jose on Nature Air or Sansa Airlines. Quepos and Manuel Antonio are fairly easy to navigate since there are only a few main roads. We are just 3 km away from some of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica with the entrance to Manuel Antonio National Park at the end of the main road. A twenty minute walk down the secondary road from the hotel will bring you to a secluded beach. The local bus stops 50 yards from the hotel and brings you to the main beach or Manuel Antonio National Park in 5 minutes. There are several restaurants and cafes within walking distance as well as services like supermarket, bank/ATM, bars, yoga/spa, gym, and souvenir stores among others. ... more   less
