“Beautiful in every way”

While in CR, we visited Monteverde, Arenal, and Samara. All three places were absolutely amazing, but the highlight to our trip (by far!) was staying at Rancho el Rio and Casa Cielo (both houses are owned by the same kind-hearted people, and only 30 minutes apart). I can’t think of a better place to start a Costa Rican vacation – the owners very quickly and unobtrusively welcomed us and helped us easily acclimate to the area.

We arrived at Liberia Airport at 11:30 and drove to Rancho el Rio in about 4 hours. The travel time from the airport to Rancho is really just about 2 hours, but we stopped for groceries and a fresh lunch at Corobici along HWY 1- food was great and the restaurant sits right on the Corobici river with fantastic patio and view. The drive was not bad on HWY 1– we just had to travel reasonably slow, as the highway is only two lanes, and there are many pedestrians and cyclists (yay, for cycling!). We did not hit any traffic, but if there had been a car accident, I can see that we could have run into problems with time – so, just be prepared and give yourself adequate time to travel before sunset- driving at night is not recommended.

The road to Rancho el Rio was very rugged, but beautiful - definitely need 4WD. There were very few cars on this road, so we did not feel rushed, and were able to enjoy the scenery. When we arrived at Rancho el Rio around sunset (3:30 or 4:00, I believe was the time), we were warmly greeted by one of the owners, Veronica. In the kitchen we found organic coffee and a delicious snack of a toasted homemade tortilla with cheese, and caramelized square bananas – so delicious! Since it was dark outside when we arrived, we decided to just relax on the patio with wine and do a little internet research on our computer.

The next day, the owners' 9yr old son, Stuart, took us on a bird watching tour – he was prepared with a bird book, binoculars, and camera in tow. He cleverly figured out that he could use the red-eye reduction flash like a laser pointer to show us birds that our untrained eyes could not see way up high the rainforest trees. We were extremely impressed by his knowledge and love for nature. Very cool kid! Veronica and Alex then took us on a tour of their organic farm and ranch (certainly much more charming than the ranches I see in Texas!). As we were looking around, they encouraged us to forage organic mangoes and star fruit for a morning smoothie (as Veronica had already provided a blender, fresh cow’s milk, and frozen bananas for us in the rental house).

Rancho el Rio was even more beautiful and charming than pictures. The house is right on the river, with a fantastic patio. We had everything we needed to have a seamless stay: wifi, all cooking equipment/spices, hot shower, maps, and more. The house is also handicap accessible. The kitchen, house, and linens were all super clean.

There is so much natural exploring to do around the rancho, and we regret not scheduling more time at there. Next time we plan to spend to stay at least 3 days, as we will no doubt be back to visit and experience more. We left rancho el rio and casa cielo feeling relaxed and inspired.

All in all, I believe that if you want to have a truly "pure" experience in CR, Rancho el Rio and Casa Cielo are the places to stay The owners make you feel like a friend or family.

Absolutely exquisite. A rustic Costa Rican home in the old style with modern conveniences, kitchen, bath, on a river. The river sounds and fauna wash over making the sleep deeply replenishing. The family is amazing transforming this historic property back to a sustainable living demonstration.

“Absolutely Wonderful!”

We so very much enjoyed staying on this wonderful farm. Veronica and her family were exceptionally welcoming, even giving us a nature tour of the place when we first arrived.
The river was a refreshing delight to swim in. There were farm animals, friendly playful dogs and birds, monkeys etc. The house was comfortable for our family of 4 adults and one child.
We enjoyed cooking in the screened in outdoor kitchen and making a fire on the grill.
We drove up to the Monte Verde area during the day, a 40 minute drive. However, if we had decided to, there is enough to do and see on the farm, that you could entertain yourself there for days.
It's just a lovely place to spend time reconnecting with nature and family. I also very much enjoyed my chats with Veronica and her family, they are truly exceptional people.

“Totally peaceful and off the beaten path!”

Wow, wow, wow! I have to admit that I wondered what I was getting us into when we were traveling on some of the roads that lead to Rancho-el-Rio but we were all impressed with our stay. The house is fantastic and sits just up the hill from the river. Amazing background noise to fall asleep to. The "outdoor" kitchen contained everything I needed to cook for my family of 6 and the outdoor patio was fantastic. One afternoon Stuart took us on a nature walk and to some more private pools that were a short hike away with a rope swing. Another day, we went with the family to a secluded waterfall for Stuart's birthday. What a treat! We could jump off the rocks into the pool at the base of the waterfall and swim behind the waterfall. This was the highlight of my trip to Costa Rica! Alex, Veronica and their son Stuart are fantastic hosts. They greeted us with juice and homemade tamales and were really interesting to talk to. We enjoyed the animals while we were there. Three of the chickens had new baby chicks while we were there. Even our 20 year old son wants to go back to Ranch-el-rio someday with friends!
