We stayed at Los Mangos for 1 night. We were in a bungalow while my sister-in-law and her friend stayed in the motel-like building. While the room in the bungalow was somewhat attractive (it did have screens on the windows!), the bathroom was falling apart. The lid to the toilet tank sat precariously on the tank and where two of the shower walls should have come together in one corner, they didn't, so there was a large gap showing rotting wood behind. On the plus side, the bed was fairly comfortable and we were cool enough with the fan going. There used to be a restaurant on the premises, but it's no longer operating. So there was no place close-by to get ice for drinks, although a 10 minute walk into town would have done the trick if we'd been up for it. We found the young women who were at the front desk (if you could call it that) to be unfriendly and not particularly helpful. My sister-in-law wanted to pay for her room in cash, but they had no change to give her - and it was only the equivalent of a few dollars.

That said, the grounds were very attractive and the pool was quite beautiful. There is a wonderful restaurant nearby (also mentioned in another review) where we had the best meal of our trip - the Playa des Artistes.

I would definitely not return to this hotel.

A friend and I just returned from Costa Rica. We stayed 5 nights at Hotel Los Mangos and had really "settled in" when it was time to leave. The grounds and pool are beautiful. The bungalows are fairly basic but are spaced far enough apart to allow for privacy. Each bungalow has a deck/veranda with 2 rocking chairs and a hammock and that was oh so perfect. The baths need a little TLC and a basic continental breakfast would be a plus for the price but the staff is nice and we truly enjoyed our home away from home. I would definitely return.

My wife and I just returned from Costa Rica last night and spent 2 nights at Los Mangos. I have to agree with the reviewer below, the regular rooms in the multi-unit building leave something to be desired. Both and my wife were bitten by mosquitoes overnight, but we used mosquito repellant, so it wasn't so bad. The room was even less than we had expected, although tidy, everything had a worn out feel. The shades didn't completely cover the window, the ventilation was poor, especially without air conditioning. From what other people have written, the bungalows seem to be a better overall choice.

On the positive side, the grounds were nicely kept, the people were nice, there was a good sized parking lot (enough for about 8 SUV's) and the pool looked especially inviting. There were even monkeys in the trees above us which added a nice touch. The place was far enough from the center of town to be away from the noise, but just across the street from the beach. There was a great restaurant right across the street too (playa des artistes) with great seafood dishes - the menus are all hand written because the menu changes by 80% daily depending on what the chef has available fresh that day.

Stayed here for 2 nights in beginning of January. I think if you stay in a bungalow it's probably a wonderful experience, but none of us would stay in one of the regular rooms again. The rooms are in a two-story long building near the road on the property. Our room was a 4 person room. It was small and barren. Two twin beds and one full/queen. Linoleum floor. There was no air conditioning and no real possibility of cross ventilation. There was one stand-up fan that helped somewhat, but it was the most uncomfortable room of our trip. Though mosquitoes were abundant we made the call to keep the door to the room ajar so the fan could suck in some less hot air in the evenings. Not ideal. We had to put our mosquito net over the beds to protect us. The room did have a tiny little fridge that worked well (had to plug it in when we got there). The bathroom was pretty bleh, nothing nice. The shower didn't stay hot long and we had our first experience with a switch to "turn on" the hot water. The good bit was that it was pretty inexpensive. Also, the grounds were gorgeous and the little bungalows looked wonderful. They were spaced out from one another and had little hammocks on the porches. Problem was the bungalows only fit 3 people and we were 4. The pool was really nice and had some character. We swam at night. There were lights in the pool and no one else was around. Very nice. The grounds are well kept and mostly trimmed grass. My advice--stay here if you get a bungalow, skip it otherwise. The hotel is about a 10 minute, nice walk to the town on a dirt road. I'm pretty happy we didn't stay right in the town since it seemed rather cramped. I had been to the town about 10 years before and it had changed a lot. It now appears pretty full of disgruntled young Americans who are looking for a place to be other than the 9-5 industrial grind of the US. Many seemed parked in Montezuma. The strange part was, though this is only from impression and appearance, it seemed many of them weren't contributing a tremendous amount to benefit and improve the place itself but were merely camped and sucking up the tropical atmosphere. Just made Montezuma seem a little depressing to me and detracted from enjoyed the place. The traffic has gotten intense for such a small town. Lots of people selling wares on the dirt streets--the sort of things you might have seen sold around Dead shows with a tropics flare--most of the vendors seemed to be trying to make money to keep themselves down there. The waterfalls are also just a small hike from the hotel. Even closer than town i think. That was really fun. We hiked up to the upper falls. The path was a bit sketchy but worth it. There was a rope swing and the water was warm and nice.

stayed 7 nights and felt really let down. Every night we were woken by ants crawling on us in the night. children woke up to 30-40 mosquito bites each morning. no hot water. Interestingly the hotel makes you pay up front as I suspect they have a lot of people leaving after a shorter trip than you planned - of course no refund is available. Try le jardin d'mour further down the road.

In its favor the grounds are nice - its a 10 minute walk away from the drunks of montezuma, and the pool has a great view

love this place. amazing views. cozy cabins. great location. Yoga with Dogma on the deck overlooking the ocean changed my life. Mango trees all over the property and little monkeys swinging right over the cabins. I've never seen so many monkeys in one place. The people are sweet. This was a true experience. One word of warning. If you go during the rainy season---prepare youself for the occasional bug/spider in your room. There is nothing you can do about it...when it rains---they find their way into the crevaces of your cabin to shelter themself from the downpours. This is not a reasont o not stay here---it is like this every where in Costa. This little place is a slice of paradise.

We stayed at the Los Mangos for 8 nights at the end of January. Everything was as advertised. The bunalows were very clean and well constructed. The hot water only lasts for a few minutes but long enough. We used the pool area much more than anticipated. The howler monkeys move though the area and were a joy to watch. We didnt get to participate in any yoga classes but wish we would have. In any case we would recommend Los Mangos to any who have a bit of an adventurous spirit. The Montezuma area has a lot to offer, just dont expect a Disney Land level of improvements.
