“Montezuma - The Real Costa Rica”
Reviewed 17 February 2012

Well . . we made it from the north to the southern most tip of the Nicoya penninsula. We are now staying in the mythical 'hippie' village of Montezuma Beach. I doubt this place has changed much since the 60s. The people and their way of life is like a step back in time to the kinder gentler times of our youth. Just amazing!

We will only be here for three days but are making the most of it. Today we strolled the beach to discover the local monkeys and finsihed in a beachside bar with cold beer over a game of Dominoes.

Tonight it is dinner and a movie in the restaurant below our room. I think we finally found the real Costa Rica.

The staff of the El Sano Banano are the best you could hope for. The accommodation is basic but it is the cleanest we have found in Costa Rica yet (5 weeks in country so far). By the way - the food here is really good and the prices are very reasonable.

For seasoned treavellers who yearhave themn for a great travel memory - put this stop on your agenda. You can fly in to Tambor and have them meet you at the airport or you can drive to PuntArenas and take the ferry over to the penninsula or you can catch an open fast boat from Jaco.

This is the first place in Costa Rica that has my wife and I thinking a return trip may be worth think about.

Unfortunately for me, I have claustrophobia. When making the reservations to stay here, we used the reviews from Trip Advisor and they sounded pretty good. We asked if the rooms had windows and were told that we could get one with a window. The problem for me is the window didn't open.

The rooms are small and dark, but in a great location above the health food restaurant and in the center of the action. The rooms come off of a long hallway and then down a narrow staircase. I just couldn't stay there. The staff was so kind and generous and understanding about my situation. The Manager not only gave us our full cash refund, but also escorted us to another hotel to see if that would work better.

Over the next few days we visited with Emma and in all of our interactions, her kindness remained. If you are looking for a good value and don't mind windows that don't open, this would be a good option. the restaurant is wonderful and has ocean views!

Sano Banano Hotel is a good option at a reasonable price. You can use the pool at Ylang Ylang as they are connected by ownership so it's a great deal.

The food is amazing here. Try the Tropical Chicken which I had or the chicken on skewers.....forget the name.

Room Tip: It can be a bit noisy if you have a room at the front. We had #8 and had quite a bit of street noise...

Being in the center of town and only a block from the beach are two reasons to stay here. The rooms are very clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. They can book tours for you and are a wealth of information. The Internet Cafe is conveniently in the same building.

The El Sano Banano is right in the middle of Montezuma. They are a block from the beach, and surrounded by all of the bars and restaurants in town. The rooms were air conditioned, generous in size and clean. Most rooms have more than one bed, so it's great for families and groups. Breakfast is included with your room rate, and you can eat indoors or outside with a partial view of the beach and ocean. The restaurant at the hotel has fabulous daily specials and a great menu, with a focus on healthy and fresh foods. The service in the hotel and restaurant was fantastic. El Sano Banano is a great budget-friendly place with the service of a high-end boutique hotel.

We spent 4 nights here & it was a great experience. The rooms were spartan but very clean, the staff were friendly and helpful, the location can't be beat and the best was the access to the sister hotel, Ylang Ylang beach resort. The breakfasts were very good and the only complaint I had was our shower water was not very hot. I think there may have been a way to raise the temps but it was not clear if that was the purpose of the little red switch (which didn't move when tugged hard) and I didn't want to break anything. It was warm enough that hot water was not a necessity so it didn't detract from the enjoyment of the hotel or our vacation.

I highly recommend this place!

Our Spartan room (without a window) was overpriced, but use this place as a passport to the quite excellent Ylang Ylang resort up the coast (lovely pool, great beach, top notch food and cocktails). That said, staff at El Sano were really friendly and super helpful. Plus the breakfasts are jolly good. Just don't expect too much from the hotel itself.
