“Truly an Amazing Place to Stay...Never Wanted to Leave!”
Reviewed 19 July 2011

I stayed for two nights at the Lookout Inn in the brand new Blue Butterfly room (we were the first guests) and it was heaven. Polly the Scarlet Macaw came flying through the room (the room is not enclosed but open with half walls) to greet us and that was really exciting (but a bit frightening at first). Terry, the owner, is hilarious but such a gracious host!

The room was truly a highlight as it was so wide open and even had a hammock for us to lie in. It rained the last night we were there and the sound of rain on the thatched roof was so relaxing.

The beach is just down a few steps and across the little road. We took a long walk down the beach and went inland just a bit to look for crocodiles (none to be found) but it was a nice walk anyway.

Room Tip: Pick a cabina over a guest room. If not available, still know that your stay will be amazing!

It was a hell of a 10hr drive for us to get there after i slightly mis-calculated the time it takes to travel round costa rica, in fact the last 2 hours to get to the Lookout is more dirt tracks and rivers than road but that makes the lookout a special place to get to and it certainly lives up to the billing on here.

We stayed for 3 nights in the Spa which was open to the element on all sides except for the roof and is just a fabulous place to view macaws, the ocean, the jungle and many other delights oh and the bed is not grounded but tied by ropes to the ceiling :-)

Terry who's a cheeky chappie and Katia were fantastic hosts and the food was sublime (thanks to Jeff as well there....woa what a breakfeast)

The hikes to the waterfall are great fun, the beaches were deserted and beautiful, also check out the frog garden at night!

Its isolated but thats fine as you wont need anything and theres plenty to do and see all day and night!!

The place is situated in the heart of wilderness. Scarlet macaws fly overhead all of the time! Monkeys in the palm trees, even.

All of the cabins here are like Robinson Crusoe. We stayed in one of the tiki huts which is an A-frame on a platform in the jungle hillside. The side facing the ocean is open and you can listen to the wildlife and the waves down below. Super romantic place for a couple. Normally the bathroom is is a few feet down a wooden walkway and shared with the other tiki hut but because it was off season and we just happened to be the only guests and so we basically owned the place ran around wherever and however we wanted to!

I loved the food and the hosts. Terry and Katia are entertaining and can advise you where to go in the jungle that's all around the cabins. You can and should go hike in Corcovado park as well. They have a cute dog, Margarita, who will help you find crabs on the beach.

Room Tip: the tikit huts have amazing views

The Lookout Inn is at the end of the road but it is like another world. Terry and Katya are wonderful hosts - they went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The staff is great and the food delicious. The grounds are amazing with flowers everywhere and the scarlet macaws overhead. They are gorgeous and so are all the other birds. And Pauley is the macaw that lives at the inn and welcomes the guests! You can do a lot or just sit and admire the views. There is also a frog pond with lots of tree frogs. The black sand beach is righht across the road. It is definitely worth the drive to get there.

We can't say enough good things about the Lookout Inn. Terry and Katya were amazing hosts. The food was delicious, the staff was friendly, and the location is spectacular. It was the kind of vacation most people only dream of experiencing. There was so much beauty around us that it was almost overwhelming -- Scarlet Macaws dodging the trees while flying full-speed in perfect fighter-jet formation; Iguanas sunning themselves high up in the trees; monkeys stealing bananas off the deck railing two feet in front of us; butterflies the size of dessert plates; more spectacular birds and flowers than you could ever count. We slept in the Tiki hut, which was open-air. It was such a treat to fall asleep to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach, and waking up to the squawks of the birds in the jungle. The ocean breeze kept the temperature cool (well cool is relative -- but we never felt too hot) and the mosquitoes away. Happy Hour while watching the sunset at 5:00 every evening was a highlight. We could have stayed at a hotel with thousands of people and met nobody -- but instead we made all kinds of great friendships among the 20 or so guests staying at the inn. Polly (or Paul E.) the wild Scarlet Macaw that has taken up residence at the inn was always entertaining. You have to experience the antics of this bird to believe them. We enjoyed swimming in the ocean (the beach is a little rocky so bring closed-toe water shoes), hiking, taking pictures, swinging in the hammocks, and taking in the serenity of this remote hideaway. (the only reason I rated sleep quality a bit lower than 5 stars was because the ocean was kind of loud and I got a bit chilly at night believe it or not -- once I asked for a blanket I slept much better!)

Room Tip: We loved the Tiki Hut!

My family (7 and 9 year old kids and wife) spent 4 days at Lookout Inn and the place more than lived up to our expectations. The staff was remarkably friendly helping my kids navigate the mighty Pacific and always had smiles on their faces. Terry and Katya literally treat the situation as you are a guest in their house -- they eat all meals with you and hang out during the day. The location is unbeatable -- one day I went for a run down to the park entrance and passed only one person and was escorted by scarlet macaws, monkeys and a few dogs. We stayed in the tiki huts which were awesome! We had a macaw come in to our room. My children say this was their favorite place in Costa Rica, it was mine, too. Terry runs a tight ship without making anyone feel like they are in a hotel....you are a guest in their house instead. Swimming in the ocean, walking the grounds and beach, eating and talking with the crew and drinking during sunsets were just some of the highlights of the place. We will return. A very peaceful place with great people.
