Another trip to the Osa Peninsula AND the Lookout Inn in Carate! I am so blessed to be able to leave the cold winter behind and to return to the Lookout Inn! Fresh Tuna THIS year, delicious! Our open front cabina was delightful! Staff was marvelous in attending to our needs, especially the new guy assisting with the kitchen, meals and bartending! Thank you Terry and Katya! See you in 2015!

My wife and I visited here for her birthday in October so this is long overdue but I will say that it was truly one of the best experiences of our lives. We have traveled many places in the world and the Lookout Inn was definitely one of the most unique places we've been. Terry and Katya were super hospitable and really made us feel like more like old friends than customers. We had nightly dinners filled with lots of spirits and laughter and on my wife's birthday Terry went out of his way to make sure she had a cake and all the fixings that go with a 40th birthday! The wildlife that you will see from your room is also truly stunning! We took daily hikes in the rain forrest and it was incredible but you can actually see quite a bit of wildlife right from the lobby area of the inn. One of the coolest things was going on night tours hunting for frogs with Katya
as a guide. She has a real knack for finding all of the frogs you'd want to see.

If you are looking for a unique experience that is not on the beaten path then this is the place for you and my wife and I will definitely make this a stop each time we go to Costa Rica. Thanks Terry and Co!

Room Tip: we had the tropical honeymoon suite and it was beautiful!

This place is NOT for everyone.......and that is exactly why it is PERFECT!

We booked our 2 weeks stay almost 2 years in advance so that we could get the Monkey House for the full 2 weeks we wanted for the last of December. It was well worth the wait!! Our view was spectacular and having basically no walls allowed us to see an anteater 5 feet away while we were standing in our shower. Also saw a tayra and coati that close outside our room.

As all the other reviews say, the amount and diversity of wildlife is amazing. But don't expect to see it all in one or two days. Throughout our 2 weeks we saw something new almost everyday. Going on 2 bird walks with Javier was fantastic.....he really knows his birds and was great at spotting them! Our hikes with Al on the Tapir trail and twice at Corcovado NP were wonderful. He, too, had an eagle eye to spot all the wildlife mentioned by others. On the Tapir trail we saw a 'helicopter damselfly' that is unlike anything I have ever seen before. The 4 long wings with dark blue tips seemed to go round like a helicopter and when it landed, it folded the 4 wings one on top of the other. Google it to find a video....truly unique!

Terry and Katya are great hosts. Terry has tons of stories!! Juan is a great cook and I worried I would go home 10 pounds heavier. Luckily the hiking burned it off. The smiles and efficiency of Lajia, Javier and, Alex made all the meal times fun and pleasurable. The housekeepers and gardener keep the place beautiful.

Now I will get back to why I made the statement of "This place is not for everyone".

--If you don't want to climb stairs, don't come. There are 80-90 steps from the beach up to the main buildings which have 3 levels, one of which is reached by a spiral stairway. There were another 45 steps up to the Monkey House from the main level. And of course, the Stairway to Heaven with about 375 steps to the top of the ridge above.

--If you want parties and loud music, don't come. This was peaceful nature at its best. We were in bed by 8pm every night and up by 5am to get out to see the animals beginning their days.

--If you want the Hilton, don't come. Lookout Inn is just what it advertises it is. Open rooms which allows you to be right next to the jungle plants and the wildlife. In fact, one evening while at dinner a monkey stole my cell phone off the table in the Monkey House. When I reported it missing in the morning, the staff was wonderful and actually found it in the gardens below the Monkey House and helped to dry it out. Amazingly, it still works!! Moral here....put anything you don't want carried off in a backpack or suitcase when you are not in the room.

--If you don't want to hike at least minimally, this probably not the place for you. You can see tons of stuff just sitting in the rocking chairs or on your deck, which we did a lot of. But to really experience all the Osa Peninsula has to offer, some hiking is needed.

Bottom line, for us it was just what we were hoping for and then some!!! We could not have been more pleased with our choice and would highly recommend to those who want beauty, fresh air, peace and quiet, away from the crowds, animals and birds of every variety up close and personal, few children, good exercise yet plenty of time for relaxation (i.e. afternoon siestas!), sharing of the days sightings with other like-minded travelers and a well managed Inn by the hosts and staff. IT WAS PERFECT!

It was a most memorable and wonderful vacation!! It was worth the wait!

My husband and I stayed at this quirky resort last summer.
I was disappointed with the room and had had higher expectations of the food which I rate as being average. Having said that it was wonderful being so close to the Pacific. We also got to see so much wildlife that the surrounding area was teeming with. From the scarlet macaw that flew in to the humming birds and monkeys - it was a visual treat. Unfortunately we had no exciting sightings during our trek in Corcovado National Park.
I enjoyed places like Monteverde and Tortuguero much more and would likely skip Corcovado if I had to do it over again.

some times ya just can't please every one ya know??? so sorry your taste buds where off and the wild life was not hanging around for u2 -- some times _ _ _ _ HAPPENS

National Geographic has called it "the most biologically intense place on Earth in terms of biodiversity". Not only is the park very popular with tropical ecologists, a visitor can expect to see an abundance of wildlife. ( i googled this )

with this said my staff - wife and I try to do the best we can for every individual thats visits us --and again i thank God we stay busy .. the world visits us and most of all the guests love us and are happy .. thank you for visiting us here at the lookout inn ..

My husband and I spent eight days here over the Christmas holidays, enjoying the forest, scarlet macaws, white-faced monkeys and the very large tapir who came to visit one night during dinner. He only ate bananas but everyone was thrilled to see this giant who usually hides in the forest wondering up to the lodge. Terry, the owner, is now feeding him by hand. It's a hoot. The lodge is on a hill above the road, just across the street from the Pacific Ocean, an unspoiled beach with few visitors. There is no cell phone service and Internet is sporadic, but we weren't trying to stay connected. We enjoyed watching the birds that visit every day as well as long walks along the road and above the property. The food was also excellent and plentiful.

Room Tip: The rooms are all very different. Most are open air with great views.

When we planned our trip, this place was the first place that we booked. We didn't want to read the reviews too much because we wanted to keep some surprise, it was almost all based on the pictures. So when we actually did get there we were delighted to find the wildlife and the nature that we saw just like on the pictures. Like i said i haven't read much reviews on here but i guess pretty much has been covered already: you get to see all sorts of animals, there's the beach and the ocean, and the jungle. The place is so gorgeous and rich in life, fitting almost perfectly with the description of paradise, my idea at least.

So what else can be added? We picked the monkey house. It's high up and got to understand its name from a group of monkeys that happens to pass every morning right in front. There is no window, almost no wall, just enough to give privacy from neighbouring guests but it's mostly all open on all sides and that gives you the feeling to be comfortably installed right in the middle of the jungle, with lots of view to enjoy. We didn't mind no electricity and little access to internet/network. I personally found that it added to the experience since that gave more room to what is going on around; otherwise, it would have been difficult to refrain from checking emails and sending raving messages about our holidays. It's truly a place to relax, to disconnect and, i would say reconnect, to something we've lost the moment we were born in a city. Perhaps this can be said to many other places in Costa Rica but from our experience there was no other place that gave us to live together along with so many animals and so much to do in such a little radius. I mean as in walking, and beach activities. It's simple, there is here no shop or commodities that you may otherwise find in a village. This is as almost remote as it can get, a corner of heaven at the end of the road.

Something must be said about the host, Terry, and his team of workers. Terry is very dedicated, his attention produces a strong imprint on the place. Here it is: this is a perfect example of someone who was crazy enough to follow his dream and start building. The same energy is still there today. Together with his team they really worked hard to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. I was especially grateful for their help concerning some worry that we had with our rental car. Also with the meals we always got a non-meat option available (read vegetarian if you prefer), and i know that they try to cater for any special requirement. On the chapter of the food there is something perhaps worth mentioning. Meals happen in a communal way, so at the end of the day people sat together around the long table and shared what they'd seen during the day. We usually don't mix in very well in groups but this time there was no problem because we met some nice people. The place must attract like-minded people i suppose.

Recommendations? - taking the time. Take for instance the "Stairway to heaven" and follow the trail. Not too fast and mark pauses, this is not about completing one more trail. It's amazing what happens around in the jungle when you stop making noise. Be sure to do also the excursion on the lagoon very early in the morning. It's best to be there when everything is waking up.
