“Wonderful camp lodge in Osa pennisula”
Reviewed 2 February 2012

Getting there is a bit of an adventure and requires small plan out of San Jose to Puerto Jimenez, bumpy taxi ride through lovely farmland to Carate and 45 minute walk on the beach to the ecolodge. Your luggage is brought by horse and cart. We were a bit worried about how this would go but it worked fabulously. Lodge was gorgeous! Lodge grounds are beautiful. Fantastic open air bar- restaurant- meeting -greeting area decorated with wood carvings of local artist. Platform tents comfortable clean lovely. Food by Chef Paul abundant and delicious. Drinks served by Carlos at the bar wonderful. Guided trips into Corcovado terrific. Guides Luis (new kid on the block) and Bolivar (experienced wise one) were fabulous. Saw so many plants and animals and by asking learned much of local culture. Never saw a puma but followed fresh tracks. Did see many monkeys:spiders, white faced, and squirrel, tons of Coati, anteater deer, and so many wonderful birds. Gorgeous sunrises in one direction and beautiful sunsets in the other. Incredibly warm and accomodating people at LaLeona- wanted to get a job washing dishes there so I could stay forever. When we left we felt like we had known the folks at the lodge forever. Can not wait to go back!

Room Tip: We had the beach front tents with private bath and thought they were best. Monkey camp tents are a...

The bus (truck) picked us up at the collectivo. The ride to carate was bumpy to say the least, but the 45 minute walk along the beach was the walk into heaven, this place is one of the most remote places I've ever stayed. The staff was great, courteous, friendly. Accomadations rocked! There's not much to do here, (no internet-awesome) walk along the beach. Talk a guided 4:30 am hike-relax, read...siesta in the afternoon in one of their hammocks.Sunsets amazing, surf pounding. If you looking to be entertained-this is not the place. It's eco-friendly. I am allergic to gluten and they accommodated me well. Birds everywhere, flowers everywhere and they are working on creating a natural outdoor butterfly habitat. I might go back and volunteer during turtle season...

Room Tip: If the pounding surf keeps you awake, get a tent up in the hill, if you dig the wave action, front r...

The location is INCREDIBLE, hard to get there but worth it!
The tents are perfect, well designed, the ocean almost at our feet...
The meals are really good but not worth the cost. We shared lunch my husband and I otherwise it was 20$ per person for only one service, no dessert. It was plenty enough for regular appetite. Supper is included in the price, one service plus the dessert.
Would go back there ANYTIME, Corcovado is just beside, easy to go without a guide, well marked trails that follows the coast, in the forest.
Sorry for my english, it is not my main language.
Really romantic place :-)

This place is special. I don't know what it is exactly, the amazing staff, the pristine beaches, the proximity to Corcovado or course, but there is also something otherworldly about it. Intensely peaceful. All three of us on this trip agreed that we would go back in a heartbeat. This is not a place for those that want a resort atmosphere, but as an outdoors person seeking to get away from it all, this was definitely my kind of rustic luxury.

Room Tip: We paid a little extra and stayed on the beach which I think was worth it for the gorgeous breezes...

Before you travel down to the Osa Peninsula, know that it is hot. Miserably hot. All the time. And humid. There's no A/C and no fans here. You may not feel like moving. Your clothes will be slightly damp while you're here. Ok, still want to go? Read on!
This is a one of a kind place to stay. It's not budget pricing by any stretch, you stay in tents with velcro doors, the shower/toilet/sink is outside, some of them are up a BIG HILL. We loved it all, but it's not for everyone.
The food was very good, and we never went hungry despite logging 4-5 hours hiking each day. There are hammocks hanging out front and you'll want to nap in them. The bar is fantastic, open air with a view of the ocean. The staff were really fantastic, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.
Corcovado National Park is right next door, if you enjoy hiking and wildlife you'll be happy as a clam. Bring a camera!! We saw so many amazing birds including colorful scarlet macaws. We saw anteaters, monkeys, lizards, poison dart frogs, colorful "Halloween" crabs, a snake, exotic birds galore and tracks of a turtle who had laid her eggs and returned to the ocean.
The ocean isn't suited to swimming so don't come expecting a beach vacation.
You can walk a long couple of miles up the beach into the "town" of Carate. There's a little cantina where you can buy soda and beer and snacks. Other than that, this place is isolated and basic.

Room Tip: Choose up the hill for quieter rooms, but be prepared for a BIG LONG SWEATY CLIMB

My husband and me are from Costa Rica and we´ve known a lot of places in my country, but we do say that it is one of the most beautiful places to go. People who works there is very nice. They made our vacation a excellent experience. Food was delicious, rooms have the most beautiful view that I´ve ever saw in any kind of this places.

We LOVED this place.
Location: Cant be beat....It is in one of the remotest places I have ever visited. Even getting there is an adventure.
Service: Excellent. Joe, the manager was very friendly, always with a smile and solution. We are vegetarians and the staff remembered this all 4 days we were there. Meals were simple but nutritious and filling.

We went hkining to Sirena from here and this is the closest you can get lodging without actually being in the park. Our guide was arranged by La Leona (Eric). He was knowledgable (like only locals can be)...went out of the way to find animals for us to spot. After getting to sirena we didnt want to hike back to the lodge and he arranged a flight for us for decent cost.
