“Maybe the Best Vacation Ever.”
Reviewed 25 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

We travelled with a group of friends again this trip and we all were very happy with the accommodations. It was nice to have the owners on site when we arrived. Karen and Rupi were very nice and gave a little run down on the area. The rooms were spacious for 2 guests staying in them and were clean. The cabinas near the pool are just a little larger than the house rooms. The electric showers were something to get use to but we're just fine. Didn't need a lot of hot water since the weather was very hot with the start of summer.

Our group can not say enough great things about the caretakers on site. Bernie and Ronald were the best. We paid to have them cook meals for us and Ronald helped us out at the market. Bernie is a great cook with authentic food and the fresh fruit every morning is just a delight. Ronald also gave us a contact to do some excursions which were very good. We will be back in the area next Feb 2017 on a cruise and plan on visiting these two wonderful people. It was nice to walk to the rear of the property to the beach and search for shells once the tide went out.

The local bus runs right by the house and it will take you downtown for shopping in the market for food or souvenirs. A grocery store is also very close by taxi for many food needs.

The house and cabinas are very comfortable and private. The house is secured at night but an individual can not enter the kitchen in the morning unless someone staying in the 2 rooms near the kitchen open the door or the caretaker does so. The guests in the rooms at the front of the house an person must exit their room and the building and walk around the rear of the building to enter the kitchen. We had a locksmith vacationing with us and stated the cost to create keys that open an individual room plus the kitchen door would be minimal. Overall this was never a huge issue for Ronald generally had coffee started around 6am on the patio. Some of us still got up early to enjoy the non hot times.

The pool got a severe workout with most of us in pool at one time. The fountain was a nice feature from the norm. The fresh blue paint around the pool edge did come off on my hand during the mid day heat. There was some fresh paint close to the pool and cabinas area that didn't take very well and when it become wet was very slippery with one of our companions slipping and falling hard. The caretaker scrubbed the entire freshly painted area and removing the fresh paint as not to have a reoccurrence.

Overall, our group said this was a wonderful place to stay and made our first and not last trip to Costa Rica most enjoyable.

You will not go wrong with the choice. It is true costa rica and not a hotel with all the ammenties that that brings. So if that is what you are expecting, you may not be happy. We had 14 ppl aged 1 to 14 and we had lots of room. We all lived in the pool and it is large enough for everyone and can even play water polo etc. It is about 5 feet deep everywhere which we enjoyed. We left our air-mattresses to relax in the pool!
I never used my electronics but some did and the internet around the pool area worked well.
Roni and Bernie make the experience awesome. They cooked for us one day and helped with shopping. Roni took us to the fish market and carried the fish back for us on the bus and Bernie cooked for us. The bus is only 400 colones each way so about a dollar . You can go into puntarenas which is about 15 min by bus and there are lots of 'flee market' type items for sale like hats etc at a decent price. The bus driver will tell you where to get off and which direction to walk! Go when there are no cruise ships in so there are not too many ppl. Go the other direction to El Roble for groceries or bakery etc but there are not really any souvenirs that direction. Coffee is made for you every morning which was awesome and Bernie cuts up fruit for you. Karin provided a gift basket to get us by until we could shop. Thank you Karin!!
THe grounds are well kept by Roni. The beach is a close walk through the yard (less than 3 minutes) but was difficult for the elderly due to the slope of the sand and it is dark/blk sand so it is very very hot. You will need water shoes or will burn your feet walking. The beach is large and can walk either way for miles. We found it safe and lots of locals playing or fishing. The water is warm as the pool and is safe. No under tows and waves are decent when the tide is coming in. we had fun in the ocean. One review said there were some bottles or Styrofoam on the beach but we did not see much and didn't bother us at all. We did NOT experience a weird smell at all. it was lovely. You may want to buy an umbrella if you want to spend day time at the beach as there is no shade and it is very hot. There are no beach chairs so you can buy them if you don't want to sit in the sand. Also bring your own beach towels and you can buy boogie boards there at the mega super. we left our there so help yourself!!
For eating out, take a cab or walk towards the double tree on the road and there is a restaurant across from the entrance which has good prices and food is good. If you cross the highway from that place, there is an open type bar restaurant (sirens I think it was called) and it was cheaper and really good food and more choices than costa rican dishes. services was great too. there is a resident dog in the parking lot that lives in the security booth and the staff feed it. It did not have a name so we called her \Lucy. she is a little afraid of ppl but very sweet. cab is only about 1000 colones one way which is about $2 US. so great if you do not want to walk. remember you do not have the right of way so be careful walking. they are courteous if you indicate you want to cross a road. There are some good soda eating places towards the hospital and are close. try them. Do not recommend going to costa del sol for dinner as written up in the book. It is far ($15 can ride one way) and is expensive and food not great. Staff are not friendly and we seemed to be an annoyance to them. The watermelon and pineapple is the best. even better than Hawaii. the coffee is good but if you like cream, you cannot buy it. have to use milk which is not a good coffee to me. but I adjusted and drank it black.
there were hardly any bugs even at Manuel Antonio park (which I do NOT recommend anyway) . iguanas and gecos are around the pool area and rooms but are fun to watch. odd spider but not bothersome. some awesome toads/frogs in the flower areas and by the AC by room 7. some birds were making nests in the palms and tons of pelicans at the beach.
As with the prev review, Rupi does need to do some basic maintenance for up coming guests. We did mention this to him the morning we left. THe door lock for room 2 does not work well and needs replacing. The shower drains in rooms 1 and 2 do not drain well so you stand in ankle deep water when you shower. The shower heaters were not an issue for us as the water is never COLD. The mattresses on the twin beds in the one room are meant for kids so an adult sleeping on it sunk a lot and did not offer any support or a great sleep. Other beds were great. Bernie will change your sheets and towels and they were great. Pillows are ok but I always bring my own so no issue.
The walkways around the pool and to the house can be very slippery so be really careful. Half of us fell at least once and one of us twice. We started betting a cervaza on who would be next!! One large issue was the floor in the upstairs room 2. the floor needs a major repair which I assume will have been done once we left as the floor boards in the room gave way and the person fell through up to his ankle. . I think the wood was rotting or something in that area. It was a bit scary.
This is a well loved and well used place so of course work needs to be done on a constant basis. Don't let that discourage you from booking as it was a great place for a great price and Roni and Bernie and the sweet dog Macha make it a great vacation. Pura Vida. They will teach you some Spanish! enjoy don't be afaid to go here if you are on a budget. it made it possible or us to go with so many people.

“Great time!”
Reviewed 26 January 2016 for a stay in January 2016

My husband and I just spent 8 days at Oceano Beach House which is near Puntarenas. It was our first trip to Costa Rica. We really liked the house which is very large and the pool was clean and refreshing. Which was good because it's quite hot during the day and sunny everyday we were there. They had these funny local style showers, which only warmed the water - it wasn't hot. But it was perfect because after lying around the pool in the sun, it felt great. Our room was one of the cabanas closest to the beach. It was very comfortsble with a king bed and a memory foam mattress. I took quite a few naps there and even in the hammocks by the coconut trees.

The staff of the house were very polite and helpful. They ran errands for us when we asked. We did a few tours to Zip Line at Adventure Park in Miramar and that was lots of fun. We also went to Arenal and we were lucky that we saw the top of the volcano and that was very beautiful. Got some good pictures of that. Also, the caretaker took us to feed some monkeys. They are cute and they jump around the trees and run along the ground fighting for attention and bananas. Cute.

The owners were great hosts. They greeted us personally even though they live an hour away from the beach house. They explained everything about the house and the area. Then they made themselves available by phone if we should need anything, but we didn't. Then our last day they came to see us off. They also gave us a nice fruit basket with coffee and milk for our first morning so we didn't have to go shopping right away. We couldn't have asked for better service. You don't get those personal touches at a hotel. This was a memorable experience. With the staff and the local neighbourhood it felt like we were locals. (Well kind of). Anyway we would come back for sure. The price was so reasonable too!

The caretakers are wonderful people. Bernie and Ronald make you feel at home and Macha the property's dog just tops it off. She is an amazing dog, and she always accompanied us to the beach. It did not matter to her if it was our whole group or a lonely runner or photographer taking early sunrise shoots, she was always right there. Miss her terribly.
Bernie cooked for us a few nights and she always cleaned the mess we made by cooking ourselves the night before. She also made morning coffee and cut fruits for us. Nothing was too much for her, always ready to please you. Ronald was very helpful as well. He went shopping with us, showed us how to use public transport. For me the best was that he took my kids (in their 20’s) to feed the monkeys few times and that was for them absolutely the best part of their vacation. Thank you, Bernie and Roni.
I met Karin and Rupi back home and they were kind enough to do some grocery shopping for our first day. They also arranged the first dinner which was very good after long day of traveling.
Karin suggested Esteban for airport pick up. We were so happy with the driver (Alvaro) and their A/C bus that after shopping around we decided to stay with them for our day tours.
Day trip highlights included zip lining @Arenal Volcano, Tortuga Island, Manuel Antonio National Park (I insisted of having Esteban’s brother Aaron as our guide after reading reviews and was not disappointed he really has the most amazing eye and knowledge base). Aaron was kind enough to stop @ Crocodile Bridge and for some shopping on the way home. Esteban also arranged drop off at the airport for different groups.
Esteban and his team are very courteous, professional and funny. On each trip we were given just the right amount of very interesting information without being bored. Excellent drivers and nice A/C cars. You can contact him at suenos01@gmail.com
The property is very nice. It has a more cottagey feeling than a house. The 14 of us were never crowded. All bedrooms have their own bathroom.
The cons:
The electrically heated shower heads are just fine for us but the three broken ones have to be fixed.
I understand how they work but both in the “cabinas” #7 & #8 and room #4 are TOTALLY broken.
Rupi told us on a first day to just use each other shower if we have a problem. Well, the problem for me was that MY family was in #4,7,8. One day I finally had to ask friends as I couldn’t take one more freezing shower. Using electrically heated showers is not a problem if they work.
There needs to be more comfortable seating areas. The one outside sofa is not enough.
Also 5 loungers for 16 people are not enough. And some cushions would be nice.
And one more suggestion please buy skimmer basket for the pool as the flower pot does not work – take it from the pool owner :)
We never ate in the dining room because it’s too hot there. The one floor fan is not enough. There should be at least one more and 2 smaller on the countertop.
Door knobs need to be exchanged in some rooms as each time you try to open the door you have to fight with it especially in room # 8 and #4.
Not to be picky but the outside area and pool deck need refreshing coat of paint.
And lastly when you come back from the beach there is a shower on the property. It would be great if it was working.
The cons are a suggestion for the owners as sometimes you see things better from the “side”.
The pros totally outweigh the cons.
The property is beautiful, the garden with hammocks was so peaceful, kitchen is well equipped and having own pool with access anytime is the best.
Overall we had a great vacation and I will definitely come back one day.

Thank you the 5 star rating and for commenting on the extra services we and our staff provided to make your stay enjoyable. I hope you liked the birthday cake I bought you. we called you during your stay and you said everything was fine. No problems. We and our guests feel it's an excellent value for $25 a day per person.
The outdoor shower by the pool works fine and all the room showers are working as they are supposed to . As explained to you before arrival; our house does not have hot water . We currently have guests in these rooms and they said the showers are fine.
We pride ourselves in providing an authentic Costa Rican cultural experience at our beach house with 2 staff to assist you with all your needs.
The patio has seating for 21 plus 3 hammocks.

“Your own piece of paradise!”
Reviewed 3 January 2016 for a stay in November 2015

My 5 friends and I rented out the entire villa for a 10 days stay in November and we were blown away by the size, cleanliness and hospitality of both the owners (Rupi and Karin) and Bernie and Ronald who live on site.
Each bedroom came with ample space and it's own bathroom and the communal areas of the lounge, kitchen and patio had everything you needed to be able to relax and entertain.
The pool was really clean and Ronald would come out every morning to sent our the deck chairs whilst Bernie made a cup of tea. Bernie and Ronald are a joy to have around as they mostly spend their time in their own house on site but are happy to help order taxis, cook meals, put up hammocks and generally make you feel at home.
The area is good for being able to access lots of attractions within Costa Rica on day trips ie. zip-lining, volcanoes , nature reserves etc. Karin and Rupi will also help with the airport pick-ups after a long flight!
I think we'll be coming back again at some point!!
