“Cheap”
Reviewed 25 January 2013

The Mono Azul is a hotel by the road in Manuel Antonio, so the sound of the road makes it noisy a little. Not the ideal place if you want something quiet.

The hotel itself was ok, but nothing exceptional. Clean... but could have been cleaner. The rooms were what we needed, comfortable. The service was good and helpful (we had help for calling and making other reservations and for making our laundry). And the price wasn't too expensive.

So overall... good, but nothing great. Wouldn't recommend it. But's ok for a few nights in Manuel Antonio.

Older hotel that has been transformed into a tropical paradise with well-maintained rooms at several levels, some with a patio. Very friendly and helpful owner. Delicious meals, attractively served. Souvenir Shop with well-priced items of all kinds that benefit Kids Saving the Rainforest.
This hotel is well-located for Manuel Antonio Park and other scenic attractions in the area. Would be happy to stay there on our next trip.

This place was dirty and in need of many repairs. The shower door handle was hanging on for dear life, the bed sheets were covered in hairs, and there were dead bugs and dirt on all the dishes. It gets points for convenience and location, and the staff were friendly.

Dear traveler, we appreciate your comments and take them seriously to heart.

We were obviously horrified to hear that your room was found lacking in cleanliness. We work very hard to make sure that all of our rooms are clean, safe, and ready for our guests. We have spoken with the maids and have begun an improved review process to make sure all of our rooms are clean.

We have also bought new high-thread-count bedsheets and will be making improvements to the bedding in each room.

This was a cozy hotel with decent sized rooms and a bath with shower in each one. It was clean and the owners were very friendly and happy to help with plans or outings. The location was close to the park and the beach. It has a few pools which were refreshing. We had some good meals-breakfast and dinner, both of which gave a traditional food choice also- and were always treated very well. The owners are American but have lived in Costa Rica for many years, raising their family there and continuing on. There is a small boutique which profits the Kids Saving the Rainforest.

Have stayed here several times, with family and friends as well as clleagues...very nice environment, terrific food, and clean, variety of accomodations ranging from simple singles to fancier suites. Going for a swim in one of the pools on the property makes for a refreshing end to a day of adventure. Owners Chip & Jennifer and their staff are always glad to help arrange excursions to local attractions - this includes arranging for guides to pick you up at the hotel and ferry you to Manual Antonio, mangrove tours, etc. Easy to get to Manuel Antonio on your own as well - there is a bus that runs between Quepos and the park that passes by the hotel every 15 mins or so (designated stop just down at the corner, costs just over 100 colones). If you're driving, they've got a pretty secure parking area where you can leave your car.
Be sure to check out the hiking trail to the fire lookout behind nearby Hotel Plinio - you can easily walk there from the Mono Azul (just across the street down about five minutes towards Quepos) and the views are worth the steep climb!

Compared to other rooms we looked at in the Quepos area from large expensive hotel chains to hostels to some sketchy B&B's edged with razor wire, The Hotel Mono Azul was a breath of fresh air. Tropical colors, lush vegetation, pretty pool, clean rooms and best of all minutes from Manuel Antonio. The non a/c rooms were very reasonably priced. The restaurant was closed in the off season, but the staff directed us to nearby food in walking distance. It's not fancy, but it does the job and does it well. And they had complimentary coffee in the morning!
