“Wonderful relaxing stay!”
Reviewed 23 May 2013

We stayed at Casa Buena Vista for only 2 nights but were VERY pleased with everything. Anita was out of town but we were well taken care of by Nuria - what a lovely lady. We practically had the place to ourselves and enjoyed having wine on the balcony of the teak room each night with beautiful and relaxing views after strenuous days of hiking and sight-seeing. When we came back to our room on the 21st (our 25th wedding anniversary) we found the lovely decorations on our bed. Maybe everyone gets that extra touch but we choose to believe that it was for our special day. We also enjoyed HOT water not only in the shower but also at the sinks - the only place on our trip that we had that luxury! We vote Casa Buena Vista as the best home away from home of our trip. Thank you Anita for your email help and suggestions when we booked, and to Nuria for all you did to make us feel welcomed.

Room Tip: Be sure to get a room with A/C!

This is a typical Spanish style house, built into the hillside, with lots of stairs and a wonderful higgledy piggledy layout. Anita is a lovely host, making all the jams and syrups for use at breakfast. There are 3 beautiful cats if you are lucky enough to meet them. We slept well though occasionally woken in the night by the nearby howler monkeys - something I will never complain about! Plenty wildlife around - including the bat colony over the stairs, iguanas and birds.

Hotels surrounding Casa Buena Vista, which really does live up to its name, are 3 or 4 times more expensive. Buses run every half hour down into Manuel Antonio and the park, and the other way into Quepos. If feeling energetic you can walk down a steep track direct to the beach, then along to the national park. Or you can walk down the road, which takes about half an hour, admiring the antics of the capuchins as you go.

We had a fridge in the room to store drinks and food, and there is a big communal kitchen where you can cook your own meals - which is welcome as there are not many restaurants in the immediate locality.

Note - this B&B is not in Quepos, it is closer to Manuel Antonio. Which is much nicer in my opinion!

Room Tip: Rooms 1 & 2 at the top offer the best views, they have fans, no aircon and also no curtains at t...

I have some mobility issues. Before I booked my reservation, Anita warned me that there would be a "few steps" to get to our cottage (which I can do). Instead there were several, all going down, and lugging a suitcase was impossible for me and difficult for my traveling companion. Upon arrival, Anita handed us 5 keys--one for securing your car, one for the main house, one if you want to visit the tv room, one for the shared kitchen area, and one for your room. What a hassle! The refrigerator was literally a "rust bucket" and the badly, undefrosted freezer dripped water constantly (which leaked onto our leftover food). The passage in which to roll our luggage to the closet area was too narrow and we had to leave our luggage in the living room the entire time. Breakfasts were only average. One morning we had scrambled eggs which did not include any kind of meat. Another morning, I had one small piece of french toast. When I asked for seconds, I was informed that 2 more guests were due to arrive and she had no more bread. We went to a cafe for breakfast immediately after that. Nearby construction was going on and we were awakened every morning at 6:30 AM. Even for an able-bodied person, it is at least a 30 minute walk to the beach (not 10 minutes). For a few dollars more, you can find a place with a pool that doesn't feel like you're breaking into a fortress. Great views but most establishments have the same, including their own monkeys!

These people were unsuitable for traveling in Costa Rica. After communicating that they should arrive before dark they arrived at 10 pm. Roseanne{s partner was sick and pooped in the bed. They brought tons of luggage and expected me (a 64 year old woman with some health problems of my own) to carry their things to their room. Which I ended up doing. They wanted special treatment everywhere, even asking the National Park for special transportation when it is only a walking/hiking park. My breakfasts are excellent as you can see with other commentaries but these people always wanted something more. We provide a very safe environment in a country where car breakins are very common. Maybe they missed seeing all the bars on the windows in CR. I guess they thought they were going to stay in a 5 star hotel for $50 a night. I would not recommend renting to them. Sad that they are so negative and couldn't find even one nice thing to say.

On my fifth trip to the Osa, I decided to make detour through Manuel Anotnio and spent two nights at Anita's. The place is charming, spacious, comfortable, and has an amazing view. Anita's recommendations for recreation and dining were excellent. She arranged for us to go zip lining and steered us to the best ribs I've ever eaten (slow cooked over cinnamon wood). There are multiple bar/restaurant options within walking distance, including a bar with a pool.

I would recommend this B&B and likely stay there again if visiting the area.

At $50 you are getting a steal of a deal to have breakfast and have an incredible view of the Manuel Antonio National Park. Incredible view! Especially room #2. The buildings are all white with curved staircases and beautiful tropical flowers all around. We felt like we were in Greece. Everything was so beautiful. There were bats that make their home on the ceiling of the staircase you walk down every time you go to your room. They were often flying by as you walked by which freaked me out. I don't do bats. Anita was very helpful with great info. THere was an incredible pool up the hill nearby (everything is steep in Manuel Antonio) to watch the sunsets from as long as you buy a drink. Also the trail down to the beach was only a house down from casa buena vista. It's also a steep gravel walk but not terrible (just very hot during the middle of the day). We were grateful for close access to the beach though. We went down at night and saw a turtle nesting and the phospholuminescence of the waves. Great place to stay!.

This was one of the best experiences of our lives. Anita showed us so many wonderful places. Paradise has a name now!!!! Definately need to go back and explore more. Usually when we travel I get to chip and paint aboard our sailboat. This time it was just pure pleasure with very good friends. I highly recommend a stay. It's hard to decide whether to lounge on the porch in a hammock or go exploring. The fresh fish was so nummy. The bands really good. Too bad working for a living has to interfere with a good time.

My wife and I stayed in Manuel Antonio (MA) with Anita for 3 nights. The highlight of our stay was the Howler monkeys that came through each morning around dawn making the eerie sound you would expect from a much larger and more dangerous critter. One morning we actually got photos of them in the early dawn light. Our room was very comfortable and clean and the somewhat aged AC just about managed to keep up with the heat and humidity. The view is amazing but it is the sunrise (which you cannot really see) as opposed to the sunset side of the ridge which is spectacular from a variety of restaurants on that side of the ridge.

Anita is an extremely pleasant host with intimate knowledge of the recent history of the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica which she has experienced. Breakfasts were great with fresh fruit and a variety of choice (love that french toast) and a number of homemade fruit syrups.

We had a car and Anita offers 3 gated garage spaces. Although 200 m or so from the main road between Quepos and MA it is quite quiet except for the aforementioned Howlers at dawn.

One caution -- only 3 of the rooms have AC and those rooms are about 40 steps down from the road level. These are stone steps with some exposed to the elements. Even in the dry season it can rain quite hard in the evening. If you have any knee, foot, ankle problems beware.

One negative -- in one of the stair wells a colony of fruit bats roost on the ceiling. The bats themselves are harmless or to some even cute. However, as all living creatures they produce solid waste -- droppings or gano if you prefer. Unfortunately, the gano is allowed to accumulate at least on one side of the step below. If you find that distasteful take note.

There is a kitchen available if you would like to cook and a TV room if you are from Atlanta and they are involved in the NFC championship game for the first time. (We are not from Atlanta or even SF).

Having bad knees and desiring AC, we probably would not stay here again, but for the less disabled, we recommend Casa Buena Vista.
