I spent 2 months on the slopes of Chirripo while volunteering at the Cloudbridge Reserve. Although most of my time was spent on the Reserve we (my 12 year old son) did walk part of the Chirripo trail.

The trail is difficult and typically requires 2 days and a permit from the rangers station in San Gerardo de Rivas. If you are unsure of your fitness level I recommend you walk from San Gerardo to Cloudbridge (about 3 km/2.4mi) which is mostly uphill and similar in terrain to the Chirripo trails (that is dirt, mud, and loose rock). If you do that comfortably then tackle Chirripo. If not then I recommend spending time at Cloudbridge where there is plenty of wildlife (spider monkeys, quetzals, trogans, coati, etc) but the trails are more accessible.

Amazing hike, beautiful place, inspiring experience. Somewhat extreme but would definitely do it again!

I absolutely loved it!

Make sure to bring the right gear (if you ask now what kind of gear you probably just got the answer if you should do it)...

Yes, it's very muddy and slippery, partially steep up to 35%, can rain at any time all year round, etc.

But there's 2 fresh water stations, and rather encouraging sign posts on the way, and it's close to impossible to get lost - a key feature.

If you're fit and struggle between yet another beach, some "adventure" like canopy or some real stuff - well, I'd recommend to go for a really inspiring and beautiful piece of nature.

Enjoy

Took 3 days but well worth the hike. Incredible to watch the sunrise ABOVE the clouds. I'll never forget it.
